Sunscreen and fake tan
Do any of you fellow LE ladies have a recommendation for a good sunscreen that does not go on too thick? I have the Vanicream spf30 but it is thick and you really have to work it in. Also, any LE safe fake tanning ideas? I was wondering about a mineral powder type? I mainly want it for my legs but don't want to tax my lymph system any more than necessary.

Hmmmm... I am always playing with sunscreen. I like the type that is a mineral block versus the chemical kind... but that is just me because I am freakishly paranoid about parabens and chemicals. SO, I like most that contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide as your active ingredients. Having said that, I don't have a favorite one, but Neutrogena does make one AND Yes to Carrots just put out a new one that I bought but have not yet tried. Also I think the one I use the most is Jason's Naturals. It is hard to find a mineral sunblock that does not leave you with a bit of a white haze... I am hoping maybe the Yes to Carrots will be THE ONE! I will try it today and let you know what I think... that is, if the sun comes out today... LOL
-
Thanks for the feedback Nordy! I agree 1000% about the no parabens and chemicals. Looking forward to what you think about Yes to Carrots.
As for the mineral base I was really thinking about the fake tan question. I found one made by Laura Geller called Baked Body Frosting. This is the list of ingredients:
Mica, Talc, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Dimethicone, Nylon-12, Isopropyl Palmitate, Polysorbate 20, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Phenoxyethanol, Lauroyl Lysine, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, Retynyl Palmitate, BHT, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Centella Asiatica Leaf Extract, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499).

Neutrogena makes good ones - and they don't sweat off easily. Regarding the fake tan stuff, I quit it after the cancer diagnosis. It can't be good for me, and the smell grosses me out.
-
Suzybelle I agree with you on the fake stuff. Especially since my LE diagnosis. That is why I may try this baked mineral brush on tan. You have to apply it every day like makeup but I think it would help me feel better about my snow white legs until mother nature can give me a little natural glow.
I will never sunbathe again nice my melanoma but my dermatologist agrees that I don't need to run from the sun either. Just need to be a lot more diligent in wearing my sunscreen everyday on my arms, chest, face, etc. That is why I am looking for a good one that doesn't take so dang long to rub in. I'm a little impatient and on a fast track to get out the door in the AM! -
Journey, I was outside gardening all weekend and now my LE arm is all striped...I had on kinesio tape, and when I removed it last night I had a zebra tan.
NOT ATTRACTIVE.

Hi all,
I know that compression garments provide minimal protection from UV rays, and my long-sleeved SPF 50 jacket has been mighty hot these past few days. I'm looking for an alternative for really hot days, so I figured I would tap the collective wisdom of the board. I've got two questions:
1) Has anyone tried wearing compression garments on body parts that have sunscreen on them? If so, what type of sunscreen did you use, and were the garments damaged?
2) Does anyone know of a company that sells non-compression sleeves that are specifically meant to be worn with compression garments.
Here's what I have found.
Coolibar now sells a sleeve that is SPF 50 and is meant for "regular" arms. It's described as fitting snugly, but depending on what this means, it might be useful for folks with LE who want to avoid sunscreen or hot jackets:
http://www.coolibar.com/07009.html
Coolibar also sells swim sleeves:
http://www.coolibar.com/07011.html
Again, they are described as having "snug fit", but depending on what this means, it might be useful, especially to those who swim without compression garments.

Hmmm, interesting. You'd have to be sure they didn't bind at the top or the wrist. They also have a looser sleeve that seems to extend over the back of the hand. This one you can buy individually instead of as a pair:

Anybody tried these?
Binney -
Thanks Binney -- They look fantastic. Not sure how long they are, but I am ordering one and will report back. --KS1

I ordered the non-compression SPF sleeve that Binney mentioned:
http://www.coolibar.com/07003.html
I just went for a 2 mile walk wearing the sleeve. FWIW, here are my observations
1) The sleeve is short -- excluding the hand flap, it is about 15" long, and it doesn't stretch in length. (For comparison sake, a "regular, small" juzo 2001 soft sleeve is about the right length on me, and the coolibar sleeve ended about 1- 2 inches shy of the top of my day garment )
2) My lower arm is relatively large compared to my upper arm and, on me, the top of the sleeve was very big, but the forearm fit fairly well. If your swelling is greater in the upper arm than lower arm, this might work out well for you.
3) There is no band or any other mechanism to keep the sleeve from sliding down. On me, the top of the sleeve was overly generous and so the sleeve slipped down. If your upper arm is large, this might not be a problem.
4) The fabric doesn't breathe as much as I had hoped (or as my coolibar jacket). It was about 95 degrees out and humid when I walked. I definitely was much warmer and sweated more wearing it than when I took it off.
5) The fabric is soft and stretches quite a bit circumferentially, but not in length. The beige color is slightly lighter than a jobst off-the-shelf beige 15-20 mm Hg.

