Jenn...congratulations on your daughter's engagement. How exciting!
Perdido Key is beautiful. We have vacationed there several times and it's always so peaceful there.

If you need a good laugh, get ready because this one will do it for you!
POWER OUTAGE DURING A MAMMOGRAM
I actually kept my mammogram appointment. I was met with, "Hi! I'm Belinda!" This perky clipboard carrier smiled from ear to ear, tilted her head to one side and crooned, "All I need you to do is step into this room right here, strip to the waist, then slip on this gown.
Everything clear?
I'm thinking, "Belinda, try decaf. This ain't rocket science."
Belinda skipped away to prepare the chamber of horrors.
With the right side finished, Belinda flipped me (literally) to the left and said, "Hmmmm. Can you stand on your tippy toes and lean in a tad so we can get everything?'
Fine, I answered. I was freezing, bruised, and out of air, so why not use the remaining circulation in my legs and neck and finish me off?
My body was in a holding pattern that defied g gravity (with my other boob wedged between those two 4 inch pieces of square glass) when we heard, then felt a zap! Complete darkness and the power went off!
"Oh, maintenance is working. Bet they hit a snag." Belinda headed for the door.
"Excuse me! You're not leaving me in this vise alone are you?" I shouted.
Belinda kept going and said, "Oh, you fussy puppy...the door's wide open so you'll have the emergency hall lights. I'll be right back."
Before I could shout "NOOOO!" she disappeared.
And that's exactly how Bubba and Earl, maintenance men extraordinaire, found me, half-naked and part of me dangling from the Jaws of Life, and the other part smashed between glass!
After exchanging polite "Hi, how's it going" type greetings, Bubba (or possibly Earl) asked, to my utter disbelief, if I knew the power was off.
Trying to disguise my hysteria, I replied with as much calmness as possible "Uh, yes, yes I did thanks."
"You bet, take care" Bubba replied and waved good -b y e as though I'd been standing in the line at the grocery store.
Two hours later, Belinda breezes in wearing a sheepish grin. Making no attempt to suppress her amusement, she said, "Oh I am sooo sorry!" The power came back on and I totally forgot about you! And silly me, I went to lunch. Are we upset?"
And that, Your Honor, is exactly how her head ended up between the clamps....

Funny, Fox! This thread has been known to have humor once or twice in the past.
-
jo & anyone else, I was trying to direct anyone with a thankful comment for BC.org to a thread called "Thank You." The thread can be found in the Moderator Messages forum, accessed by the forum index tab up at the top, if you are not able to get to it even by cutting and pasting the link I posted above. Don't know why some links don't work. (I would be even more thankful if they did.)

This won't be of interest to all, but may be of interest to some. Back when we were talking about hot flashes for only the 100th time, a couple of prescription drugs were mentioned, one being Effexor. Now having tried it, this is my story.
Started on 37.5 mg. in the morning, time released, , and it really had a stimulant effect on me. Like I was talking twice as much. Given how much I talk to begin with, even I noticed the excess. So that was BAD.
Like a stimulant, it dulled my appetite. I lost a few lbs. of belly fat. So that was GOOD.
It gave me dry mouth. BAD I drank more water. GOOD.
Around the third day, I started to sweat excessively. Yuk, that is BAD.
The kind of sweat where beads form on your face and cleavage, then start to drip. But, it seemed to clear up about 2-3 days later on it's own. O.K., GOOD.
Got constipation, BAD. I take magnesium anyway, so one more tab. as needed corrected that. GOOD enough.
The first three days, my FM pain (neuropathy in hands and feet) became a nerve vibration feeling. Neither good nor bad, just WEIRD. Then, after I got to the therapeutic level in my bloodstream, it definitely helped with the FM pain. So, GOOD.
Effexor has a short 10-12 hour half-life, so by night when my pain is worse, the pain was breaking thru'. Back to BAD.
I had reduced my Tamox. down to one 10 mg. tab. because the hot flashes were over the top, and although I still had about 30 or more a day, they were a little bit milder. The Effexor seemed to help, to the point of me feeling only about a dozen warm flashes a day. Very GOOD!
I felt guilty not taking the two tabs (20 mg.) a day like I was supposed to. I'm BAD.
After one week, my doc said take two Effexor tabs, at which point I figured I should take the two Tamox. again also. The flashes did come back stronger, but not all the way to the pre-Effexor levels, and I am getting "only" about two dozen a day, which is still a reduction. So, I'll say GOOD.
After the first week, and even tho' I was taking more Effexor, I got sleepy in the afternoons. Not groggy, like I shouldn't opereate a motor vehicle or heavy machinery, but like I should just lay on the couch, see if Law & Order was on and nap. Kinda BAD.
Still, I had no trouble falling asleep at night, and was sleeping thru' the night with improved quality and less waking. Excellent GOOD!
The doctor told me to take both Effexor tabs. in the morning, but found that if I take one with breakfast and one with lunch, I have more coverage for the nightime FM pain, so that worked out o.k. I think that brings me to one GOOD to the plus column.
Overall, I think I can deal with the side effects well enough and it is helping with my FM pain. I have heard it is hard to wean off this drug, so that is a hurdle I'll have to face at some point. I don't know if I would recommend this JUST for relief from hot flashes. I'm not really in favor of using one drug to take away the side effects of another drug, but if the flashes from Tamox. are so bad you feel like quitting the Tamox., what are you gonna do? I don't know about the natural remedies, but as far as prescription drugs, I would check out gabapentin (Neurontin) first before Effexor, because it seems to have less side effects and less interactions. It did not work for me, but everyone is different and it has helped some women to reduce the hot flashes.
I had a real compulsion to write about all the details. Guess it still gets me a little hyper.

