Well you know, we stage IV people on SS disability are just leeches, bleeding the country dry.  Not to mention those lazy seniors.  (That was sarcasm, not an attack on stage IV people or seniors.)

Remember to call your congress-person today to ask them not to cut SS or give a payroll tax holiday!

Yeah, lazy Stage IV leeches WHO QUALIFY FOR SS BECAUSE THEY PAID INTO IT FOR YEARS.

Stupidity and ignorance should never be allowed to dominate a debate. That's why I'm happy that the Murdochs are under the gun.

    I agree with you, E.

I don't know, but I really think the Republicans are shooting themselves in the foot on this one.  They really come across as unreasonable and out of touch with reality.

I believe they  need to get some sort of agreement in place by the 23rd so that it has time to work its way through congress before the August 2 deadline.

Well, ducky, the Republicans have stated openly and repeatedly that their primary goal is to make Obama a one-term president.  And this is what they're trying to do with the manufactured debt ceiling "crisis."

More than likely.  And if they drop our bond rating they won't raise it again overnight.  This is going to cost us a lot of money, and for NOTHING.

    E-

I really just want to cry when I listen to the news.  Won't say much, cuz don't want to start a food fight, but what happened to the common good, that, honestly, we are one country, indivisable, all that stuff used to mean something.  What would have happened if we didn't years ago, est. ss and medicare, which we all PAID for - and things liek Pell grants, so more people CAN go to college, and HeadStart, so those kids who aren't as lucky ( and it really is luck!) to have more advantages get to start their education at more of a level playing field...and investments in education, and public infastructure are part of what being a country means...

ooohh.....my...I said I wouldn't start..ok.  Sorry...I just feel so, so, so sorry for the people in DC who are really trying to make things work  - and yes, I AM proud of the President of the USA.

Some people are not true patriots and do not put "country first".....

.....quite despite their protestations to the contrary.

And all they care about is that the black man only stays until 2013.

I love snakes - the bigger the better. But not the ones we have in DC with suits.

One point about Social Security is, it has no relationship to fixing the long-term budget deficit.  Even when the accumulated trust fund is exhausted, current law requires that Social Security benefits be paid out of Social Security system revenues (not general funds).  So, in the worst case scenario, if nothing is done on the system's revenue side (e.g., raising the cap on income subject to FICA), benefits would take a haircut (painful, but the progam would still be there -contrary to the scaremongering, it's not going to go bankrupt and disappear), and THE FEDERAL DEBT WOULD NOT CHANGE BY A PENNY!!

(Sorry for shouting, but it makes me nuts that Social Security is getting dragged into the debt ceiling discussion.)

It also makes me nuts when legislators pretend that Medicare - and NOT rising health care costs generally - is the problem.  On what planet is it more economically sustainable to ask the old and sick to carry the burden, than to carry it as a society?  At some point, on the trajectory we're on, health care costs will be devouring our entire GDP.  Shifting costs from the federal government to individuals doesn't change that.  Delivery system reform, comparative effectiveness research and other systemic reforms might . . . but, oops, the people who want to gut Medicare are opposed to them.  Oh well.

Blue - your statement of worldwide cannot be overemphasized. One aspect nobody has considered is the effect on the Chinese economy, amongst other things. We would have a Tsunami whiplash.

Even now, the closer we get to the date the more the potential damage. Mitch McConnell should be ashamed of himself.

    ETA: Well said, L.

That is one reason why I was so annoyed at the stupid cable pundits who called Paul Ryan's Medicare voucher plan "bold." There is nothing "bold" about leaving the elderly and disabled in the lurch. It is sheer cowardice.

1Athena1.............you said it..........I just hinted at the reason they don't like him.......and isn't that a shame........I think he is a breath of fresh air in a community of "old farts" that need to retire, and realize they have been carried on the backs of the American people for too many years..............How about someone locks those assholes in a room, no daylight, no sleep, no paycheck, no food, until they come back with an answer.............................but oh no, that would not be  "american"........................is what they are doing to "our President", and the country of people who pay their taxes which pays the salaries of those "freaks".......................I think so........................maybe it is time for Obama to take off the "kid gloves", put on his "boxing gloves", stop being the "gentleman" that he has always displayed himself as, and say it like it is....................he knows the reason, but he is too kind to say it outloud.

They need to get rid of the "old assholes" in D.C. and get some "new life" in there.......................and ladies I am 76............hardly a youngster...................might say I'm just someone tired of the pettiness, the "its all about me" attitude, and a President so disrespected in this country it is a disgrace, to our nation and the rest of the world

I belive the World likes Obama.............its his own country that doesn't.............shame on the U.S.A.

Maybe I should be sorry that I helped start us down this road to weekend deletion hell, but I really am not.  It's Friday, and maybe the best thing would be to leave this topic alone, but I feel so strongly about this!  The GOP is using the same playbook they used in 1995, and I hope it costs them dearly.  McConnell doesn't want us to default either, but by throwing out his option of allowing the President to raise the debt ceiling without the GOP support, he is trying to start a chicken crap advance attack so that the GOP can use that as an election ploy with their base to say that Obama is the cause of the high national debt. Classic passive aggressive!  Listening to Obama right now and I hope he stands his ground on insisting the ultra wealthy pay their fair share.

Maybe we should put in our lunch orders.  A sangria for me.

Athena..........just read your little "quote" at the bottom of your profile...........love it..............so true............I had a cousin who was married to a Mafia guy, and always refused dinner out with him at a good Italian restaurant..............never knew who was coming through the front door, or if you could get a table with your back to the wall................haha

Oh, thank you for mentioning sangria, makes me calmer & cooler just thinking of all of us sitting around a table, with a big cold glass pitcherful, probably the pitcher is "sweating" cuz it's so warm outside and the sangria is so cold, and we're all about to fill our glasses - please pass the taco chips, oops...dribbled salsa on my t shirt...

Ooooh!  Homemade green tomato salsa for me, please.  Just finished mowing, so that glass of sangria feels great against my forehead.

IFBCAngel - the tomatilloes are all in flower - if the bees get busy, will have them soon, can't wait to add them to the salsa too.

Serenity - what a lovely word.

I had never made the green tomato salsa, until the Master Gardners served it at Farmers Market last year.  It was awesome!  I have left over pork chile verde for lunch to look forward to.  This conversation is making me hungry and thirsty.

    Awesome, Bren!

On a totally unrelated topic: who here is planning to see the final Harry Potter movie this weekend?  My daughter went to a midnight showing last night, says it was awesome, and can't wait to see it again.  So she and I will probably be going tomorrow.

I ALWAYS dribble salsa on my shirt!  I am a public menace! DH says I can get dirty faster than any two-year old he has ever seen (we have no kids, so I'm not sure he's seen a lot of two-year-olds!).

Congrats, Bren, on the weight loss!  Wonder how much I'm going to lose later this summer?  It is a question that I have been pondering!

Happy .. I don't know how much boobs weigh, but I don't think 10 lbs would be an unreasonable expectation.  And you will have a wonderful flat tummy to boot.

I'm with you .. I can't eat anything without it running down my shirt.  I made Tim a cake the other day and went to lick the spoon .. hello .. I had chocolate on my shirt, pants, flipflops and the floor!
