Ache in my hip...

Options

I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer almost 5 years ago and I am taking Tamoxifen. I have been doing really well for the last two years in not obsessing over every little ache and pain that comes my way. That is, until my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 (lung) cancer last month. Now cancer is once again in the front of my mind..I am worried for her, and now I am worried for me again. :(

My left hip has been achy for a few weeks. No pain, just achy. The only thing I can think it could be (other than bone mets) is that I did an intense workout video a few weeks ago and it involved doing the twist. I do remember telling my husband shortly afterwards that my hips hurt from doing it. But would they still hurt after a few weeks of not doing the video? And why is it just on one side?

I had my 6-month check up last month and my bloodwork and tumor marker tests both came back normal. My oncologist is 4 hours away (yes, we live in the sticks..lol), so it's not that easy for me to just run in there and get checked.

If it were bone mets, would I be having genuine pain? Would it be steady or come and go? Please someone, send me some words of encouragement? I am a true worrywart, through and through!!

I don't know about bone mets but I hear it often doesn't hurt until a bone breaks. It's very possible that you injured yourself exercising.  I would go find a doctor and have it checked out but I don't think I'd freak out too much.

Im sure somebody else will answer your question about what it feels like.

Kim, I do have bone mets and really haven't had much pain. When I do, it is an ache and it does come and go. Although my nurse practitioner says it doesn't go away. Who knows. Anyway, I did have severe pain in my right hip last year and, of course, I assumed it was mets. I was playing tennis at the time and was on Faslodex getting ready to restart chemo. I did some research and I think I had bursitis. These hormonals mess with our joints and ligaments and our bodies pay the price. I would definitely get it checked out but I bet it's related to your workout. I just wanted you to know that even those of us with high risk for more mets have aches and pains that aren't the cancer.

Kim;  I'm going throught the same as you with the exception of my aches and pains being in both hips.  I also had good tumor marker test results yesterday but my onc is doing a bone scan just to be sure and to alleviate my concern.

I basically sailed through all of this and for some reason, I have been so focused on a possible recurrence.  He highly doubts it is a recurrence but says it doesn't hurt to check on it.

I honestly think I've developed Trochanteric Bursitis which affects the outer surface of the hip joint and can be caused from an injury or for that matter being sedentary.  It can produce pain when standing up, walking, climbing and for that matter be aggrevated from laying on your side.

Worth getting checked out however so  I would definitely request a bone scan and from there you can see an ortho.  Good luck Heather

I had hip aches and left lower back aches. It prompted me back to my Oncologist a couple of months ago (I had finished my treatment at end of Feb 2011). He ordered another bone scan to "rule out mets" and it came back clear. I still have the ache in my hip and back. It is also in my left breast (my cancer was in my right breast). I called my Onco again (Yep, he probably thinks I am crazy) and he "is not concerned". I wish that I wasn't such a worrywart that is for sure but I was diagnosed twice last year (first time cervical, then breast)--both times I went to Doc after some ache prompted me--obviously I have become hyper-vigilant with my aches/pains. I am heading to my GP tomorrow for regular check up (as I am still off work) and I am going to ask her to check my left side. If nothing is found, someone suggested an osteopath to help with the muscles....honestly, cancer drives you crazy ;)

I don't know anything about how bone mets feel, but I was having a pain in my neck for several days in a row.  It really hurt a lot.  I was worried there was cancer there.  The onc is always feeling my neck at appointments.  I guess there are lymph nodes there?   I told my DH about it and he reminded me that I slipped in the shower a few days earlier and fell all the way back and hit my head.  He said I probably wrenched my neck.  He was right!  It took a couple more days and I was back to normal.  I am sure most of the time it ends up being something like that.  Rachel5738,  definitely agree with you, cancer drives me crazy too!

    Oh

I could have written these posts.  I have a pain in my right hip-- have had a "light" pain there off and on since the end of treatment in 2009...but usually went away with exercise, etc.

Of course, I did ramp it up at the gym last week, heavier lower body weights- and I do think I injured myself.... and it is sore..... I think the general theory is wait two weeks and if it is still an issue, have it looked at.

I am trying hard to remind myself that it is very likely my overzealousness on the hip adductor machine (which I will no longer be using) because I can also feel it in my lower back.... I do find that sitting is more painful--- and most transitions twinge.  I have had all sorts of minor aches since starting femara

I just will not do any more testing---- it is summer and I plan to enjoy it as much as I can.  I raced to have my MRI and a colonoscopy (all clear) before Memorial Day.  I have a silly rule, but I just will NOT let any of this ruin my summers...... happy to test the other 9 months of the year, but I just want to be carefree in the summers--even though I am working full time!!!!

So, are there any suggestions besides ibuprofen to deal with this hip issue?????

I'm the same....don't want tests through the summer. Last summer, I started treatment. I dud see my Doc today... She isn't concerned ... Seems to be the same line as my oncologist. She suggested anti-inflammatory.

