CONGRATULATIONS to everyone is finishing this week!!!! My doc wants me to take tomorrow off, but geez i just don't want to!!! I want to finish on the 28th like i have had circled on my calendar for 6 weeks now!!! i know its just adding one more day to next week, but does having one extra day off make that big of a difference??
AND if having that 3 days off makes a big difference in your skin...WHY is the treatment not four days a week??? makes more sense to me!!!
-
I did my last full breast, skin w/bolus, and super clav txs today!! Now just 5 boosts on a 2 x 4 inch patch and I'm done next Thurs....
-
ftblmom - I say enjoy the break and take the extra day! Finishing will feel just as good whenever you do it.
TonLee - Congratulations on moving on to boosts. It really is a milestone.
-
Carberry and Pixels: CONGRATULATIONS!! That's awesome!

GmaFoley: Great to hear you're feeling so much more confident in your ability to handle rads! Keep up the positive thoughts!

TonLee: Congrats on the end of whole breast sessions! Some healing can now begin!

28/30 and the machine only needed one restart today! Scratchers remain a bust; I have two more shots to get back the last $7 of my scratcher investment!

-
Hit a wall today. More blisters popping up. The area under my arm is raw. I asked tp see the RO first and confirmed that the newest blister is in the boost area. He agreed that I needed a 4 day weekend and will look at it again Monday to see how it looks. I've finished 28 regular and 2 boosts. I was hoping to get thru this without stopping, but its got me in tears today. I think having that bolus every day thru 26 sessions really intensified the reaction I'm getting now.
-
Completed #22 /28 regs today. Woo-wee my skin knows something is up now! My entire armpit is a lovely shade of fresh sunburn and feels like I've been using sand paper instead of aloe. 6 more regular treatments and then on to the 8 boosts which I'm told will target a completely different area. I'd love an extra day this weekend to recover. I'm a tad fearful of what tomorrow might bring at this point
I'm also noticing that my back directly behind the treatment area is peeling. Anyone else experiencing this?
Tammy -
Hope~ just a little more, a little longer. I felt just like you my last week of treatment and the women on this board got me through. There is feeling good after radiation.
Tammy~I burned through as well. The back wasn't as bad as the breast through. My underarm was like a fruit leather. The last week of rads it split open but felt better as the tightness went away when it opened. My RO gave me Renecare with lidocaine.
Congrats to everyone finishing! See you on the after rads threads!
-
Hey Ladies...................great your finishing,........................good luck in the next 2 weeks...........I found the fatigue set in after the last boost...............but the techs told me it would........nothing major, just not normal for me to be tired..............just take it easy.
-
I noticed a new person in the patient's waiting room today and she was telling us that she is 18, has 3 kids and has lung cancer. And no, she never smoked. She said that while pregnant with her last child, she started coughing up blood and that's how they found it. Incredible!
-
They radiated up near my clavicle and that got the worst of the sunburn and at the end my back shoulder started to itch and I could feel bumps back there, so it did go through to the other side.
Also during the last 2 days I have had a sore throat, not sure if related to rads, but cant think what else it could be.
Just when you think you cant do any more, or your skin cant do any more, it will all be done. Cried all the way home yesterday just from shear joy of being done. Got a diploma too!
Rohanna Such a sad story, hearing more and more of these lately UGG!
-
congrats carberry on finishing, rohanna, hope and prayers for that young lady and the wish she has a strong support system around her
-
Just had my 33rd rad treatment today! Starting Monday, I will be on my last week of treatments!! Yay me!!! It's a really good thing, cuz, I don't think my skin can handle anymore of this. My RO told me yesterday that my skin reaction is the worse he has ever seen. It's all red and swollen, with blisters and very painful. I can't take any more pain meds! I just can't! So atleast I am on the downhill slide!!
-
brenilea - Yay you!!! To have a doc admit your skin reaction is the worst he's seen is really saying something. Glad you're on the downhill side. Have a good rad-free week-end.
-
Omg. I had a total freak out on the substitute RO today.
Yesterday when I finished with all the other fields, the RO drew in where I get my boosts....told me how it will work, and that he wouldn't be in today, another RO would.
Ok. Good. Great.
Today I showed up, get on the table, the sub RO comes in and says, "Where's her bolus?"
I said, "Bolus? Dr. S never said anything about bolus (because he knew I'd have stuck with my decision to skip boosts). I don't want bolus."
He said, "We need it to treat the skin."
I said, "I know what it's used for. I just had 28 txs with it. I don't want anymore skin tx."
He said, "I won't treat you without it."
I said, "Well, ok" and started to get up.
He put his hand on my shoulder and said, "I can show you on paper why we use the bolus for all boosts. Your RO should have told you...we use it on everyone for boosts here."
I said, "Even over incisions?"
He said, "Yeah."
I didn't know they used bolus for ALL boosts....haven't heard that before...I say fine whatever...if you use it for everyone then he must have forgot to tell me.
So they point the arm of the machine at me and I see a block of metal at the end with a square cut in it where the beam comes through.
I said, "What kind of metal is that?"
He said it was 4 kinds....heated to whatever-degree-I-wasn't-listening...they made it last night for me.
I said, "Are you telling me radiation won't go through that?"
He said "That's right."
I said, "Well why the hell didn't someone make one of those to go over my throat to protect my thyroid?!? I was told "nothing" could keep the rads out."
He said, "I think you need to come in early Monday and talk to your RO."
The retelling doesn't do justice to the amount of tension in the room. There were 4 techs and the RO, and when I questioned him they all just looked like deer caught in the headlights....everyone was uncomfortable....I'm sure that RO will tell mine I'm a pain in the butt...
-
TonLee - Sorry you had to go through that, but glad you stuck to your guns. If I had a substitute RO who was doing something I didn't expect from what my "real" RO had explained, I would totally call them out.
Where I went, they have 2 treatment rooms and I was assigned to Room A and always had the same techs. One day I got there a little early and a tech from Room B came and said they'd do my treatments because they had time. I was convinced that they gave me someone else's radiation plan. But by then, it was over and done. When I shared my concerns with my husband, he was on my case that I need to call people out when they do something that doesn't seem right.
