Hi Frances, so sorry you're dealing with all this... Again! My port hurt for a good couple of weeks if not more. It was in my chest area and I'm thin so it really stuck out and was just very uncomfortable. I don't remember if it hurt more than my lumpectomy but I remember hating it. Hang in there, it gets easier. And having a port does make chemo much easier. (((((hugs)))))) Adele
-
Thanks Adele it is reassuring. My mind is running wild whole day today - worried sick that my body is rejecting the port and the port is getting infected etc etc. I just took a painkiller. Tomorrow I am going in for chemo and has been crazy thinking if my chest hurts so badly now, how are they going to prick me and deliver the drugs?
-
I hope all goes well tomorrow, thinking of you.
-
So sorry you are going through pain from the port. The docs tomorrow may have some answers for you. I have no experience with it, but sending you hugs and best wishes for chemo tomorrow. Hang in there xx

Hi all, chemo day. Thanks to all supporting me and praying for me. It has been a rough day and was back in the evening. I have good appetite today. Finished a bowl of rice with turmeric yogurt fish cooked with lemon grass for dinner and went to bed to rest waking up at 10 pm. Got hungry again and had a small bowl of tomato soup + a glass of juice + bubwig cottage cheese and flaxseed oil.My swelling from the port made it hard for the RN to access the port and that caused a lot of anxiety and pain for me. As for the TC chemo - it was ok. Once port is accessed I felt little sensation when she was administering the chemo. Didnt like the Benadryl though - my head went spinning for a long while. Its been a long day, hope I can put in some sleep tonight.
-
I had pain from my port surgery too. I remember it lasting over a week. It was quite a surprise to me because it didn't seem like a big surgery. The first port access for me was uncomfortable too (I had my first chemo two days after the port was put in). It definitely got better. It really will make the chemo much easier. The benadryl made my head spin a little too. The best thing to do is close your eyes until it passes. I never could sleep during treatments, but I know of a lot of people that napped thanks to the benadryl. I noticed that we have very similar diagnosis, with the exception of my tumor being larger. Get plenty of rest and be good to yourself. Drink lots of water. Chemo is very doable . . . just take it one day at a time.

Hi KSteve and Ellen56. This is day 2 of chemo and I wake up just feeling a little tired. I am trying to load up on fluids and keeping up with small meals each time. I do have appetite which is good. KSteve - the nurse told me to sleep after the benadryl and said most people do but I simply could not! there were millions of spinning lines in my head!
Ellen56 - my cytoxin was given within 10 mins I was told and didnt like the feeling of it going through the port. I will speak with the nurse the next time.
-
Thanks Ellen56! I will speak with them. Next chemo in 2 weeks time if I am fit to go.
-
Hi Frances,
Good luck to you on the next tx. It sounds as though you are doing pretty well so far, except for the port. I do think that should settle down after a while though. I had sleep issues throughout my chemo, a lot because of the steroids they px to combat nausea. That may be an issue for you too. Just learn to accept it as it comes, and remember it is only temporary. You will not feel like this forever. And do stay hydrated and stay up on your bm's, many of the drugs they give you can make you constipated, and that is definitely not an added thing you need right now!
BTW, I have a cousin who has lived in Singapore for many years doing missionary work. What part of the country are you in?
Take care,
Sharon
-
Hi Sharon I am living in the northern part of Singapore. Singapore is a small country and one can get from one end to another in 1 hour. Is your cousin still here in Singapore?

