Low Body Temperature anyone?

sukie: It's important to eat protein and a little bit of fat. Instead of just an apple try an apple with some almond butter or your blood sugar will spike and crash. I found that eating once every 2 hours is fine but I have to be careful that I don't cause a sugar rush--your temp will just peak and crash. I worked nights for 15 years, I have had more then 10 surgeries wher I needed general anesthesia, I had a car accident that damaged my neck--all of these contributed to my situation right now. The part of your brain that controls your body temp is the size of a grain of rice! You may sweat alot before you are able to maintain at 98.6.
-
So today hasn't gone as well as yesterday so far. First I didn't sleep well and woke up freezing cold even though I was dressed well and well covered. I added a blanket and stayed in bed an extra hour until I warmed up. I had a slice of whole grain bread and peanut butter first but that only brought me up to 97.7 and sure enough an hour later 97.3. It's taken me all day but I just reached 98.2. I'm getting the tired feeling again and I'm sweating. This is good because I can tell when I'm running at a higher temp. I start to feel cold if I'm below 97.1.The colder I am the lower my temp. I think I really need to get my schedule a little more regulated. Tomorrow I'll have the sausage and eggs again. That seemed to get me up there initially and I'll try and snack on veggies and nuts between meals. I still think that I will come up with a combo that works if I keep at it. Right now anything in the 98 range would be good. I have chemo again this week so maintaining this for 2 weeks will be unlikely but I'd like to get an idea of what works and what doesn't so I can put my full efforts into this as soon as I'm done.
MBJ. I totally agree that years of bad scheduling, surgeries etc... caused this low temp. If we can break it we can fix it. Just gotta figure out how!
-
Suki: I wouldn't even try this undergoing chemo. Try a strong cup of coffee, then a meal. It has to have some fat to get your body heat going, then bump it further by jumping in a hot shower. Then try to maintain that temp as long as you can. Just the slightest breeze can sabotage it while retraining your body to operate at a higher temp. You will need a hot room or if you live where it's hot, going out in the sun really helps.

I just added this link above regarding the link between cancer and low body temps: http://hansacenter.com/pdfs/Cancer_and_Low_Body_Temperature_01-10-2010.pdf

Also added above: Diseases related to low body temp: Cancer, Lyme disease, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, diabetes, and heart disease

I'm working on keeping my temp up, but in Orlando, its freaking hot!!! and uncomfortable. I'm trying to keep my ac a little higher, but I tend to wander around in tank tops and shorts and that's all. I go outside and sit in the sun frequently and meditate...enjoying the feeling of being warm.
Question: a lot of time I go to bed, and I am shivering! I pull the comforter up and can't get to sleep until I get 'warm'. I have a hard time getting to sleep. Shouldn't the low temp at bedtime help me get to sleep? Ugh, body soooooo confused! I ordered the adrenal supplements online and got a B12 shot, so I"ll keep you posted on improvements!
-
ruth: I tend to freeze at night no matter how many covers I have on and then sometimes I bake because of too many covers. I am all over the place with my temp.
-
I want you to know I am sitting here with sweat pouring out of my (newly relocated) armpits and my 2 magic sweat spouts under my foobs in an effort to 'warm up'. I just came back from a very very short walk and was 99* !
I was 97.7 after breakfast and didn't feel good, so ate an apple/peanut butter and it went up to 98.3, but then dropped to 97.7 again.
My ac is warmer (ick) and I have an extra shirt and sox downstairs. I used a heating pad on my achy spots to warm my body before bed.....I'm just tired of nursing this broken body, but hey, giving it another shot. Or I should say, my last shot~ Just took temp and I"m 98.6, woo hoo. Am I winning the race?

