Speaking of hosiery and the royals, here's a slightly amusing story:

Way back in 1981, Princess Margaret was visiting Toronto and she was invited to spend some time at her namesake hospital (Canada's leading cancer hospital, BTW).  I was a volunteer and on the Auxiliary executive and was selected to be introduced to her, along with 3 other volunteers.

Anyhow, it was July, and we were having a heatwave, but the powers-that-be insisted that we wear pantyhose (or stockings) along with our dress uniform.  Well, we bitched but did it anyhow.  Then the Princess walks into the room and......she wasn't wearing any hose!  Her legs were well tanned, but very varicose-veiny (meow).  But after we noticed her bare legs, we were then blinded by a huge diamond and sapphire brooch decorating her white dress.

Oh yes, she was very nice, asked if we minded she smoke (yep, in a cancer hospital) and then one of us (not me!) raced over to pick up her cig butt as a souvenir after she left!

As usual, I'm late to some comments. Pantyhose -- UGH! I wear thigh-highs... All of the hosiery part and none of the really hot and unpleasant and binding parts. But you have to be careful and get the ones with elastic tops and not ones with rubber backing on the tops, because the rubber will peel your skin right off if you sweat at all. I use L'Eggs Queen sized ones (in the purple box) -- Q because I am 6'1" and need the length. And better still, if you put a run in one, just throw it away and get out the next one. None of this cutting off the bad leg and doubling up the panty hose like I used to do as a starving grad student....

    Thrifty tip for the evening...

    Love blonde jokes, Blue!

    Night to all!

I'm old enough to remember when we thought panty hose were the best invention ever.  Sure beat those girdle or garter belt things.  Now I moan and groan and carry on when I have to wiggle into a pair of them ... which thankfully is not too often.

Always enjoy reading this thread and the lively discussions.  A few pages back someone mentioned and quoted Cokie Robert's eulogy for Betty Ford.  I often forget that Cokie is a breast cancer survivor.....another admirable survivor. I remember how she worked on tv during the time she was undergoing chemotherapy.  Another classy lady who is surviving and thriving.  (Used to love watching her and Sam Donaldson on the old Sunday morning David Brinkley program).

When I was in college they came out with a wonderful new invention. Thigh high hose with some sort of rubber around the top. The panty girdle had the same sort of rubbery stuff and gripped the top of the hose. Some sort of prehistoric velcro. The only problem was that sometimes it didn't work and your hose would suddenly be around your ankles. Interesting times.

I was wondering why I never win the lottery - I am a blonde :)

DH said Murdoch doesn't own ALL of the papers, but he does own the main one in our city.

Shopping done, washing done. Lamb was on special, so lamb roast tonight. Been chilling listening to Neil Young CD's. I bought "Comes a Time" yesterday - I think I might wear it out. Also played After the Goldrush - boy does that bring back some memories of the 70's. Now DH has Joe Cocker on :)

    Have a great weekend girls!!!

I just saw the weirdest thing. I was watching tv this evening and a commercial for the Cancer Treatment Centers of America came on talking about this women with Stage IV breast cancer...yada, yada...and I knew I had seen her before. I finally realized I had seen her on one of those Real Life Mystery shows a couple of weeks ago (Dateline or something) in a story about how her husband had been kidnapped in Mexico and was held for months and finally returned when she negotiated a lower ransom or something like that. What are the odds that this women would show up on national tv twice? I googled it to make sure it was the same woman and it is..same name, but the news story that came up on google says he was kidnapped from the Washington area. This all seems odd. Seems like all the pieces don't fit. Trying to figure out if both stories are real. Thoughts?

Gracie .. what a strange story.  I thought the people in the Cancer Centers ads were real people, not actors.  Maybe she was an actress in the commercial.

Going to be another hot and humid day here.  arghh.  I miss the springtime weather.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Gracie, I am assuming she is an actress - as I assume all of those cancer center people are - I may be wrong.

    HappyLibby, you said:

    LOL.

    Wecome Belinda!

Edited to add: Bren - We are being promised one more semi-decent day with low humidity and temperatures below 90. Tomorrow is a different scenario.

