dogeyed, I had chemo prior to surgery.  The tumor was about 5 to 7 cm and shrunk to about 1 cm after chemo.  Had a lumpectomy on July 8 but only had 3 out of 4 margins clean, so am going in for re-excision on Tuesday.  Hoping for clean margins then.  Wishing you well as you continue to recover from chemo.

divine - good luck next week on your surgery.  I know you were disappointed about your previous margin but I am sure this next one will do it for you!

MICHELLE,  Woikin' those drums!  Ha!  Saw them on TV some years ago, fantastic atypical bunch.

DIVINE, Maybe it's a certain combination, like if you have mets, or a large tumor, or however many cars are on the road.  The doc about died laughing when I told him on ultrasound it looked like Sputnik.  Bye bye!  GAIL

It's been so long, I finally was able to wrestle my computer away from my broken legged son to catch up on the posts b/c I was really needing you guys today!

GG, so sorry about Gandalf, I lost my dog that was 17 about 5 years ago and I love my new girl, but he was my first child! Good luck and as to your question, yes, my surgery was after chemo and rads will be next.

Sounds like rads are going well for those of you posting about it which makes me glad to hear it since I still have that to "look forward to"

So after my dbl mastectomy with lymph nodes out on the left I find out that the right lymph nodes turned oit to be positive too and go back for another surgery Aug 3 (so yes, I am right with you Divine!). I have not voiced it to anyone aloud b/c I guess I try to be the positive one (and really I usually am), but I am getting kind of scared. I don't understand why even after chemo it shows up in lymph nodes where they never found or suspected it earlier...it's always like "oops, just one more thing" I feel like it's never going to end. How do they really know if they get it all?!

Sorry to be Debbie Downer, but I feel like this is the only place where I can talk about how I feel b/c at home I have to be the strong one, with my friends and at work people go on about how strong and brave I am. I don't always want to be strong or brave but I don't want people to ever think that I am not being positive or giving up or feeling worried...i am usually a happy person and despise feeling depressed! Love u all though!!

GG: I saw them live, original crew. I already have the costume (big black ass-kickin boots and sawed-off pants). That has always been my energy level. Unfortunately Taxol has me feeling exhausted. Last run was 7/15 and I muscled through the days of pain (not as bad as previous), but this time, dang! Incredible fatigue, bad tummy (feel queasy and no appetite) and wicked runs. Sorry. TMI.

It got super hot here last week, so I hauled my sorry ass and my kid up to my mom's camp in the Adirondacks. Smart move, though I was already feeling pretty lousy. Charlotte gained the confidence to jump off the dock into water over her head! She was wearing a floaty vest, but she went under each time and popped up eager to go again. Great weekend.

So sad about Amy WInehouse. What an amazing voice.

jenn, never worry about being a downer on this site; that is what we are all here for, to help each other when the chips are down.  I am sorry to hear that you have to have another surgery, and I will keep you in my prayers.  God bless.

<<Jenn_H>>  I'm so sorry that you have to endure another surgery!  How frustrating!

I think of you often - we held each other's hands in those first few days after being diagnosed.  Praying for you!

    Hi all,

charlottesmama - that Taxol should start clearing your system and you will notice a difference at about the 5 week point - you will wake up one day and feel like a normal human.

jenn_h - sorry about the additional surgery.  That is such a bummer.  They didn't see my nodes on any pre-surg imaging or testing, it came as a surprise.  I will be thinking of you.

Had my TE replaced last Wed. and started some pretty intense pain, couldn't sit upright or walk around.  Spent the weekend laying down counting the minutes between Vicodins - not like me at all.  I ran a 101.5 fever on Sunday night so called the PS Mon. a.m.  He was in surgery all day but the staff said come to the office at about 3:30.  I had an initial assesment with the phys. therapist at 1:00 and I didn't want to miss it but I was not sure how I could handle it.  I stepped into the shower and the pain went away!  I felt like a pinching or pressing but felt like I was being stabbed with a knife - it was that intense.  When I went to the PS office they sent me down the road to the surgery center and I just figured that was where he was - but no, he was ready to take me back to surgery.  He ended up giving me a scrip for antibiotics and I am keeping my appt on Thurs with him.  Crazy! He thinks my rib might have been pressed on and inflamed. I know that feeling - it is always something...

JENN H, really sorry you have to go thru yet another surgery to get those other lymphs out.  Perhaps they simply did not show up as enlarged or whatever with the usual tests, so could be they have been like that since the beginning.  But what a pain to go back to the hospital!  I hate the idea of a return surgery so much that I'm going to at least ASK the doc to take out my port-o-cath during the mastectomy surgery.

SPECIALK, so are they going to reoperate becuz of the pain, or have they decided to let it go since it felt better after a shower?  By the way, after surgery, how long before a person can clean off the op area?  My surgery is August 2, exactly one week away, maybe they'll tell me at pre-op tomorrow.

OTHERS, legs and feet still hurt, but I feel better about it since you all explained it takes a while for neuropathy to heal up.  By the way, my dog's diarrhea finally stopped, so now it's just trying to get him to stand up and walk by himself.  Our worries are so stressful, tho.  Love to my sisters, Gail

dogeyed - so far I am holding steady.  If the pain comes back he will definitely go back in.  We are in a watchful waiting period right now. I think the pain was due to swelling/trauma to the general area that caused the pinching/pressing pain.  It was just a coincidence that it stopped when I got in the shower.  I was allowed to shower the next day after this surgery and I had a fairly long IMF incision (like an old-school implant scar) with a piece of tape over it.  I was not restricted on the showering thing with any of my surgeries - even with drains in.  I could usually shower after a couple of days.  Usually they ask you to shower prior to surgery with antibacterial soap, so I just continued to use that right after.

