I'm hungry!

So after my rads onc told me weight loss would help my LE, I asked the LE what she thought.

I said if I lost 30 pounds would I still need to wear a sleeve?

Her answer was, a lot less often. Maybe only for strenuous activity.

It's worth a try.

I have struggled with my weight forever, it's been a road block to a lot of things. I've been as much as 205, (for like a day after I came home from Hawaii), right now I am 180 and 5"6'.

I love food, food blogs, cooking, going to restaurants, Top Chef. Food makes me happy. Pie at county fairs, that kind of thing.  Since I have had the LE dx it's been a refuge.

Oh and you might never have guessed this, but I like cookies. My first word was cookie, (Well go-kie, but close.)

Plus I have this weird fat cell lipodema aspect to my LE, I actually have very little fluid, just weird swollen fat cells.

Good lord even the font on that sentence swelled.

I know it's no guarantee...but what's the worst thing that can happen, I get thin? At least if I feel better about what clothes I fit into it might balance out the revulsion at wearing a sleeve.

So I am hungry. I'm not starving myself, I had salad and chicken kabob and a pita for dinner, but I am still hungry. Now that I am on AI's weight loss is harder than ever.

So there I am, I am putting it out there.

Oh did I mention I get crabby when I diet.

I am so hungry I could eat my avatar.

Part of the trick to loosing weight is not to be hungry.  My doc recommends massive amounts of veg, cooked and raw.  He says if you are hungry make sure you eat otherwise you will obsess over food which will lead you to eat anything.  I now eat veg till it feels like it comes out of my ears but my favourite thing is veg soup that is more veg than soup flavoured with some spices.  If I'm hungry a big mug of this and I'm good to go.  If you eat a salad, make sure you eat until you are satisfied and eat every two hours.  Sound a lot?  I agree....but my DD2 is a personal trainer with other qualifications and does diets as part of her service......her number one rule is never get hungry!! and by eating every two hours of the right things, you will never be tempted by the wrong as there is no hunger and that means the ol' metabolism will start to speed up....well in my case begin to move.   I'm also so on the AI's and stacked on a whole heap of weight and being 5'4" I started to look like an apple with limbs and a head so I have been following my DD2's advice for the last six months and have lost, with no exercise I might add, fifteen pounds.   Hope it helps.

    Love n hugs.  Chrissy

Weight Watchers has a new plan now and fruit is unlimited so maybe you could have a lot of fresh fruit on hand and when hunger strikes can just grab an apple or some grapes or an orange to fill you up.  Have you even heard of Vitamuffins ( or maybe it it VitaTops or VitaTop muffins)?....they are 100 cals or less and have lots of fiber and are great for satisfying the carb and sweet craving.  They used to be difficult to find, but now even Walmart carries them.  Good luck.  I HATE dieting and think it is very unfair that it is so difficult to take pounds off and so much fun to put them on.

It's not easy but sadly yes losing weight does help. Definitely. I say sadly because now there is no excuse for us, and definitely no comfort eating to deal with the discovery.

One thing that helped me was a photo taken from behind, about six months before diagnosis. We were going downstairs into Hezekiah's tunnel in Jerusalem so I had on some shorts to walk through the water in the tunnel, with a long skirt for decency and sun-protection in the outdoors at both ends, hitched up as we entrered the darkness and did the stairs, and the guy behind took this picture. He didn't mean to be cruel, he was just doing what tourists do, but it has to be the one picture you would pay your fotrune to destroy the negative....  It was on my fridge for quite a while so in my face every time i went for a nibble.

So instead of virtual chocolate brownies, I now send you virtual bowl of fruit. It doesn't sound the same, does it.

What's the worst when you get thin, the wrinkles aren't all nicely filled out: eat too many prunes and you get to look like one. Maybe go for peaches, they are soft and furry. Everyone loves peaches. They make great smoothies if you whizz up a cheap tin of peach slices with whatever fruit looks a bit.. yesterday-ish eg a past-it's-best banana or the non-bruised sides of the last two plums in the basket. But keep an eye on your stamina, for me that's the best guage of getting too thin.