Dear Ladies just wanted you to know my dad passed away Monday night. Yesterday was a though day for me. I know now he is at peace and without pain now. Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. We are having a memorial for him on Aug. 6th at the First Baptist Church in Clayton New Mexico. Instead of flowers, we are asking for donations to the Luekemia Foundation or the American Cancer Society. His name was JR Newton short for John Riley.
-
MJBmiller-I am so sorry about your Dad, but he is at peace now. It is hardest on us that are left here, we have to deal with our emotions. My prayers are with you and your family. ((((((((((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))))))))))))
-
Awe MJ, condolances to you and your family. I know it was expected but it is still hard. (((((((Hugs)))))).
Love n hugs. Chrissy
-
MJBMiller - Sending my condolences to you and your family. You Dad is in a good place now and out of pain. (((((((HUGS))))))))
-
mjb, Deep sympathy for you and your family. It was nice that you could all spend some time with him in the last days and I hope you were able to get together on his last wishes and are able to carry them out.
-
MJBMiller, your Dad waited until you left so he could pass in peace. I'm so glad you had your time with him and I know he is in a better place, but it's still hard. Hugs, sweetie....
elimar, why not take the Effexor's 12 hours apart? That seems to make a lot more sense and it would cover your night issues. One am, one pm. Just an FYI, Neurotin is notorious for weight gain - as much as a pound a WEEK. Documented!
-
MJB, I am truly sorry to hear about your father. Loosing a parent is so hard. Know that you and your family are in our prayers.
Foxy -
Barbe, that IS a future experiment. I haven't been on it that long yet, and was sorting out those S/E's first, but want to try that 12 hr. interval next.
The Effexor causes weight gain in some too, but I seem to be going the other way. Only tried Neurontin for 4 weeks, but no gain for me in just that month. For me, insomnia, excessive weight gain, and excessive constipation are deal breakers.
-
MJB-- deepest sympathy to you and your family. We are all here for you. We'll mourn your loss but celebrate his life!
-
I take Effexor 75 mg @ night with minimal SE's (luckily). However, I do have weight gain, although I didn't realize it was from Effexor until a friend told me about it. I thought it was all from going into early menopause and less movement due to the collapsed vertabre........ I guess the combination of all is what has given me some extra fluff.
MJB - I am so sorry for your loss. My sympathy for you and your family (((Hugs))) Jenn.
RE: Mammogram. I have to say something similar did happen to my sister. After the nurse put my DS into the vice grips, the fire alarm went off........the nurse looked at my sister, said she needed to see what it was and ran out of the room. My DS was left there in the vices of mammogram jaws until the nurse returned a few minutes later and cheerfully told her all was okay. My DS gave that nurse/tech an earful. While it was hysterical for us, my DS still has fears of being left every year for her annual.
