Need second opinion?

Hi all,

I did the biopsy of my right breast at one hopital and found out I have DCIS low grade. suggest to excision. (lumpectomy)

Now, I went to breast cancer and they reviewed the slices and agreed with hospital's decision.

Monday, I am going to see surgeon about my treatment- I guess lumpectomy?

Do you think I need another opinion?

Thank you for your support.

jj - I am assuming when you write "I did the biopsy" you mean a stereo biopsy?  The next logical step after this is a lumpectomy and that will give you a more complete picture. There really are no other alternatives at this point except do nothing (bad idea) or have a mastectomy (I don't think anyone would recommend one without more info).  Oh, I just thought of one more thing - you may want an MRI - if you do, have one before the lumpectomy as all the swelling etc that takes place during the lumpectomy will make the MRI difficult to read and interpert. My doctor wanted me to wait a year after the lumpectomy for an MRI.

The lumpectomy will tell you the size of the DCIS, margins, grade, etc.  Then you will have more info for choosing what your next step will be.

One step at a time, don't rush.

    Hi OldOakTree,

Thank you for your sharing and support.

"One step at a time" - That's the one I really need it and thank you.

Sometimes I am just stressed out and yes, I have to stay on top of it and one step at a time.

I was diagnosed on 6/15/2011.  I did MRI 7/1 and I am going to see the surgeon on Monday.

Sometimes I am afraid that do I wait too long for the lumpectomy?

    Thank you for your support.

With DCIS you have time.  I think with any surgery two opinions are not a bad idea.  I read somewhere someone was saying that another surgeon re-read her originals slides, and stated that she never had DCIS, and she had opted for a BMX.  I have zero idea if this person was telling the truth or not. When I had my 2nd opinion, my 2nd opinion doctor told me flat out that he knew the team that did the original review and did not expect any differences. He was hoping to be able to clearly define whether or not I had micoinvasion.  Neither team ruled it out but could not confirm it.  How frustrating.  It certainly helped me make the decision I did with my treatment.

    Hi Emaline,

    Thank you for your sharing.

     I saw your footnote of post "Diagnosis: 4/4/2011, DCIS, 6cm+, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/5 nodes, ER+/PR+"

How did you get this report? from biopsy or from lumpectomy?  From my ultrasound guided core needle biopsy, it only shows "DCIS low grade"

    Thank you.

My biopsy was an wire guided excisional biopsy, which is a lumpectomy.  They call them excisional biopsy before they confirm it is cancer, once they know it is cancer, it is a lumpectomy.  So it was after my lumpectomy/biopsy that I got all that information.
