Has anyone found an insurance company that will provide long term care insurance for metastatic breast cancer recurrence in other parts of the body? or any other ideas to cover long term care expenses?  Thanks!

Getting LTC insurance with ANY history of illness is hard -- I was turned down (pre-cancer) because my doctor's notes included a notation that I had a balance problem.  AND it's expensive, and only covers your care when you cannot do a certain number of Activities of Daily Living as judged by the insurer.  If you have a spouse or child who is employed by a governmental agency, you might be able to get on a group policy.  Otherwise, you could just start putting away the premiums that a LTC policy would cost you (about $1,000/month)

I just signed up for a small policy through my employer's group plan. Interestingly enough, for short term benefits (2-3 years-this is the average amount of time most live in a nursing home). I began the online questions and the health questions for the short term benefit did not involve cancer inquiries. They asked about dementia, ALS, Multiple Sclerosis and a host of other maladies that people can presumably live for with many years. I think this is the basis for their calculation of who will potentially cost them more. The lifetime benefit did ask questions about cancer. So, I signed up for the short-term plan. It was fairly cheap.

@lauri and Patriotic - I like your idea of putting away the premiums because I don't think I will find this insurance - saving up is a good idea - kind of the same thing I do for my dentist instead of buying dental insurance.  I am retired and a student in grad school and single so have no group insurance possibilities.  I will check the idea of a short-term policy with my insurance agent.  When I finish grad school, I may have benefits when I go back to work and perhaps there will be an opportunity there.  I am currently on Medicare and I can apply for Medicaid if this kind of care is needed.

Still interested in any other ideas from other members of this forum.

Thanks to all for your suggestions!

Hmmm -- don't forget that for Medicaid you have to spend down your assets to a minimal level, so anything you save would have to be used up before you can get that coverage.  But being able to pay for the first few months from your saved cash might get you into a better quality nursing home.

The only way I got LTC insurance is that I changed jobs at age 60 and the company had a 60-day window for applying for the insurance with guaranteed insurability (no medical questions.)