On the neuropathy front - my left foot now seems almost normal, right foot still has numbness on the ball of the foot and toes.  It feels weird when I walk because the feet don't feel the same.

Dogeyed, I'm also going for surgery aug 2. I'll be thinking of you. There was one unclear margin on my initial lumpectomy so my surgeon wants to go back on and dot her i's and cross her t's as she puts it. Some dcis was found in the tissue that was removed and that's where the unclear margin was. So it looks like I'm headed for round #2. Im glad your dog is getting better, I'm sure he wants to be there for you too next week :)

Special k I hope you feel better and the pain is getting better for you.

    Jennh, thinking of you.

Thinking positive thoughts to all of us fab feb girls. :)

Hey girls - know that all of you facing surgery are in my prayers.

Have any of the Feb girls had NS BMX?  My right breast experienced necrosis, the TE had to be reduced 100 ccs and we saved it.  My problem is all through chemo I wore a prosthetic on the right side and it compressed the nub.  I have been trying to pull it out, but in doing so I noticed a tiny bb sized lump.  Any body have anything similar?  I am freaking out....

Jen1832,  I'm not sure what a NS BMX is.  This sounds like something you need to address to your plastic surgeon and oncologist.  Any lump is worrisome, and there may be an explanation for it, relating to how the prosthetic lay against your skin.

JenH- you have every reason to feel depressed about the new positive lymph nodes on the right and more surgery.  We can't expect to be positive and resilient all the time.  Just some of the time:)  Did you have bilateral cancer -meaning in both breasts?  That would explain the positive nodes on both sides.  My thoughts are with you and will hope surgery goes well next week.

Jen1832, I have no experience at all with nsbmx, so i cant offer any info, but i will have you in my thoughts, hopefully your dr will help you and be able to ease your worries.

    Take care everyone

Thanks all - I called my RS today and he is seeing me in the morning.  My hope is that it is just some sort of scar tissue.  My DH is out of town and so I don't want to say anything to anyone until I know what is up.  NS BMX is nipple sparing bilateral mastectomies.  Like a lot of others, I ALMOST lost one TE and one nip early on.  I have made so much progress.  Will be 6 weeks PFC tomorrow and I sure don't want anymore setbacks.  I was just starting to become optimistic again.

JEN, hope you get good news on your situation.  That sounds so harrowing, pulling out the prosthetic and discovering a problem, but it's probably a scar tissue type thing, I should guess.

RUFFOLO, girlfriend, how about that, you and me have surgery on the same day!!  We'll dance together "in the dream world."  Gosh, I'd be so worked up if I had a margin problem and had to go back under.  My dog is better since the diarrhea stopped, which is what got him bedridden to begin with.  Today he once again walked by himself from the front porch to his bed, maybe 20 feet, hasn't done that for several days, and ate his old favorite Cheerios.  Husband talked to vet yesterday, vet is more hopeful than we are getting, but we'll talk to vet again on Friday since we're switching medicines yet again for his pain.  Thanks for mentioning my dog.  He is one beautiful animal, when he was a pup, my husband called him, "Son."  Wish I could work the picture thing, you would fall in love with him too.  But I have tried to work it for ages now, to get my photo into my bio page, I CANNOT do it.

SPECIALK, thanks for explaining stuff to me.  I remain mixed up, tho, on what EVERYone is doing treatment-wise, but you are ALSO an August 2 personage.  I will hold hands with you and Ruffolo.

ALL, I had my pre-op appointments at my cancer center and at my hospital, seemed to take forever, and towards the end of my hospital stuff (three diff places in there), I had to be transported by wheelchair because the peripheral neuropathy from chemo I have in my feet got to hurting so bad.  Today I don't have to do anything, so even tho my leg bones, feet, and dog-lifting muscles are worn slam out, I am happy to look outside at the beautiful sun brightening up the pear trees and green grass.  Always, Gail

Sara and GG, good luck on the second, I'll be thinking about you. I'm on the third. Wish the hospital had better food!! :)

I started phys. therapy yesterday. A little daunting. I am on the way to "lock shoulder" apparently and have a lot of work to do so that I can dress myself normally again one day, let alone play softball again! All the things we take for granted! You'd think the cancer would be enough! On the good side I went and orderedf my post surgery bras today and new chick fillets to stick in them...can't wait to get out of this cami thing, hot and uncomfortable!

Mamaoftwo, yes I had it in both breasts, but it was very small on the right and there was no indication of it being in the nodes so I was just disappointed, but I am feeling better emotionally now, thanks all of you for being here!!

Good news - The GS said he thought is was also scar tissue, but wants me to ask the PS.  I see him on the 11th but I am more at ease now.

Now we can concentrate on the Aug 2 girls!  Also, Dogeyed I completey understand puppy love.  My dear sweet cairn turned 10 yesterday.  He and I split a plate of chicken casserole in his honor.  He has been my therapy dog and would not leave my side or eat until I became a little more animated after my bmx.  He is a love.

Jen_H - do whatever you have too not to let your shoulder lock up!  I got so close to that same diagnosis.  It took me 6 months to be able to pull a shirt over my head with out doing the matrix.  I used it as much as I could and also had a cortisone shot but it still took me a long time to get over it and was never really frozen.  Will be thinking of you on the 3rd.

    Hugs to you girls!

Jen...I am working hard and doing everything the physical therapist told me I should! My worry is putting the therapy on hold next week while I get the other surgery done and stuff! How's your range of motion now?
