I'm so excited, taking my passport papers in today and getting my picture taken.  I think it only takes a couple of weeks to get your passport card back.  Yippee!

Well I had a creepy experience a while ago.  Somebody knocking at the door ... I didn't answer cause I'm not a morning person and not dressed yet.  We don't get people at the door except for delivery folks so I figured they would leave a package and go away.  Nope ... more knocking.  Then I see a guy in my back yard ... eek.  I go to front door and he's coming back around to the front.  I had the door cracked and hollered at him.  He jumped a foot ... good ... serves him right.  I told him he had no business in my back yard and got a song and dance about how he was looking for (name) and didn't realize it was not the right house until he got to the back.  Many apologizies.  So we play like I believe that and he goes on his way.  What I think ... he was casing the place. 

I'm glad I have the dogs ... who were more than willing to make an appearance.  Jake even barked his head off .... good doggie.  Daisy is quiet but big and looks like a shepherd.  This idiot however ignored a 'Beware of Dog' sign and a hook thingy on my gate and just walked right into the yard.   It's times like this that I miss my Gypsy dog though  ... she was all shepherd and would have been snarling and growling enough to make him wet his pants

Anyway ... so now here I sit playing on the computer.  I don't think I'm going to get in the shower and get dressed until DH gets home. 

That is REALLY scary Whiterabbit! Your gutsy for having opened the door...even a crack.

I live in a small town and I would call the police (not the 911#) and ask them to do some drive bys. They do that sort of thing around here all the time. They would probably ask for a description and might possibly know who it is if he's one of their regulars!

I also have a locked storm door.  And the dogs were by my side.  Otherwise I would not have opened the door even a crack.

All is well ... the guy was actually shaking after I startled him.  He also did not appear to be a druggie.   I honestly didn't dare not let him know somebody was home.  With some of them that just makes them feel it's safe to break in. 

Edited to add:  We are on a private lane off a main road.  I saw his car drive in and I also saw it drive back out afterwards.  Maybe he was just an idiot looking for his friend ... who knows?   

I'm leaning towards what Barbara would do.  All you have to do is cock a shotgun and it sends fear into anyone trying to break in.  The dogs and a good shotgun are the best home defense.  My small caliber pistol isn't that great for home defense, but my barking dogs and shotgun work out very well.

I think you were very brave Rabbit.  I'm proud of you!

gracie ... My current dogs are also very very friendly.  We try to make it appear that they are trained ... I kept a hand on Daisy to make it look like I was restraining her.  And I did notice today that the hair on her back was standing up ... she did pick up that I was spooked.  There is shepherd in there ... don't know if it would come out in a pinch or not.

The ones that case a place first are looking for the easy targets ... hopefully if that is what it was we have convinced him it might be best to look elsewhere.

Rabbit .. I think if that guy had tried to come in, Daisy would have been on him instantly!  She's got enough shepherd in her to be very protective.

Gracie .. you're so funny .. my Winston is short and he would (and has) bitten people in the calf.  So if he could get up from his nap, he might be helpful with an intruder.

Barbara .. you're on the money about the sound of 'lock and load' even though my shotgun is only a .410, it still makes a big noise.

We're looking for another dog to add to our family......any suggestions for a nice gentle breed? It's always nice to get info from real people instead of dog books. Don't mention beagle, been there, done that. It could have been raining pitchforks and he wouldn't raise his head of the floor.

Oh, and it has to be REALLY easy to train.

.....and a really loud household.

You know the truth is that it all depends on the individual dog.  I'm a fan of going through a good rescue group and finding a mixed breed.  They tend to know the temperament of their dogs and can help you find a good fit.

Or do what we seem to be good at ... just wait for one to wander in and make itself at home

Do you want a watchdog type ... who will at least bark?
