Nausea & Elevated Liver Enzymes
Hello,
My sister was diagnosed in early June with IBC- mets to liver, lungs, bones, including skull. Her right hip was pretty bad, making walking difficult and painful. Initially, her oncologist thought she'd need hip surgery to stabilize the hip before treatment could be started. We waited a week for a ortho onc consult. He said she did not need surgery so treatment could indeed be started. That same day her oncologist layed out the treatment plan: tamoxifen, zoladex, and a once a month bone strengthening shot (I can never remember the name) as well as 10 sessions of radiation to her hip and skull. I asked her oncologist whether that plan was good for IBC w/ extensive mets. She said yes, because they wanted to take care of the mets damage to her hip with the radiation, and chemo and radiation could not be given together. The concern was that my sister would fracture her hip. I had my doubts because all the IBC patient stories I've read always started with chemo first. My sister was so happy to start treatment.
The morning she was to start her radiation my sister said she felt nauseous - we thought it was due to being nervous, however her nausea continued and was persistent. Radiation onc didn't think it was related to radiation. This raised a red flag to me, but not for my sister. My sister thought it was related to the radiation to her skull because her head felt "huge". Over the weekend the on call doc ordered Zofran for the nausea - he did think it could absolutely be from the rads. Zofran didn't work. I went with my sister to her oncology appt yesterday and told her doctor that my sister's nausea/vomiting was persistent and I was worried about her liver or other progression. She sent us down to the lab to get blood work and sure enough my sister's LFTs are significantly elevated. Her liver was not enlarged on palpation, nor is she jaundiced. My sister will have another scan tomorrow to check for progression and cut her radiation short by two days to start chemo on Friday, which will be Taxol (but not Avastin as previously discussed because of the issue with the FDA). My sister's cancer is er+,pr+, her 2 - The good thing is the radiation to her hip took her pain away after only 2 sessions. I am very worried that my sister may now have a good hip and skull but what about the rest of her?!
From what I know elevated LFTs do not cause nausea. What could be causing the nausea? All my searches on nausea with bc are usually due to chemo. Why did her LFTs jump from mildly elevated less than one month ago to the 120s for ALT, AST and 310 for Alk Phos?
Lorazepam was given for her nausea and so far it is working, it's also helping her sleep. This morning my beautiful sistery had her first real meal in more than a week. I hope her scan tomorrow doesn't bring us any more bad news.
All responses are greatly appreciated.

Hi sistery. When my liver enzymes were just ever so slightly high, I couldn't stop throwing up. It doesn't take much damage to the liver in some folks to make them queasy. I am glad to hear that the lorazepam is working. Good luck with the scan tomorrow.

Thank you, gracie1, for your response. You made me feel better. Thank God my sister's scan did not show any significant changes from the 1st one a month ago. Her doctor thinks it may have been the Tamoxifen that elevated her liver enzymes. It seems the decision to wait to do the radiation to her hip was not a bad one afterall, because now my sister no longer has hip pain and has regained her mobility. The lab work she did yesterday showed the LFTs while still elevated, have come down, so that is a good thing. She also started chemo yesterday, for which we are very grateful.
Thanks again, gracie! hugs!