And get out of the house and walk. Like with a toddler that's driving you mad, sometimes you just need to get out. You would never finish the whole pack of biscuits in public, would you. In fact just don't buy biscuits. If a kind visitor brings some, put them in a tin and use them on the next kind visitor!

Cookiegal - try loseit.com - since I've started using that website in January, faithfully entering every bite I eat and every time I exercise, I've lost 10 pounds.  It made me realize I'd gotten into a habit of small snacking - stuff around 60-80 calories a pop, cuz "those small amounts really can't hurt."  After filling in all those "small amounts" on loseit.com, it made me realize how many stupid calories I was eating. I had been trying for over 2 years to lose my 20+ chemo pounds, but until I started with loseit.com I'd been unsuccessful.  Check out loseit.com - it tracks calories in and calories out, tells you how much over or under your daily calorie goal you are, and even tells you the date that you will reach your weight loss goals!  And it has some great graphs to track your eating, exercise, and weight over time.

There's a group of us on the Fitness thread who post our daily exercise - the thread is called (duh) Let's Post Our Daily Exercise.  Whether it's a 10 minute walk around the block or a 5 mile run, or anything inbetween, we post it.  We're all in the same boat trying to lose weight and we all support each other.  It's a fun group and we all encourage each other to get our butts out there and MOVE!

We also have a thread called "Wednesday Weigh In" - don't worry, we don't post our weights, but we do post how much we've gained or lost since the previous week.  It's amazing how the prospect of posting each Wednesday keeps you in line!

Agreed about the AIs fighting us every inch of the way when we try to lose weight.  As I always gripe to my oncologist, being overweight increases the risk of recurrance, and yet they give us a drug that causes weight gain.  NOT FAIR!!!!Yell

    I second that NatsFan!

I use livestrong.com, although I am sure there are other sites out there that are just as great for tracking food and exercise. The key, for me, is to track every single thing you eat or drink, even if you think it doesn't have any calories. On livestrong.com it will break down the nutritional info for you, and show how much fat, sodium, carbs and protein you consumed and how much over your recommended amount. I also track fitness, everything I do during the day...

I must tell you, when I first started my weight didn't budge for six whole weeks although I walked 4 miles every single day and restricted my daily food intake... It took a lot of persistence from me, but now I am steadily loosing 2 pounds a week.  Do NOT get discouraged. Don't deny yourself any food that you like either, because you will come to resent whatever regime you're on.

I ate half a cake on Sunday, LOL. I don't recommend it, but I made up for the excess sugar, fat and calories because I was tracking everything I ate, including the cake, so I know how much I overate.  Good luck, you can do it, just make sure you devise a long term plan that is comfortable for you :)

My typical food plan has always been the 80/20 diet - be good 80% of the time but 20% of the time it's all for me to do what I want. It stopped working about a year or so ago (when I started Tamox).  I did Weight Watchers but that didn't work for me.....so just recently I tried South Beach and I can honestly tell you, it's fun because I'm trying different recipes; I don't have to weigh and measure everything; nor do I have to write down everything I eat. PLUS, I'm losing weight. And, I'm NOT hungry. As a matter of fact, I got my DH to do it with me and he's asked me to stop giving him so much to eat!  I got the book and accompanying cookbooks from my library and found them great. I sit around and read and plan. I'm even making new things that I never thought I'd try. So far, all is good. The mashed cauliflower is awesome. No need to be hungry.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've done well with weight watchers in the past. Actually just cutting down sugar and fat and carbs works pretty well too.

The hard part is that the AI's increase appetite. I can tell, I went through this with one of the pain meds too. So I am just gonna have to tolerate a bit of hunger at the end of the day.

    Thanks for the support!!

@JW9 Good suggestion on the cauliflower mash. One of my favorite restaurants makes cauliflower dijonaise!