I just tried Jane Iredale fake tan. I don't have the ingred list because it was a sample but I will look into it. It was easy to apply and looks pretty good. I think Iredale tries to use safe ingredients.

FOR FACE: CLINIQUE SUPER CITY BLOCK, 40 SPF
I have been using this EVERYDAY for many years and nobody ever correctly guesses my age. SUNSCREEN WORKS.
FOR BODY: Neutrogena DRY TOUCH or when I am feeling cheap, any BABY formula out there..
-
Where do you get the Jane Iredale fake tan stuff? I like to have a little color on my legs but no longer suntan due to years of skin cancer.
Thanks!

I've gotten a spray-on tan at a salon a couple times this summer. Looks great, is nice and even and lasts about two weeks (cost $25). I looked at the ingredients and they are all natural. The main ones being beet juice (!), aloe, caffeine and some vitamins. The technican said that when she was doing training, she was told that (although they didn't recommend it) it was safe enough to drink!

Check out the ewg.org/skincare website. There is a whole section on sunscreen products etc. Its a great tool to sort the good products form the bad. I am trying to elimimate the parabens in all my skin care products as well but finding the safest brands can be difficult. There is one sunscreen called Carribean Sol which I liked. I also tried a few of Alba's while still mixing in some of the sunscreens i still had that I will ultimately discontonue like Panama Jack and the store brands. Fortunately I tan easily and as long as i have some sort of sunscreen on I usually avoid the burn. I just came back from the beach for a week with a tan and no issues. Its my favorite place to be. I just need need to be more careful and cover up sooner than I used too!
Oh and No Fake tanning for me I don't like the smell and there has to be too many chemicals in them if they smell that bad!

Okay, this is just me, but I have totally embraced my Casper-like whiteness.
I paint my toenails black or bright red and just walk around looking like a delinquent Little Orpan Annie.
This actually works well for me.
-
Suzy!!!!! I needed that.

Thanks, Suzy! I've been feeling so white this week! Everywhere I look it's lovely tans and cleavage. You've given me a new way to look at my Casper-like whiteness!

: ) Suzy.
I am still so white for it being August! Just not out in the sun much this summer for some reason. Headed for a week at the beach in a few days so I'll get sun then! Just got to find the right sunscreen to wear while there. -
I have always been Casper white and learned to live with it. I tried to gradually tan one summer when I was much younger and could not even get the color of honey. I am either white or lobster red! After several basal cell growths cut from my face I slather on the sunscreen. Suzy, is there an tan nail polish? Are you red headed like Orphan Annie? Becky
-
Suzy, a delinquent Orphan Annie?!
And Daddy Warbucks is the head of the mafia, right? Do you write graphic novels, by any chance (the kind that look like giant comic books)? You should! You could star in it
.
C'mon, Suzy, write us a graphic LE novel! It can have brownies in it....

Hands down favorite sunscreen is Terrasport. Paraben free and works awesome! I have worn it under my Jobst and Lymphediva garments without issue.

Thanks, Nordy. I haven't seen tha tbrand, but I'll look for it!

Snort. I'm afraid my graphic novel would be waaaaaaay too boring.
Delinquent LO Annie washing clothes...unloading the dishwasher...picking tomatoes...
Yes, Becky, I am a red-head.

I found a make up called 'makeup forever - body and face makeup":
http://www.makeupforever.com/products/face-body.html
I only use it on my legs. It does not come off on clothes and stays on for 3 days. It covers just about anything and looks totally natural. I can't do the fake tan thing unless I want orange knees and toe knuckles. Trust me I've spent tons and tried them all. 'Ban de soleil' was the only product that ever worked for me and they don't make it any more. This stuff is amazing! I use it on rare occasions for formal events.Comes in many shades. You would want to buy your first in a store to match your skin tone. But once you do that, on line is definitely cheaper! My legs haven't seen the sun for 4 years and are so white it's depressing!
-
Doe,
It's good to hear from you! My legs have ALWAYS been white, and many years ago my SIL saw me with white socks on and said, "Your legs are whiter than your socks." It's almost true! Talk about depressing...but that's just my skin.