The next day I told the Room A techs my concerns and they assured me I had gotten my treatment. They told me about all the checks and balances during and even after treatment which confirmed that I had indeed gotten the correct treatment. I never went in early again though.
Honestly, I think the doctors know an educated patient is their best patient.
Monday should be fun!
-
Carberry and brenilea, YYAAAAAYYYY! I'm 19/36! Can't wait to finish!
OK, stupid question time. What is a bolus? I've never heard it mentioned at the onc's office. In fact, they've never mentioned boosts. What questions should I be asking the onc?
Hope everyone has a restful, healing weekend!!
-
TonLee: I agree with GabbyCal. If you aren't sure and things don't add up to what your "real" RO said, I would just wait for your RO... That would have freaked me out too!!!
I'm really grumpy today girls...I'm trying to stay positive, but after working today and going to rads, my breast and chest are killing me (very pink/red and rash)!! I am 19/28 so only 9 more to go - WooHoo...
Ok I will tell you what is going on because most of you are close to being done or done..... first the tendonitis in the right arm (doc admitted it was from where they are radiating)... now pain in my sternum....Doc puts me on aleve...I tell him I have trouble with anti-inflammatories...he says you need to take it, if your stomach starts bugging you, we will give you something for that....ohhhhhhh boy.... ok by this last monday my esophagus burns so much I can't even drink a diet coke (which is where i get my caffiene).. so he gives me pepcid - no relief.... so I see the doc yesterday (sub RO) she admits my sternum pain is from rads and I need to stay on the aleve...gives me prilosec and tells me that it takes 3 days to take effect so use tums in the meantime.... What's next....the domino effect is getting to me... soooo I really am having issues staying positive.....If one more person tells me how great I look - I will strip my shirt open and show them how I really feel... (that was supposed to be a funny but its not so funny right now)
I still hope everyone has an awesome weekend!!!
-
TonLee: You'll recall I thought the techs were discussing putting a bolus on me for boosts but they've not done anything like that (must've been someone else they were discussing). My tumor was deep...there's not been an attempt to treat my skin to speak of.
I, too, have the attachment with the custom cutout that shaped like my tumor. They use a different ray for boosts than they do for whole breast. The whole breast ray (don't know what else to call it lol) goes right through you (hence the back getting some level of burn, too) as well as the floor from what they told me. The boost ray is a different type that penetrates the skin and then dissipates as it hits the tumor site so it doesn't hit your internal organs (at least not in a way that would cause the damage the whole breast one can). So...based on that information that I separately got from two RO's at my center, the metal probably would not have protected your thyroid during the whole breast sessions.
Brenilea: Youza! That's an award I'm not feeling competitive to win! Hang in there!
GmaFoley: So sorry it's been rough...you're getting there!
Rohanna: I've not seen a bolus so someone else will need to define that one for you!
-
TonLee~so sorry for your pain in the butt sub RO. My RO never came in the treatment room, only once when the techs thought my back was getting burnt. I never had a bolus either, but I could feel the tension from your words. I hope you have been able to unwind tonight. So sorry.GraFoley~ I say take it off!!!!! I felt just like you too. Or when co-workers (one in particular who can't handle a hang nail) always says "you're gonna be just fine" I guess she's all knowing....
-
Tonlee - I started my boosts earlier this week after having 26 of 28 regular treatments with a bolus. I am not getting the bolus for the boosts......and I wouldn't let them near me with that bolus again, even if they tried. I am so crispy and blistered right now and I don't think I'd be this bad if not for that bolus. I'm especially burned in areas that it was snug to, like my collar bone and the side of my chest wear they taped it to me each day.
-
rohanna- You're not alone, I don't know what a bolus is either and until I joined here, I didn't know what a boost was either. Those words have never been mentioned in my sessions.
My skin has turned almost black now...but I'm hanging in there! There's a light at the end of the tunnel! I am ending my rad. treatments on my Mom's birthday, July 6th. I lost her 12 yrs. ago and she has been with me through all of this!
I will totally miss the wonderful people I have met through all of this, the people who take care of me and the people in the waiting room. But I will not miss, the burned skin, pain, and being totally wiped out!
-
i never heard of a bolus either!!
I decided to suck it up and went to radiaiton yesterday, i felt fine, there was a 89 year old lady there that is just having ten treatments, not breast, and they also told her to maybe take a day off, and she said no way!! I am finishing monday! I said i am right there with you!! Hell, she is twice my age and can do this!!! so...ONLY TWO MORE!!! i will finish tuesday!! WOO HOO
Here is a funny story for the day....a few weeks ago i was at a grad party for a friends daughter, i made a roaster full of these cheesy bacon potatoes that i make for everyones parties. Another friend who was there has twins graduating and their party is today. She asked me to make the potatoes. I said sure, i made them for her other two kids. woke up this morning to a phone call from her asking what time i am bringing the potatoes...I TOTALLY FORGOT!!!!!! about the party about the potatoes!!! I had to run to the store and get all the stuff. ugh, i am an idiot. I am blaming it on the radiation , because never ever ever would i have forgotten soemthing like this!!!!
oh well, at least i have something fun to do today (i mean have a few drinks later!!! LOL)
-
Is anyone else using emu oil? I am using aloe vera (from the plant) and emu oil. I am have done 19/28 (nine left - whoo hoo!) I am slightly tan/pink right now. I have not had the bolus, though, thank goodness. My heart goes out to all who are so burnt.
Anyway, I think the emu oil is magic, so I wanted to recommend it. I found out about it here on these boards. I think it will help heal burns. Have a good night! -
brenilea, July 6th will be your Independence Day! Yay! Blow up something! I still don't know if I'm getting a bolus. I'm going to ask Monday. No one has mentioned one to you? Maybe we're not getting one.
ftblmom3, I'm forgetting everything these days! I check myself before I leave the clinic to makes sure I put everything back on!
Does anyone know if we can use ice packs on the weekend?
-
rohanna: There is a wikipedia entry for bolus! Mine was a chest wall area tumor and I've not had a significant change to my breast shape, so I guess that's why no bolus for me.
Regarding your icing question, my understanding is no extreme temperatures during treatment, ice or hot. That said...I've not really felt any burning sensation. General skin tenderness and a sandpaperish feel under the arm for me but nothing where I was wishing for ice.
That said, I note the moisturizers (particularly the 100% aloe vera) were cooling when applied!