I swear by South Beach - over the years when my weight gets out of control I just go on the beginner's part for a few weeks and I lose the excess weight - the first time I went on it years ago I lost 70 lbs. and was NEVER hungry - I learned so much from the diet - such as I am hugely "allergic" to carbs - if I eat them I blow up like a puff ball and start having problems retaining fluid - I still eat carbs 8 years later but mostly I eat whole grain everything except pasta which (when I have it) I undercook.  It saw me through chemo weight gain, AI weight gain and depression weight gain.  I also now eat some foods I would never have bothered trying.

Good Luck - I hate that you're hungry.

I  LOVE Edy's no sugar added fruit bars....they are only 25 calories and wonderful in this hot weather.  Problem is I can eat an entire box of them, but guess it is better than eating half a cake.  Sorry mks16, but I laughed outloud when I read that as I have done the same thing before....also with pies....just a sliver at a time, but the next thing you know, Wow, did I eat all that!?!!?!  Today I ate almost half a watermelon....am taking this unlimited fruit to heart.

thanks for all the tips. I had a big piece of chicken tonight...it was a gift...so i am doing much better. I hate the nightime munchies, but I also know that anytime I lose weight I have to deal with some night time hunger. During the day I'm fine.

Lyrica....OMG I was so crazy hungry during Lyrica. I would eat a whole big meal and want to eat an hour later. That's kind of what the AI's are like, but milder.

Shopping helps...just trying on stuff and remember there are other pleasures besides food.

I love shopping for clothes after I have lost weight....do not have much fun doing it at all when I am still unable to zip the zipper on the size I think I should be.   Popcorn is a good low cal snack.  Jiffy pop makes one that is WW approved, says so on the pkg.  I like the white popcorn the best and that is one of the few times I think I need to drink pop....I just think I need it when I have popcorn.  A carton of diet soda lasts forever when I have it, but I need it with popcorn.

Tonight I had a pretty vegetarian meal....sauteed zucchini in olive oil with celery, onion, garlic and a little Parmesan cheese also had some brown rice with mushrooms.  Water melon for dessert.   And after talking about it think am going to have some popcorn tonight.   Have you tried those microwave poppers that don't need oil....you can get them at Bed Bath &Beyond and they are great.

cookiegal, the thing that keeps me away from night time snacking is brushing my teeth soon after I finish dinner.  (This might only work if you are too lazy to feel like brushing again later, but I may as well let my laziness work for me!)

Ladies:)  I am also overweight, trying to lose it during rads, going on Arimidex in a week or so.  I am worried that the Arimidex will mess me up, but I have lost 5 pounds since right before my lumpectomy.  Slow weight loss works for me, with three reasonable meals a day plus two or three snacks, like berries, maybe some frozen yogurt, or almonds are good.  Eating before you get hungry is important.  I had been on Nutrisystem for many months, plus I had been a counselor for Nutrisystem, I know how hard it is, we all have our own personal issues with food.  Now, we all have a common reason to lose it...we don't want recurrence!!!  I do have a question to all of you..Does anyone know of a site that has diet suggestions expressly for breast cancer survivors?  Oh, Cookiegal, I can relate;)

That dinner sounds great. I love parm on veggies. The best thing I made this year was roasting onions with garlic olive oil and parm...works great with grape tomatoes.

I have a strange relationship with popcorn...I don't get full from it so I just keep eating!

Have a great weekend all y'all

Popcorn is mostly all air: count the kernels and then look at that many kernels of sweet corn; it's nothing!

GROAN!   This has been a bad day from the very start....had my banana so I could take my pills in the AM, BUT made a stop at McDonald's on the way to work and got a sausage biscuit.   Then tonight I was starving so told husband Sure, I will go when he asked if I wanted to go somewhere and get something to eat....normally I always say no, I will fix something here, but I had been thinking about a baked potato for some reason.  So he asks Where ? and I said Golden Corral so you know what that means.  I am afraid I did justice to the buffet....did not get any desserts because there were too many other good things to eat,,and I did get my potato.   Ah well, tomorrow is another day.   WW won't be held on Monday because of the holiday so I will have a week to be good before going for weigh in.

Cookiegal....you are obviously suffering from potato deprivation.  I roast them and go for interesting, colors, shapes, and flavors.