Thanks everyone. I hate worrying about this too. I do feel more sore than in pain and it also seems to be radiating to my lower back at times (so of course now I am worried that it is not only in my bones but in my spinal cord as well). Ugh!! :(

I haven't done that video in weeks, and I also haven't done my recumbent bike in almost two weeks. Shouldn't the soreness be gone by now? It feels fine when I lie down in bed at night and seems to be at its worst when I first wake up in the morning. Does this sound like muscle soreness rather than mets?

Kim, mets will keep you awake at night and it would be difficult to lay down you would find it extremely difficult to find a comfortable position.  If your pain is coming more in the  morning I would suggest that it could well be more muscle and ligamant pain and you are feeling it in the morning because you stay in one place for a long time when you are sleeping.

Hip pain seems to be a common complaint for many of us on BCO.

I've been having some myself.  Just an aching, always at night, I don't notice it much at all during the day.  No clue why, but I've had this pain before so I'm not worrying about it.

I do appreciate everyone chiming in.  It's such a comfort that we can learn from each other!

My hip really bothered me today (again, soreness..not pain) and it kind of put a damper on my day out with my kids because all I could think about all day was "mets". :(

I find that it is problematic in the morning-- and sometimes it wakes me up at night--usually more towards the early am--then is fine most of the day...... I am going to give it another week before I think about going to the dr.  Ibuprofen seems to work ok, but I am a week out of the gym, and that affects me even more.....

MA2K it is possible that you are feeling the effects of either arthritis or your meds but if it continues and really starts to annoy you, please get it checked out......What meds are you on?

    Hi

I am on lupron and femara---  had managed to pretty much mitigate all of the stiffness over the past 2 years--- mostly with exercise.  Because this came on after a particularly aggressive day at the gym, and has gotten better over the week, I think it is related... also, I can tell when I stretch that it feels like a muscle or a ligament.  BUT, all that said, it does hurt (although not hurting right now--- seems to be fine) periodically.  And, seems to be worse sitting- non-existent when standing.....

I will get checked if it does not continue to subside this week--it is already far better this week than last.... but if it is arthritis, I need to know that.  I am waiting for my bone density test results from May--- so far, it has been normal, but I know that these drugs have an effect.

I have been thinking about taking a drug"vacation" (if onc approves) just to see if this settles down.... still need to think about it.

thanks--- let's see what this week brings.

    Hi everyone,

I  am having the hip pain too!!   My right hip started hurting about a month ago. It's kind of stiff and painful and the intensity varies throughout the day.  Morning actually seems better than later in the day. I do have a job where I stand up all day, but that is nothing new, been doing that for 25 years, so I don't think its that.  Went to my onc last week for my 3 month visit, all blood work was good. He said its too early to do any tests on my hip if I've only had the pain about a month, but next time I go in or if it gets worse he will do an xray. He basically said , welcome to old age. It was probably degenerative, . but I am freaked out. It doesnt seem normal to me!  So I may go back and get that xray sooner.  I have been on Tamoxifen for almost 2 yrs.

I have been on tamox for 15 months or so, and my hips ache off and on all day.  If you check the tamox boards, you'll see a lot of us have the same aches and soreness.  My onc's office recommended Tylenol Arthritis, and it has helped somewhat. Every time I stand up, I kind of swagger and stretch....I hate that it makes me feel older than I am.

I also have hip pain in my left hip.  The pain Dr pt me on 200mg Celebrex twice a day,he felt it was arthritis caused from radiation (big long explaination he gave me)  Anyway BS wanted a hip x-ray to rule out mets which it did.  Before the Celebrex I would wake up in the middle of the night in such pain I would have to get up and take a pain pill.  At work when I would get out of my chair I would limp around for a few seconds.  Celebrex seems to be working. Some days and nights I still get pain but I can live with it now.

Add me to the list- on Tamoxifen almost 3 years, and a bad achy hip tonight. It gets really tight if I don't exercise, but workouts make it ache. Sitting at a desk all day bothers me, too. I would LOVE to take a vacation form Tamox, but I don't think I dare. I am only 46!

I was diagnosed in 1998 with Breast Cancer.  Chemo/Rad and Tamoxifen.  I remained on tamoxifen until 2007 and felt I was safe.  I was diagnosed with Hip femur cancer in 2008.  I was afraid to get off of the tamoxifen so my Dr humored me.  I'm glad she did as long as she did.  It does hurt but near as much as it should.  I ignored the aches until it ached and then I had a pending fracture that took half the Femur.  I'm ok!!  Walking like everything and its been two years.  Not trying to scare you but please go get it checked.  (:

    hugs

P.S.  Please don't take a medicine vacationEmbarassed I am also on Femara and Lupron.  Had Lupron shot today.  Been good for two years.  It had pending fracture on hip and went all the way down to the femur almost to the knee.