tnbcRuth: This is what I posted on the bodytemp.eu board today:
So my thoughts are that until I fix my adrenal disfunction I am not going to be able to reset my body temp.
Yesterday was horrible--could barely hold my temp and last night I did an experiment and just noted what happenedz: My temp goes up around 9 pm to 98.3 and stays high until maybe 3-4 am which is when I wake up freezing because I am soaked. Last night instead of throwing all of the covers on I slept with just a sheet and slept a little hot all night and then around 4 am woke up freezing and covered myself. Core temp on waking 96.9 F. Got up to 98.3 with food and coffee but couldn't maintain it at all today and hanging around at 97-97.6F which is where I seem to want to be when awake. This is very typical of adrenal fatigue: wide awake at night and unable to sleep and slow moving and unable to do anything during the day. This dr. says you can't do a reset without first fixing the adrenals and I am beginning to think he is right:
http://www.drrind.com/therapies/adrenal-support-recommendation-sheetAnd then I posted this: 1 PM: So in frustration, about an hour ago I took a bunch of my adrenal support supplements and all of a sudden, while sitting in front of the heater, overdressed and then some, my temp went from riding aroudn 98.6 to 99.4. Finally had to turn off the heat and it seems to be staying. Coincidence? Maybe, but I am just glad this is what is finally happening today. I do recall this happening last time I tried to reset: my temp cam up on the fourth day late in the afternoon and then all day the next. Crossing my fingers that we can get through the next few days and my temp starts coming up more willingly.
So it's an uphill battle right now. When at 98.6 your temps should be more stable but at the lower temps there seems so be the whole sweat issue. Maybe it's the chemo? -
So it's now 3 pm and my temp crashed. Kept it at 98.6 without doing anything but dressing slightly warm for 2 hours but now I have to bundle up again and get some heat on myself. My darned thumbs let me know when my temp crashes because all of a sudden they lock in hard and I hurt myself.

That is a lot of info from Dr. Rind. I've received my Dr. James Wilsons' Adrenal Rebuilder and waiting for the Phosphatidylserine caps. My pcp recommended and its simple. Take 'em, feel better! haha, I hope !!!!!!!!!!! Someone mentioned Lodine that's taken for Plantar Fascitis that many of us have symptoms of with foot neuropathy...guessing it works on tendons or ligaments. Maybe it would work for your thumb too?
-
This is such a great post. I tracked my morning urine for a month, and my temp was always in the 95-96 range, without the rise in the middle, as you would expect from a monthly cycle. I have started to take my temp with an oral thermometer, and right now (10am) after a cup of hot coffee, it's 97.5. I am usually cold, but also suffer dreadfully from Plantar Fascitis. I am now developing PF in my "good" foot, and have read that having it on both feet sometimes indicates underlying disease state???
Anyway, I did not do chemo, but did 6.5 weeks of rads. I have no idea what my temp was running at previously, but managed to have 3 children successfully (no problems conceiving) in my 30s, so I presume that my body temperature was following a typical monthly pattern back then??
Thanks for sharing the info on "resetting". I would like to give that a try.
-
Hi Marianna: I am sorry you are starting to suffer in your other foot. I would read the links above as they are quite informative. My foot, hip, hands don't hurt when I get my temp up.
For those who want to reset: It's best to work with the moderator on bodytemp.eu so he can get a full medical history on you to better assist a reset.
tnbcRuth: I have never heard of Lodine but I am doing the reset in hopes of eliminating most of the pills I am taking and since my foot doesn't bother me except when my body temp is really low, taking pills would just cover the fact that I am low. I use the pain in my hands, hip & foot to indicate that I am low temp.
-
Well, my reset isn't going well at all and I am now seriously thinking that correcting the adrenals may be in order before my temp can be reset:

Just an update: I feel a tiny bit better after taking the 2 supplements. Temp steady at 97.7. I'm only going to do temp 2-3 times a day and see if it starts an upswing. Feet hurt a tiny bit less, whole body aches a tiny bit less and calves not on fire, just achy. Ohhh, wouldn't it be lovely if this worked!!! I agree MBJ, you have to get to the root...our bone marrow was poisoned, and is the source of WBC, RBC and platelets...all of which regulate our system.
-
tnbcRuth: I am so glad the medications seem to be working. What did they give you?
-
Dr. James Wilsons' Adrenal Rebuilder and the Phosphatidylserine caps. Definitely less foot neuropathy and leg pain and overall achyness. But placebos have good results too haha...will see how tomorrow and the next day goes. I get to have another B12 shot tomorrow! I"'ll get a LOT done this weekend!
-
This is all fascinating..I had never heard about the low temp issue. I always remember having a low temp but it was brought to the forefront now that Im in a clinical trial my vitals are closely monitored and put in a spreadsheet comparing each time. My temp over the past 6 weeks has never gone above 97.6!!!
-
I really hope this works for you Ruth!
Hi Geewhiz: Great name! What trial are you in? It's next to impossible to even try getting your temp up while undergoing chemo.
Interesting info: http://www.mall-net.com/mcs/coldbody.html#Lowered

