Shoulders Aching could this be mets?
For the last couple of months my shoulders have been hurting. I sleep on my side and after a couple of hours I will wake up from an aching pain in my shoulder on the side I was sleeping on and will switch to the other side which will also wake me after a couple of hours. After getting up for the day both shoulders will ache for a hour or so. I saw my onc. today and mentioned this to him. He had me go for a x-ray to see if it anything would show that could be causing this. Does anyone with bone mets think this could be bone met symptoms?

I can't speak for mets... But I am a shoulder maven, having had successful surgery on both shoulders. I would think having bilateral pain speaks more to weak and inflamed shoulders than it does to mets. When I began having pain in my shoulder after my cancer diagnosis, mets did cross my mind. I guess the new normal means every pain that we have will be considered a met until proven otherwise.
Good luck. -
Voraciousreader.....that's what my onc. said about both shoulders being involved that it is probably not mets but we need to be sure. Were you having this kind of aches in your shoulders before surgery?
-
Yep!

Check into adhesive capsulities. The start of it is pain when sleepting and then you'll lose range of motion. I have been dealing with this since November and it's not fun.
I doubt it's mets.

Coolbreeze... Any shoulder improvement????
-
After I got my cortisone shot, the pain went down (although it still hurts to sleep on it). But, range of motion still very limited. Since I was dx'd with mets in the meantime, I don't have time to do PT so am doing what I can at home.
My doctor said it will eventually go away but might take two years. I'm doubtful, my muscles arer atrophying.
I keep warning the newly diagnosed to exercise their shoulders!!!! I might die without ever sleeping my my comfortable position again - on my belly, arms under my pillow.

Oh..coolbreeze! I am so sorry you are dealing with so much! You are right about the muscles atrophying. I have been doing my strengthening exercises every single day since my surgery. I am determined never to have to deal with shoulder problems ever again!
Hope you get relief soon and get to enjoy sleeping on your belly again. I love to sleep on my belly too! -
Coolbreeze....I will google adhesive capsulities. Thanks for the info.

I do not know what mets is, but I had extreme shoulder pain on the mastectomy side, so much so that I took pain pills, which I try to avoid. Anyway, I spent some sessions with acupuncture and believe it or not, I have no pain there any more. There are other pains since my reconstructive surgery, using my own flap..but not in the shoulder. I did help to put a pillow under that arm when I drove.
Hope!!!

The results of the x-ray show arthritis. So it wasn't mets. Thanks for all your responses.

Patty, I too had a scare with my cervical spine. Chronic pain and wondering if it was mets as well. The results of the x-ray showed moderate arthritis .. it was a relief, but still causes pain.
It's seems so funny to say to someone, I'm glad it's arthritis!!
hugs,
Bren

Glad to hear that, Patty. Only on this board is arthritis relatively good news, but we will take what we can get, I suppose.
-
Your right, Athena! When they called and said arthritis I was thinking that's great news.