My port hurt for a week! My biopsy was a lumpectomy taking out a 2.8 cm tumor and that was easier to recover from. Four days after my port was put in I had to be back to the hosp for a scan. I asked to see a onc nurse so she could look at the port because it was red and warm (I was worried about infection). She said it looked normal which made me feel much better. I didn't have it accessed until a week later and I was very glad it was no sooner!
A comment on the benadryl. They can either slow down the drip or give you the oral form. At first it just made my head swim. But then it hit me hard and I almost passed out. They had me get up and my DH hung onto me while I walked back and forth in the infusion room till the dizziness was gone. From then on they gave me the pills and I would get tired but no swimming head!
BTW - I just found out two weeks ago that my cousin's daughter is in Singapore working at the US embassy. Apparently she loves it! My daughter lived in Hong Kong for 4 years but never made it to Singapore.
-
Christy - thanks for sharing. My port area still hurts and as I am allergic to the opsite plaster it is now burning hot and itchy too. just applied some calamine lotion to the area. Wondering if we can ask for less benadryl during infusion? Maybe I was given too much. Will speak with the onco when I see him on tues.
Singapore is a safe and clean place to live in and there is warmth all round. Will be pleased to show you around if you ever have a chance to come over!
-
Hi SherriG, thanks for your post. My port area is still a little sore. I was told my port was embedded a little deeper (for aesthetics reasons???) as I am also skinny in the area and the surgeon removed some breast tissue to embed it. As I am allergic to opsite, the skin has broken out and it is very itchy now and with chemo in me, recovery is also taking a while. Today is Day 7 of chemo and I am finally feeling things are picking up. It was worst Days 3 and 4 when I have absolutely no energy, tired but cannot sleep and couldnt eat. Now I am filling myself up to build up again.
Sun's out and I am off for a short walk:)
-
1 more day to chemo#2. Just took dexa. Dreading it but at least I can say after tomorrow - 2 down 4 more to go:)
-
Frances, nice to hear from you. My last one / hopefully the last one / is on Tuesday, 26 th. I know, dexa makes me " funny" . Good luck with less SE this time.
Karina
-
Thanks Karina ! Yours will be the last one!:) yeah!
-
Well, Frances, my onco says she will need full testng after this one, and see if I need more or not. It will be the sixth after surgery and the tenth one altogether!!! I am so tired of them, don't think can handle more, so a bit anxious about it and about more tests!!!!
-
Hi Karina I see. dear Lord please watch over Karina and return her to excellent health with no more cancer cells.
All the best Karina! -
Oh thanks. That was vwry sweet of you. All the best for your chemo tomorrow!!!
-
Karina all the best for tomorrow's last. Had no 2 today. Was much better as onco nurse gave me a local before accessing the port. I am still sore at port area. Infusion went without any issue. Came back a little drained as I was there from 10.30 am and finished only at 6.30 pm. A lot of waiting in between. Had a heavy dinner as I think dexa is making me hungry and whilst I can eat I better eat more. I know when dexa wears off, my appetite will come off too especially with the funny taste in my mouth.
Take care and May our good Lord watch over you tomorrow -
Frances, glad the chemo went smooth for you. Are you having two infusions in one week for a round?? That's how they do here in Armenia. I will have one tomorrow and the other one on Thursday or Friday. I feel exactly the same with dexa, but not having it for this round, I only had it with taxans. All ready for tomorrow and early night for me!!! Thanks for good wishes so much. Have a SE free days and keep strong. You will make it!!!!
Love,
Karina
-
Ellen, thanks for posting. That's what I told the staff who " granted " me with disability today, which is valid for one year and needs to be renewed next year. I said I am kicking the C now and going to be very healthy next year this time, so will not matter if you keep the status or not then!!! LOL .
Hugs,
Karina
-
Hi ladies, day 2. Didn't sleep well with dexa. Woke up twice and then took more than an hour to go back to sleep. Just took a zofran and going to have my wholewheat pita with eggs, tomato and lettuce. Karina I have two infusions in one. Taxo first for 1.5hours and then cytoxan for half hour. My dosage I think is 110 mg for taxo and 825g for cytoxan. I may have gotten the units wrong but I saw those numbers on the order chit.
-
Day 4 sucks big time. No mood for anything, have to force myself to eat and drink. So weak and hair all over the place. Going for second neupogen tomorrow and hopefully it perks me up.
Karina how are you doing? -
I hope you feel better real soon Frances. Big hugs and prayers going your way.
-
Thanks Jennifer!
-
Hi Frances, I am day 3, in lots of misery, been feeling bad from the first day. Just sleep and sleep and more disturbing sleep. Hope you feel better soon. Let us know.
Hugs,
Karina
-
Karina just hang in there. It's now 2.30 am and I am up 3rd time in 3 hours. Tired but can't get a decent sleep. Brain seems to be in overdrive but there is no more steroids in me!
-
Ah geez Frances -- I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble sleeping. I'll take the fatigue and constant naps anyday over the brain that won't be quiet. I hope you get some relief soon!
Karina - you're getting through it, girl! The chemo is almost behind you!
-
christy I got a foot massage just now and told the refloxologist to massage the area for sleep. Hopefully tonight I will doze off to wonderland...