Re the weather:  All that hot air you've been experiencing (and much of which was generated in Washington, I sure!) is flowing northward and we're in for some very hot days and nights.  Mixed with humidity (we call it the humidex factor here) I think I'll be staying indoors for awhile.

Well, humidity is my way of life and I actually love it. Wouldn't if we had no breeze. Heading to the pool in a bit then off to the hairdresser for a cut/color. My hair really sucks but later today it will look great.

    Welcome Belinda.

    Can't wait until 8/12.

Don't they have to put a disclaimer on those CTCA commercials if it's an actress? (They even have to put disclaimers on the dishwasher detergeant commercials to tell you the little people cleaning your dishes aren't real!) Funny that they'd risk their reputation like that. It was mentioned at the beginning of the kidnapping story that she was an actress in her teens but gave it up when she married her husband. The whole kidnapping thing seemed so outrageouos....how her husband was a respected member of the Mexican community...his father was so wealthy, yet he was never mentioned as contributing to the ransom money etc. No biggy, just one of those things that make you go hmmmm? Makes you wonder if that whole kidnapping story was real or not.

    Hi, Belinda,

Welcome - wondertul thread here, and women kind enough to explain the jokes to those of us who don't get it on the first tryEmbarassed

I forgot that Cokie Roberts also has bc - she and Betty Ford were very close friends for years and years.  I loved that Cokie used the word Comidity - wish we cold generate more of it. And if you remember the old DB show - we must be about the same age!!!!!!

I gave up nylons of any sort decades ago.

Recently I ventured into the nylons section of the drug store, bought some knee highs, cut them up and sewed them into liners to contain the micro beads in my knit boob.  Good to know they can be useful still.

    Linda,

This is not scientific, but I have a theory that whoever invented Pantyhose, is related to the person who invented Mammograms ( squooooosh, hard!)  Really - both effective in their own way, but jeez, there must be an easier way!

BTW: I asked the Mods to close the thread I started Complementary and Integrative Healing.  The intention was for it to be a place where those of us who have been through so much,  could share what worked for us, for the newly diagnosed person to have some sense of possibiliy, hope, and understanding that she was not alone on this rocky path.  Well, it turned into, you guess it, a Chemotherapy bashing, miracle cure propaganda food fest.Frown

It's impossible to turn that kind of cr-p* ( oops, I forgot the a) into a discussion, when anything said against the cr-p is called "bullying."  SO, for those who participated, we tried.

I've asked the Mods to start a FORUM: Complementary and Integrative Healing/Medicine, whatever words they want - and leave the other Forum Alternative, Holistic,

That's the only way I can see to be able to have intelligent information shared, questions asked and answered, and experiences shared to help each other on this Unchosen Path.

THANK YOU FOR THE JOKES - I just wasn't able to read them last night.  Too sad to see efforts being destroyed, but I'm fine today... laughing with all of you - thanks, sunflowers

Sunflowers .. I hope the mods can create a new forum.  Why there has to be talk about 'miracle cures,' etc. all the time .. I just don't get it.

    Morning Toby .. and welcome!

Tim is coming home for one night .. yay!  He'll bbq for dinner so I won't be embarrassed to post what I eat for a change!

    BTW:

A VERY good use for pantyhose.  Use them as ties, one foot to each drain, then around yur neck, and you can take a shower without the drains hanging!!!  very helpful ;))))  Will try to remember to tell HL when it's time ;)

Thanks, C-S!  Actually, the nurse navigator at my hospital told me they give a belt to hang the drains on.  They send you home with two, so you can have one wet and one dry for showers.  At that point, my highly-overprotective DH announced, "Yeah, she won't be taking showers until the drains are out.  She doesn't get dirty, we have air conditioning, and I'll be giving her a sponge bath."  The nurse navigator looked very surprised Surprisedand tried to reassure him that a shower would be OK, but he was having none of it.  He's such a love -- wants to protect me.  I'll be taking showers.  Wink

Sunflowers -- You really confused me with your drains -- until I finally realized which sort of drains you were talking about!

Pesto is great on sandwiches with cheese and tomato.  And here's another neat way to use as a salad course when fresh garden tomatoes are ready:  slice the tomatoes (about 3/8 inch thickness), place a slice of buffalo or smoked mozzarella on top, and then add a dollop of pesto.  So good!
