When I googled "breast cancer free screening" I got a lot of hits. Unfortunately, I am having computer cut and paste problems and can't past the relevant URLs here (arg)
Here are some options:
THE CDC 1 800-511-2300
State of CA Cancer Detection Program (Sacto)
1-800-511-2300 or 916-449-5300
In Palo Alto the Breast Cancer Connection center offers some free screening service. This is too far for you but the women who answer the helpline are super helpful and they might be able to point you to local services. Their # is 650 326-6686
good luck!

I would also suggest that you post in another thread where you may get more hits. Try "not diagnosed but worried". There's also a thread for insurance and insurance issues. These might throw the net a little wider and get you more responses. Good luck to you.

jmarie,
Check out this page: http://www.cdph.ca.gov/programs/CancerDetection/Pages/CancerDetectionProgramsEveryWomanCounts.aspx
Hope this gets you where you need to go -- that link is to the California part of a national program called the
National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP)

jmarie, if you are under the age of 40, also reach out to Susan G. Komen in the Sacramento area.
They just got a grant to expand screening services for women under 40: http://www.healthedcouncil.org/programs_breast_komen.html
Their own webpage currently says:
"Thanks to the generosity of donors and sponsors, our Affiliate is able to fund many breast-health and breast cancer-related programs in this area.A list of these programs will be posted soon. Please contact our office at 916.492.6474 if you are looking for a local resource and we will be happy to refer you."

I know it's been over a month now, but I hadn't seen this post until now...
In California (for uninsured women):
For diagnosis: Every Woman Counts
http://www.cdph.ca.gov/programs/cancerdetection/pages/cancerdetectionprogramseverywomancounts.aspx
For treatment (picks up after diagnosis): Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Program (BCCTP)
