Patty, do you have a crate? I crate trained my pooches and they did well.
-
Yes, I have been keeping her in that during the night which has kept her froming peeing until I take her out in the morning. During the day if she is in she is beside me on a leash so she can't wander very far. I go back to work in a couple of weeks so she also will be in that during the day. So I guess using the crate is the right thing to do.
-
I have used crates for every dog we have gotten. They get to the point they want to be in them. It's so funny it's security for them. When ever we have thunder it's the first place they go.
-
Patty .. Do you watch the Dog Whisperer? Cesar is fabulous with all kinds of training advice. Boxers are pretty bouncy and need a lot of exercise and a firm hand. But they are such lovebugs! Post a pic of him when you get a chance!
Bren

She really is a sweetheart, loves giving kisses. If I can ever figure out the picture posting I will post a picture.
-
Blue, sending a PM.
-
Awwww ... new puppy! I was going to post that Cindy was a dog trainer but I see she got here before I did. Boxers are very smart dogs ... bet you won't have much trouble at all.
Blue ... your grandson is total cuteness. Was he in a wedding? Looks like he is taking his job quite seriously

I don't like the snow or the heat either one. I don't think I'm that hard to please ... anywhere between 55 and 85 is fine with me. What happened to those seasons anyway?!! I think they were called Spring and Fall. Where did they go?
-
WR, he was the ring boy, but refused to carry the pillow........hahahahahha! That's my boy!
-
Thats funny blue. My son is getting married later this year, I can just see his son doing something like that.
-
White Rabbit .. I want to know what happened to spring too! Just checked NOAA and it's 99 here with a heat index of 119. I swear, it is just stifling outside.
Tim's home taking a nap and I just finished a report .. might be time for a beverage from the BCO Bar & Grill. An iced mocha sounds good! We used to own a coffee/espresso business so I can be the barrista.
Blue .. I just love your grandson! He didn't want to carry the pillow .. to funny!
hugs,
Bren

Cindy .. thanks for posting that article. But if I'm not the pack leader, who is? How does that play out in training? I don't use negative reinforcement on my dogs. I have three dogs and one of them is obviously the leader of the dog pack. But Tim and I are the pack leaders in the family.
What are your thoughts on this? What is the best alternative?
Thanks!
Bren
-
hillck. I so agree with you on dog obedience. I have never liked his show, and would never treat a dog that way. We have shelties which are very gentle animals, but are also easily scared. They are well trained but by using praise.
-
Thanks Cindy .. I completely agree with you. We reward ours with praise. My 15 year old basset is starting to have pee accidents on the carpet, but I don't punish him for it .. I just make sure I put him outside more often. He's old and probably losing his faculties, including his hearing and vision and I don't want to punish him for being old.
It's a hassle having to get him outside every hour, but better than the alternative. We don't do that dominance thing that Cesar does by making the dog lay down. But I do like his admonition to be calm and assertive.
Thanks for the tips!
Bren
EDITED: Cindy I would love to see that link. Even bassets can be trained and they are super stubborn.
-
Virgil is our pack leader!
-
We have always started trianing the day we bring the dog home. We walk them around the yard on a leash, and wait for them to potty before they ever come into the house. By the way my parents were trainers, and also showed the dogs. Not me just have them as pets way to much work, but it sure gave me joy to have puppies around as a kid.
I must add we never need a leash to take them out nor do we have our yard fenced. -
Blue .. that doesn't surprise me! hahahahaha! Can't wait to meet Virg and Lilah!
Kira .. my yard is fenced .. has to be as my border collie and lab would chase a deer for miles. I just don't have total control of the situation. ha!
hugs,
Bren
-
Oh I can imagine. I think Kira would love to chase the deer as well. She is good about stopping when I yell at her for chasing the rabbits.
-
I watch the Dog Whisperer sometimes and I really don't recall him ever being harsh with the dogs. It always seems to me he is training the owners not to reward bad behavior moreso than training the dogs
Calm and assertive owners makes sense ... dogs do pick up whether you are serious about something or not. It's kind of gross but one of our dogs had the poop eating thing going on and it was one of Cesar's shows advising redirecting the dog from the poop to a treat for leaving it alone that gave us the solution that worked with her. He certainly never advised any kind of punishment based actions in that case anyway.
I have always thought however that his success is more because he has such great confidence that the dogs just naturally follow his lead. Our two previous dogs were not that friendly to other people and I always noticed that at the vet's office it was the techs who confidently walked up to them and greeted them calmly that they responded well to. The more timid ... can I pet her? ... types always got grumped at.
-
Virgil is always grumpy!

Edited - 7/24/11. I wish I had never posted this link. It has led to evil.
-
Gee, I can guess who wrote some of those reviews. I'm so smart I scare myself!
-
Looks like a couple of people got tired of attacking us and went after BCO instead. Not nice IMO.
This place may have some flare-ups but it is a valuable resource for women who are dealing with breast cancer. Too valuable for anyone to try to hurt its fundraising ability just because of personal vendettas and petty squabbles.
-
Did you see the one that said,
"I would not allow threads dealing with politics, government run health care, alternate sexual life styles or religion including atheist and Muslim to be a part of "Breast Cancer" discussions."
That would preclude any discussion of Medicare and Medicaid as well as prayer. I had no idea that being an atheist made me religious - that's a new one.
-
Morning girls.
I emailed thenewme and she replied and said to tell you all, she is taking a sanity break and she misses you all too.
Sue
-
Hello, Susie - that is very hopeful, then. It seems as though she will be back eventually. Good.
-
I wanna know, if a Queen Bee can be a gangstah, does she get to wear black & yellow striped spats?
-
Just read the most recent roar - "alternate sexual life style" = every other night? Only on days of the month that numbers not divisible by 7? I didn't read the "reviews" closely enough - missed that!
-
Athena ... translation ... somebody thinks that only those views she personally agrees with should be allowed - all evil 'others' should be censored. Yikes ... some people are really full of themselves.
Oh well ... most people reading those reviews are probably smart enough to see the real picture pretty clearly.
-
Wow, I go see a client in Ft Myers and come back to 3 pages to read. Must be the heat keeping everyone inside. Karen , if I had had some time I would have stopped and met you for tea or a beer but it rained like %^$# and I was doing 50 MPH from Ft Myers to south of Sarasota and was really grumbling. Then it was pedal to the metal. I made it there in 1 hour 20 minutes and coming back was two hours. Grrr another wasted 45 minutes of life.
Tonight I am suggesting O' Bistro since I am pooped after the drive and marathon session with said client. If DH goes for it, dinner will be hormone free Asian steak salad. Yum...
-
Barbara, I assume you took I-75? I find that highway unfairly stacked in favor of teenagers, IMO. I have smelled burnt tires while driving there many a time. Glad you made it back safely.