BTW, I took the full dose of both meds yesterday and I had diarrhea to the point I had to take an Immodium to stop. (I did lost almost a pound, lol) (not reporting it to 10lb takeoff!!) I am sensitive to most meds, so will build up a little slower. Wish I knew which one did it. Anyway, just wanted to report the tummy issues. Neuropathy decreased and burning calves gone! overall less acheness and temp is holding at 98 !
Haven't had my B12 shot yet
Have to wait for my neighbor to come home~
How is everyone else doing? Happy 4th.
-
tnbcRuth: Yuck! There is a list of supplements they recommend for adrenal fatigue on www.drlam.com and he recommends building slowly until you get to that point then ease back one. Sorry you are going through this! Be sure to drink lots of water to compensate for the dehydration.
Dr. Lam also recommends a very set schedule when it comes to sleep time and waking up (8:30-9 am wakeup 10 pm sleep) and also no computer of TV after 8pm to help retrain your circadian rhythm.
Happy Fourth!!! Hugs!
-
Hi MBJ,
I'm on the neratinib trial for her2. But, after a week on it...no side effects. Over 85% on the real deal get diarrhea. Starting to think I got the placebo.
I think my temp must have gotten a workout today. Its 95 here, and I played a 2 hour tennis match in the blazing sun. Wow!! -
Geewhiz: I guess that's the problem with trials, you may have gotten the placebo. 95 out and playing tennis! I would be drenched! It has been lovely and in the 80's here. Where are you?
-
Hotlanta, GA!
I might have spoken too soon, I'm about 6 days into the trial, and woke up this morning with crampy stomach. Yay!! As crazy as that sounds!!
I love CA, San Diego is probably the most gorgeous place I have ever visited in the US. Love to live there!
I am not going to tackle a temp reset right now, but it makes sense. I try to keep pursuing treatments, but not so that it interferes drastically with living. Right now, I think I have my hands full with the trial...and still deciding on reconstruction, round 2... With more grafting from Khouri. -
GeeWhiz: I am glad that you didn't get the placebo and I really hope this works for you! Once you are all done and healed and feeling healthy, then you can address other things. Hugs!!!

I started taking Armour again in desperation 3 days ago
and last night was the first night I wasn't swimming in sweat. My
body was relieved, I finally slept and I just need thyroid meds even
though it's only one grain. I realize I don't present as low thyroid
but I think chemo damaged it somehow, along with the adrenals. Once I
went back on ALL my supports for adrenal AND thyroid, the profuse sweating symptoms
went away, my temp finally came up yesterday for a good long time and I
think I have to approach things differently then I originally
thought. The ultimate goal is no meds, however, in my case the
meds work. I am going to continue in the efforts to keep my temp up
because I am not out of the woods on this yet but I am going to need
to take the Armour to do so.I guess I will just have to chalk this up to one hellish experience in
the limitations of my body and work with what is working instead of
with what is NOT working.I charted my temps yesterday and they were night and day higher then
without the Armour. I did seem to hover between 98.3-98.7 with long
stretches at 98.6 and I only dropped a bit when I didn't get food in
fast enough, the difference is I didn't crash and burn-my temp
recovered. Also, it still went up late last night--98.6-so i turned
on the fan and didn't put the covers on until I felt a chill. Woke up
at a fairly normal temp of 97.6 F this morning so this is good. -
This is so crazy but I saw my accupuncturist 2 weeks ago and told her about being cold etc and so she treated me for this and since then I have not been cold once. So strange.
-
Sanbar: That's fantastic! Maybe all of our treatments cause our bodies to "disconnect" so it's worth being treated for it. I might just go check that out!
-
Sanbar: Have you actually taken your temp to see what it is raised to? Just curious as I am thinking of trying this.
-
Tried acupuncture yesterday and today...98.6 F !!!