Also, can you find some local strawberries at NYC farmers markets???   No, not cookies, but very satisfying.

I don't know how you balance this, but the minute I start to get anywhere near sensory deprivation, I eat.  Fortunately, I am able to work most of this off.

Finally, I can't live w/o the occasional indulgence.  There is a fab Norwegian bakery a few blocks away.  Plus a number of good French ones in the area.  Plus, plus, plus.......

A long time ago, I learned that I was much better off treating myself at the getgo.  Otherwise, I eat everything in sight, THEN treat myself.

What I try not to do is bake anything for only me.  Because yes, I really can eat the whole thing.

Good luck.  I think if you focus on the wonderful in-season produce and foods, it will help a lot.

    Enjoy the weekend. - Claire

Strawberries are  in!  I mix a little Splenda in some really good balsamic vinegar and pour over the strawberries.  Fantastic!  Some people actually mix in sugar instead of Splenda.  I lost 106 lbs with WW five years ago.  Unfortunately I have gained some of it back.  Back to WW I have been!  Plus back to more exercise.  I cannot lose just dieting only.  I have to exercise too.  Luckily in the 90+ heat I have an elliptical and treadmill at home.  (I also  have LE so the heat gets to me).

i hope i don't sound like a bad record but avoiding carbs is a way to lose weight easily especially coupled with exercise.

as Mr. Lee (kung fu teacher) says  (and he is kind of wrong) there are plenty of carbs in vegetables.  just eat meat and veggies.. fruit only sometimes.  When I get heavy that's what I do.

Actually, you don't sound that heavy.. i like people to be substantial  - to show they enjoy life. life is too short to worry about weight.  they may come a time when you won't be able to eat.

    @ BeckySharp.....

That is exactly what I am making tonight.

I do use the real sugar, I get a tummy ache from splenda, but a teaspoon of sugar is not that big a deal and everybody loves that dessert!

@apple.....no I'm not that heavy. I am just hoping that losing weight will help my lymphedema!

I topped out in Jan @ 210, so I cut out corn syrups, diet sweetners, bread and fast food. I also looked for jobs where I would not be sitting at a desk all day. My job keeps me running. I do small meals every 2 hrs, if I want bread it has to be 35 cal a slice and whole grain. It is working- weekends I eat what I want and after 3 months I was happy with fruit or 100% fruit juice(no sugar) for a snack. My downfall is cookies and pie, but so I try to do custards and fruit/high fiber cookies. I weighed in  this week @ 175 just 40 more to go. My job wears me out and I am too busy to eat exept on breaks. One of my really bad habits was fast food eaten in the car going to work, eating all day at my desk and fast food on way home. I have tried all the diets and 2 wks later I am off the wagon! I do not seem to gain with regular sugar in smaller amounts, so the corn syrup and nondiet sweetners were helping me gain.

Ruthbru...thanks for the encouragement, not to gain with the Arimidex.  Sometimes drugs just play a mind game with me.  I am not obese, but overweight, and I think that has a lot to do with the general health and fighting off disease.  I now, with BC, have a huge reason to control my weight.

About sugar and sugar substitutes, I had been a big fan of Splenda, then with BC, I decided, maybe I was consuming too much, on fruit an in coffee drinks, etc.  Now, I changed to real sugar with max of two teaspoons a day. Any comments on Splenda? anyone?

good luck with your diet.  I am in the process of trying to come off of Lyrica.  I too found I am always hungry but I can go a long time without eating which is my problem. Then I don't want to stop once I start.

I do not believe sugar substitutes are good for you.  I got nauseated as soon as I swallow the stuff.  I know if I would give up my Mt. Dew I would loose a lot of weight right off the bat....However it is my coffee.  I need that caffeine to get through the day with my ADHD 8 year old.  It's that are some chocolate.  lol

Anyone know if we ER+ should eliminate soy?  I have heard of some connection...

BTW: My RO said best not to drink green tea while doing rads. Something about antioxidents working against the rad treatment.  Any comments on this?
