Questions for vegans

Options

Hi There,

I have been following a strict vegan diet for three months.  I feel great.  But, I am losing far too much weight.  Has this happened to anyone else?  Any pointers on how to increase my weight?

Thanks, Bruburn

I wasn't following a strict vegan diet but I was close and I too just had the weight falling off of me (and I wasn't overweight to begin with so I started to get concerned).  The weight loss seems to have leveled off (after about 4-5 months) and I admit, I'm not as strict as I'd been during those first 4 - 5 months.  I think I'm going back to being stricter because I don't feel as well as I did when I was being more careful.  Anyway, SusanK8 - thanks for the tips.  If you have anything else to recommend about eating vegan I'd love to hear more.

    Bruburn,

I have been a fairly strict vegan since 2007. At first I lost weight quite easily, which was fine with me. However, after about a year, this stopped. Now my weight stays about the same. So I think your weight lose may level off after several months.

    Best,

    Sandie

Apple, that's yummy looking food. Thanks, I'm sure I can make use of some of those recipes, especially the flatbreads as I'd like to stop eating standard bread.  I'll need a dehydrator though.

Hi all: I have not given up meat completley but finding out more and more that I just don't desire it with my meals. I would love to have some vegan recipes. I find myself leaning more towards sauteed or baked vegetables as a meal. I am afraid of tofu, because I am ER+ & PR+. I would love to try some of your recipes, especially the ones that help towards weight loss. I have a few pounds that I would like to lose and jumpstart  changing to a vegan lifestyle. I like all kinds of vegetables and mostly eat yellow rice , when I have it. If anyone is willing to share I would appreciate it very much, if it is not too much trouble.

Susan: That is what I need to know, the rules to be a healthy vegan. I do take B12 everyday. I eat almonds, pistachios,or walnuts when not eating meat for protein. I take digestive enzymes, especially when I eat meat to help it digest.

Susan: Thank you so much! I like all the vegetables you named and I add quinoa to my vegetable soup. I take iron and vit c everyday I had DIEP surgery on May 20th, so I need the c for healing and the iron for energy already. I will start soaking my almonds. I will make a trip to Whole Foods to get the protein powder and organic vegetables to make juice.

    Bruburn,

I believe you have a one year old.. I too had a baby when I switched over.. and lost a ton of weight.. I think a lot of mine was baby weight.. maybe same happened to you?  Mine has leveled off now for the last 3-4 months and I've been doing this over a year now..

Hello!  I was motivated to try a vegan lifestyle and diet after reading Patrick Quillin's book.   I have cut out all meats and dairy, and avoid soy and tofu (my cancer likes estrogen).

I had my labs checked and everything was great according to my oncologist.  However, there are days when I feel tired and fatigued.

Is this leftover from chemo and rads? Or is it the vegan diet? I finished chemo in Feb 2011 and rads in April 2011 after an adrenalectomy and bilateral mastectomy.

I would love to hear from fellow vegans who have recovered from BC.

    thanks!

    Lucy

i found veganism made my blood red cell counts too low.. So, i eat meat sometimes.. a few times a week, or an ounce or two a day.. I don't love it so it is easy to do.  Back when I was an athlete.. I snarfed it down big time.. I'd get so hungry if I didn't eat a huge steak at least once a week I would practically pass out.  I was skinny too from so much exercise.. scary skinny..I weighed about 110 and now weigh 135... and am not fat. (not too tall either).

I have a good friend on facebook whose photos are public.. Man she is the coolest foodie ever.. Actually she only eats RAW food.. no cooking for her, but she live in SO California so it's nice and warm.  If you tell her you know Mary Bryde Stevermer.. she'll befriend you.  She also has links to the coolest vegan places and recipes.
