I just ran across this thread. I find it rather amusing -- the hypocrisy IMO.
I do not care how much money the employees of BCO make. I believe in capitalism. And, doctors have the right, even Dr. Weiss, to make a good or great salary. Now, with that being said, I wonder why it's okay for practicing physicians to take heat for making a good salary. Yes, it's been done here. We have debated this new health care law, the threads were deleted because of heated discussions. These physicians, like Dr. Weiss, should make a great salary. They have been to school for YEARS.
I also think it's quite amusing and hypocrital that some of you come here to praise this site when you've also threatened to take your money to another NFP and have your membership withdrawn...totally. And you complain constantly about the moderation and you try to tell the moderators HOW to moderate. And then you have the nerve to post some site where people go to review BCO. BTW, I haven't written a review. I'm quite torn.
I think you know what I'm trying to get across here. I'm not eloquent when it comes to words.
I know this is a bet off topic, but I will say....Good for you Dr. Weiss. You have been ridiculed for talking about some things that can MAYBE deter this dreaded disease. You have been accused of making people blame themselves. And many have not liked the fact that you were sponsored by Stonyfield Farms (I believe that's the industry).

Well, we have a few birds posting, a few of them extremely cute, glad you,re sticking around Birdlady
-
Whiterabbit, i was following suit to Molly,s post re stalking and with good reason, and i don,t recall addressing you
-
Oh, and Dr. Weiss also founded this amazing organization and website:
http://www.lbbc.org/Staff-Advisory-Board-and-Expert-Bios/Weiss-Marisa
Peace ladies, peace......
-
Belinda44 I wasn't aware of the other organization. I have just joined it. Personally I think Dr. Weiss has done much for BC awareness. I truly wish I had the energy she has.
-
I don't agree with every position that BCO --and Dr. Weiss-- has taken with respect to cancer treatment (eg: mammography guidelines, and I have qualms about the "Prevention is the best Cure" campaign and a few other things) but I appreciate and am extremely thankful for the existence of this web site and forum. On balance, it is a very worthy cause, an excellent site and being here has helped me immensely. Dr. Weiss's salary is probably on the low side by industry standards, and people deserve to be paid decently. I would never recommend my salary for anyone.
-
Am not familiar at all with Dr Weiss, her work or books, but if she promotes that prevention is the best cure, she would be in a REAL tiffy to find out how us prevention girls are being treated on her own site. Leia, apologies for not sticking to topic, but i believe you would agree. Cannot wrap my head around this info nugget, or rather bomb....
So it is those who oppose non conventional, who don,t agree with her positions, who are being disrespecful as "guests" on this site, who should reevaluate their presence here -
Dr Weiss is a radiation oncologist. From what I understand she believes in both conventional and complementary treatments. I would not presume to read her mind as to what she thinks of what is going on here. I do wonder what she would think of some of the things proposed as treatment on this site. I'm pretty sure she would agree with my choice of a lumpectomy and radiation as she is a radiation oncolgist.
-
Wouldn,t it be funny if she disguised herself promoting prevention as a cure on her own website becoming herself a victim of the hostility, i really hope the idea will occur to her
-
Luan .. I am quite certain Dr. Weiss is busy doing other things. Why would you assume she would be a victim of hostility? I suspect any involvement she has in alternative healing would be founded on fact and not whim.

Everybody needs a fantasy I guess
-
Well, her reputation is at stake here and reality is sometimes stranger than fiction wr
) Edited to add, it really would not take long to check the water for sharks, a few posts at the most
-
Don't forget Dr Weiss herself has recently been treated for breast cancer - it would be nice if she was shown some respect.
-
Luan, I do not understand your point about Dr Weiss and hostility. Whatever your point, I hope you are not suggesting that hostility caused her or anyone else's cancer. If so, it is a horrible point and suggestion.
This site has been a such a wonderful place for me. I came here looking for answers, and everyone helped me and answered my many questions. As an added bonus, I have met and become friends with some amazing women.
Dr Weiss deserves whatever money she earns. I have no problem with people being paid for the work they do.
Keep up the good work BCO!
-
I wish there was a like button ... I really like what you wrote Mary. I think Dr. Weiss deserves whatever she makes .. this is a wonderful site and I've made some wonderful life-long friends here.

Large nonprofits pay larger salaries than small ones. It is a fact, like it or not. BCO touches many more lives than any local NFP and Dr Weiss deserves a bigger salary than someone who works for a smaller organization. LIke I said before BCO is priceless.

We were not discussing Dr. salaries. We were just referring to how much her draw was from a non-profit organization.
Yes I know and I realize you wouldn't get my point. There have been women on this board moaning and groaning about stuff they do not like and threatening the mods if they didn't change things they'd think twice before donating to this sight. And now we hear how wonderful they think this site is.
It's very hard to explain unless you've been here a while. If you looked at other threads in this forum you'd see all the belly aching. I'm surprised they're not upset with the salaries.
I better shut up before I get booted off. I'm just tired of seeing the whining and now how wonderful everything is.
-
I think that some of the posts here as well as some of the "reviews" amount to nothing more than sabotage. Some concerted effort going on. JMO! Getting members riled up and making sure that funding is at a minimum. Look at the entire picture. I like to observe and I have been observing. What I see is an intention to take down this forum. Some who can't have their way are now striking at the foundation.
It is really sad to know that some feel envy when they see others getting along with each other.
-
shirley, have you no sense of the concept of nuance? as in the world not being black or white? what you see as hypocresy some of us see as measuring the pros and cons. I wouldn't have complained if I didn't like this site. I would just leave.
-
Shirley .. I got your point. But I don't know what you're talking about in general. Are you talking about the "Cyberbullied" thread? Who is whining about BCO?

I would think people who participate in this forum would be glad when people were satisfied with it and Dr Weiss's salary. I guess some people just like to make a fight out of everything. It would be beyond tragic if the disagreements here and negative reviews some posted apparently to get even with those who don't agree with them hurt BCO.
-
Ah, ShirleyHughes, some of us complained about deficiencies we found in the moderation of this website. BCO has made, and continues to make, significant changes for the better. I applaud their efforts. It's not perfect, but what in life is?
As Athena so correectly stated, the world is not black and white -- there are nuances to everything.
-
Thanks Birdlady! That pic was taken last fall at a get together at my house for 15 survivors. We all met on BCO and have been friends for the past four years! The women (and a few spouses) came from all over the U.S. for the weekend.
hugs,
Bren
EDITED: A tribute to our friendships which began on BCO.
-
Thanks rosemary, saved me having to post anything.

Bren
That is the kind of thing that bco gives us-good friends, good advice and hope. It is so sad to see people try to disrupt that.
-
Beautiful picture, Bren. It's true - a picture is worth a thousand words!
-
Lovely picture, Bren. That's what it's all about.
-
Birdlady, I do not think the site is perfect. There are things I would change. More moderation of certain threads or posts would be beneficial (suggesting urine as a cure for illness comes to mind); however, the OP mentions, and this thread is about, how much Dr Weiss earns. I have no problem with what she earns because I believe that on BCO the positives far outweigh the negatives.
ETA for clarity

Bren, Great picture - thanks for posting it. Looking forward to seeing your pictures from Canada next month too. Maybe the next "reunion" can be in New England??? We have lovely Fall colours

Covertanjou, exactly like thenewme.......... you twist my words around and deform their meaning to say something i never said, real bad habit or plainly astigmatic
