the report function should be used to get rid of sales span and porn ... period!

All these people who delete each other and complain about it abuse the system...as if we didn't know what was going on.  it' the same 'ol same 'ol, group.

    get a life already

ok I don't post very often and only pop in from time to time. I have followed a bit of what is going on.  I  just don't understand how people have the time to waste on petty behaviour. I think there should be accountability ie: reporters should be identified. What have they got to hide?

Jane .. I think that's a good idea, either that or do away with the 'report' function altogether.

retaliation usually follows provocation. I sense that the misuse of the report feature recently is a result of people feeling bullied, and feeling they have no other resource but to report, in an attempt to expose threats or ridicule, it seems to me the action of those who feel in a minority.

personally, i have reported only spam, as far back as i can remember anyway.

if individual experience and beliefs are respected and responded to accordingly, i would imagine abuse of this feature would cease.

i like the idea of a like/dislike button.

I love the idea of a like button, and maybe a sympathy button or other support buttons, but imagine if you had something to say and several people "disliked" it...  I'd be shattered.  Please, no negative buttons.

Thats-life, I agree that some of the reporting happens when people feel outnumbered and we need to respect people's beliefs.  Unfortunately I've been flamed for silly reasons, but so far never reported, but I feel reluctant to post lately in case I'm flamed again by one of the women who've taken a dislike to me.  I have some views that are not in agreement with conventional medicine but would never impose them on others or insult others intentionally. Yet those who flamed me were alt ladies!  I do my best to be respectful but I can't stop others from being hurtful.

Thanks for all your feedback everyone. We have made and will continue to make changes to the "report this post" function. We sincerely appreciate you all working together to maintain a supportive and respectful climate.

    Best,

    Your Mods

Some of the best ideas for how to manage the report button are on this very thread, several pages back.

I'd prefer to have some sort of anonymous reporting method, but the decision to delete a post or ban a member should not depend on the whims of vulnerable and sometimes angry members.  I'd prefer to have moderators decide but realise that would be expensive.  Alternatively it should need a lot more than five reports to delete a message unless it's spam. On the other hand that leaves minorities vulnerable to abuse as there would not be enough people willing to report obvious abuse when it's a popular person or subject.  When reporters were named I felt that could cause more retaliation and bad feelings so was unworkable.

I'm thankful to the moderators that our concerns are being taken seriously.

I stopped posting a long time ago but popped on just to check out how elizabeth (konakat) was doing.  tragically, she is now with the angels.

I stopped posting because of a specific small group of didactic bullies.

Yay - exactly the same people are in this thread!

    what a pity.

London .. I had to look up the word 'didactic.'  Now I understand what you're talking about.

Apple .. Maybe if the feature said "report this spam" instead of "report this post" it would cut down on unnecessary reporting.

RE reporting: Spam cures, i believe, are of concern and should be
our focus more so than policing personal opinions of members.

RE :"sock puppets".. moderators say they are now able to identify them, hopefully there will be change in the future, and one id only for members.

RE apple: ive lost touch with who is fighting for sock puppet rights? and with who is a sock puppet...puppets/pilot fish/...what a waste of energy and time for all...and the member tv, i actually felt sorry for her, as much as i did for yan that day...every one was emotional i think, there was so much shock and sadness running through the board.

I'd like to know who has the authority to determine "spam". One person's spam might be another's lifeline. I don't like thinking that someone's presumable "snake-oil" could benefit those who are out of options.

ETA: penis enlargement vs. controversial medicine are two different things.

fair enough point gracie...i thought spam was a new member 'selling' a product...like the vitamin C private message that was going around, and also 3 posts for that treatment in the alt forum. they asked for $100.00?...i think the moderators decide what is spam?, after receiving reports on pms and posts.

I hope it's the moderators, but  I've read a few posts about controversial or alternative treatments that showed up later as "removed by the community" and I can only assume with all the mods have to go through, stuff like that would not be a priority or they simply don't want it on their site and it's never re-instated. Any one person can push that button five times, I think. Can't say I blame anybody, but personally, I want to hear about every little thing out there, no matter how quacky it sounds. We're big girls, we can do our own research and it bothers me somehow that we're not given the option to do so...sometimes... based on someone else's intuition or feeling. I do hear what your saying thats-life, and I think we're on the same page about spam, but sometimes I think the term is viewed pretty loosely.

I consider spam the tons of posts about nikes, purses, etc. I've never really seen anything I consider spam that was a so called "cure". There was someone on the other day who posted in 4 or 5 forums about a friend who had been cured of some kind of cancer using alternative methods. I think there was a link to a web site. Those posts were removed by the community, but when that happens if the mods think the post was legit they'll reinstate it.

Allison .. I consider that spam too, as well as links on posts to promote someone's own website selling something or selling a cure.

I don't consider posts I don't like to be spam .. just a difference of opinion.  But some folks do like to report posts that have a differing opinion than theirs.

Nancy  ... it's okay, the mods know who is hitting the 'report' key and they are on top of it.  It still sucks to get reported though.  You're in good company here.

SusanK8 - Please refrain from telling me or anyone else what to do. It is getting really old and I, for one, do not appreciate your advice. I am an adult and can make my own decisions, so please back off.