Hi girls:
Feeling a good bit down about rads these days.My skin is suffering quite a bit, and I have 4 more whole breast and 5 boost to go. I'm tired of driving up there.
Help me hang on...

-
slcst12 - I know exactly how you feel. At the point where you are now, I felt the end would never come. I'm guessing you've got the itchy rash. Which means you've got the Aquaphor grease going. All I can say is that as soon as I finished the whole breast and started on the boosts, my skin started to clear up. So it sounds like you'll have a milestone on Thursday with your last whole breast. That's a bigger deal than I thought it would be when I started. So, try counting down just to Thursday and the end of whole breast. Then you'll just have until the next Thursday to be done, done, done.
-
sicst: I understand your feeling - You can do this - we will hang on together... My treatment doesn't have boosts, just whole breast and lymph nodes - at a little higher dose... I understand... I have 9 more to go.
Do any of you ladies know what I should do about the red/raw spot under my breast - at first RO told me to powder it but now, when I lift my breast, it feels like it is going to rip open... I have put the x-clair cream on it then a baby washcloth underneath my breast so it doesn't stick to itself... I hope that will work....guess ask the nurse/ NP tomorrow..
-
slcst21 Hang in there it will all be over soon, when I got to my last week I was at my worst...thought to myself, what would happen if I just didnt go? but of course I came to my senses and got in the car and went. My tx center was and hour away but close to some stores that we dont have in my neighborhood so I would treat myself by stopping in these stores and brouse (and sometimes buy something YIKES dont tell my DH) Remember its just ?5? weeks out of our loooong lives.
GMAFoley My nurse said to use cornstarch under my breast and arm if rubbing and of course to lie with arm open to the air ... but who has the time to do that, maybe in bed at night? I am done and under my armpit is purple, but not sore, but I am not working either.
-
Hi everyone!! I am reaching the end of my treatments! Yay!!!! My RO told me last Thursday that the last week of my treatments will be the hardest on me..because the treatments will be the harshest yet..but I know, I'm getting closer. I can't thank everyone in here enough for all of the positive support.
