    1.  Breast cancer is not preventable.

    2.  ACS does not "cause" cancer, nor do the CDC, AMA, etc.

If you would like to learn more about cancer, I suggest reading "The Emperor of all Maladies".

Really, I'm fine with everyone trashing their overhead costs, but the ACS does not cause cancer.  It existed long before the ACS, AMA, etc were a glint in anyone's eyes.

Want to echo what Lynn18 is saying - read the Emperor of all Maladies.  Cancer breakthroughs have languished because the establishment keeps going down these blind alleys and lingering there sometimes for 10, 20, 30 years.  I hate to see us go down another one called "prevention" and linger there for another 10 years.

I also want to emphasize the futility of "awareness".  I am constantly alarmed regarding the number of young childbearing women joining these boards.  Women with young children.  Women at the peak off their earning capacity.  Many of these women are Stage IV at diagnosis.  Since mammos and self exams do not work as well for them, how does "awareness" help.

Yes - Epstein's blaming the ACS for a non-cure is a bit much. I blame more universal human frailties, as well as the sheer difficulty of the "case."

BTW, we should be mindful of not posting entire articles. It is a violation of copyrights laws. Two or three paragraphs with the link is fine.

Prevention is the cure..... at least in a way.  We can do what we can do to convey that avoiding hormone laden food, avoiding alchohol and tobacco, avoiding carcinogens and getting plenty of exercise may keep us healthier.

Let's go after BIG SODA rather than organizations that do anything to fight cancer..

apple who hates cancer and now doesn't drink soda but will have a beer occasionally or a glass of wine if it is not gutrot.

    2tzus:

The book is very intense and a couple of times I've put it down for a day and read a mystery.  The author is so good - so talented, you really can't stop reading, for the most part.

Awesome book, indde. So well written that it reads easily. Have it on my Kindle, and will finish it up soon. It is powerful and disturbing, and quite the eye-opener.

Frankly, I don't think that the ACS is causing cancer.

But I do think that they ought to be putting more funding into the fight against cancer. And their top retirees could still live the good life on just a little less?

I hate the whole Pink October thing as much as the next person, but don't more women get diagnosed with BC in October because the attention leads them to get screened?  I thought I read that somewhere.

There's a link to a study on the breastcancer.org home page finding that mammograms do save lives.  I don't have a dog in that fight as I have dense breasts and mammograms are of limited value for me.

About the "retired" individuals on the ACS 990 for the year 2008 (reported in 2009): the 990 form says they all worked in 2008, and retired at some point in 2008, and will receive no further compensation from ACS. This is all spelled out in the "notes" pages (pp 58-62 of the PDF) following the "compensation" form (page 57 of the PDF).  Of the "7 million dollars paid to retired people" -- $2 million is deferred compensation, i.e., pensions that will be paid out over the remainder of their retirement, but reported to IRS in the year of their retirement.
