oophorectomy- Super MO
Hi All,
Went to a super oncologit today to discuss my situation: Stage 1, grade 1, oncotype 1- taking tamoxefen 10 mg. To my suprise MO indicated that many others have the symptoms I have which include: short term memory issues, not thinking fast enough, along with all our usual issues.
MO's response was 10 mg has not been studied so effectiveness is unknown so here are my 3 choices:
take nothing risk is 4% with tami and would be 8 % with out
take the 20 mg and hope you get used to it
or take the ovaries out and would have choice to do nothing or additional medication.
due to recentness of my surgery ( 5months today) 6 months to think ... is reasonable
So smart ladies-
anyone opted for oophorectomy and how challenging was that?
if you did opt for it did the tami symptoms go away?
thanks
Chocolate
ps- I am 50 and not anywhere near menopause yet

Hi Chocolate,
I had an ooph last October, when I was 39 years old. I really have not had any problems. I am on Femara now, and I am doing very good on that. No regrets!
Take care,

Hi again,
Surgery was laproscopic. I had a complete hysterectomy at the same time as the ooph. I took a month off work, but was out walking 5-6 miles a day within a week. I felt very good after surgery except I was very tired for about 4-6 weeks. I feel healthier than ever now.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Take care,

I had salphyngo-oophorectomy two months ago. I was 43, no regrets. Not taking AI's yet.

Hey thanks for the replies.
Nikola, what is the advantage of having salphyno as opposed to only the ovaries?
How long to recover.
Are you planning on taking ai's or do they think you have done enough ( I know we have all done enough)
thanks

Hi Chocolate,
I only needed my ovaries out, but my obgyn said she would take it all out as prevention because of BC. I talked with my onc and she agreed that because of my age, and I was not having any more children that I might as well take it all. No regrets. The remaining part still works.
I was very nervous to take Al's, but I just needed to everything possible.

Hi Chocolate,
I took my tubes out as my surgeon told me it would be easier for them and that way they would be sure all ovaries were out. I did it laparascopically, surgery was at 1pm and I was home at 5pm. By 11pm I was fine. Between 5 and 11 I was nauseated and sleepy. Within three days I was up walking normally. They told me to go easy first 2 weeks and after that to go with how I feel. No regrets so far.
I got prescription for AI (Femara) from my onc but he also told me after all that I did (double mastectomy, chemo and oophorectomy) my benefits from Femara would be up to 10% as opposed to 40-50% with exercise and diet alone. That would be 10% from 8% risk I ended up after all the other Tx. He said it was up to me if I would start with Femara.
So far I did not.

hi All,
So I returned to my regular sweet MO today to review the findings from Super MO in the big city.
Well my regular MO does not want me to: take nothing, continue to be miserable on tami or not try everything first before an oophorectomy.
So I was prescribed toremifene and it actually had to ordered at the pharmacy and I get a weeks break. So this will be the plan.
thanks
Chocolate
ps- its amazing what we go through- hang in All
