Why oinly one religion gets it's own section?
Perhaps this is the wrong place to put this but I can't find how to send messages to the 'powers that be' so will try it here.
Why is there only a section for Muslim women? I'm LDS (Morman) and I'd like to be able to talk here with other Sisters who are going through the Beast. I'm sure there are Jewish, Catholic, 'Christian', Buddist, Wiccan, Athesist, Agnostics and so many more that I can't begin to list all, There is only one religion that has special status here. Why?. BC does not go with religion.

I would disagree that Muslim women get a "special" status. By your argument, Canadians also get a special status. Regardless, as a Buddhist Agnostic, it doesn't trouble me in the least that there is a section of the Board--not merely a single thread--for Muslim women.
If you are looking for other Christians to hang out with, there are as number of threads that migh provide what you are looking for under "spiritual support."
-
I'm pretty sure that there's a Catholic thread that I see occasionally and other threads that are "faith based" - even a thread for non-believers. You could start your own - just look at a forum that it would fit best and think of a good title and ask other Morman women to join you.
You can reach a moderator by doing a private message (PM) to "Moderators". I also think that I remember that there's a thread for "Moderators" at the end of the list of Forums.
-
Simple answer. Start your own thread.
-
Kicks:
I was almost correct. The next to last item on the list of forums (see the "Jump to a Forum" pull down box) contains a lisiting for "Comments, Suggestions, Feature Requests". I think that this would be a place to ask the Moderators to set up a section for your faith.
-
There is a section at the bottom that does says 'Moderators' but ALSO says do not post here unless you are a Moderator.
I cannot start my own SECTION that is dedicated to any religion. I did start a thread -that is obvious - but I can not start a SECTION. Cerainly there are threads here and there but there is no SECTION for any other relifgion other than Muslim.
i think it's great for Muslim women with BC to have a place to 'talk' BUT there are more of us of othere religions that should ALSO have a place to talk with others of our faith.
-
Kicks:
As I said in my prior post, if you go to the topic near the bottom of the Forum list (Comments, Suggestions, Feature Requests) you can start a thread there call "Can we have a Forum for Mormon BC patients". You should be able to have a dialog with the Moderators there. I also find that doing a PM to a Moderator usually results in a quick answer.
-
Atheist here praying to Allah and Buddha that we please not include yet more forums. There are way too many already. It is impossible to please everybody. If anything, there are forums that should be consolidated, or should not be forums at all, IMO - especially the ones that break things down by ages. It gets silly.
You can always start your own mormon forum (just as there is a catholics thread). Anybody can start a protestant thread. There is already an atheist thread. Anyone can start a jewish thread.
-
kicks- I think I understand your question. I never realized that the Muslim Women's topic was an actual forum section, not just a thread. I think you have a very valid point and I would send a question to the Moderators (private message and search "moderator" from member list). I would think it would be more correct to have threads (Jewish, Muslim, Mormon, Buddhist whatever) in the Connecting with Others section, not a stand alone Muslim Women's section. That way, if a BC person with some other spiritual or religious belief wants to start a thread, all things are equal. By the way, I don't care if you can't spell or type Mormon, I am sure you know what you are!
-
You are right on one small point - I am not the greatest 'typer' - I did hit an 'a" instead of an 'o' - I do make a lot of mistakes - I'm not perfect - nor are you!
"Step on toes" - there is a whole SECTION for 'your' (at least it seems that it's yours) religion but I'm told to start a 'thread' - get real. Your religion is the only one that has it's own SECTION!
Certainly there are different cultural and religious beliefs that go along with dealing with BC BUT there is no reason that only one religion should have a SECTION dedicated to them. (Yeah there are probably other typo in that but I really don't care.)
-
Athena- I couldn't agree more. We seem to have way too many subcategories in every direction. However, kicks makes a very good point that only Muslim Women with BC is a forum unto itself, not just a thread. If that is the model, the Moderators will have to create forums for every conceivable religion and inclination.
-
I am not opposed to there being a SECTION for Muslim women - I think it's Great BUT there needs to be SECTIONS for other religions/belief or there needs to be no relligious SECTIONS. Many of us of other religions/beliefs would like to be able to have SECTIONS for our SIsters/Brothers within our religios/beliefs.
-
I am going to take a stab at this one and see if I can get through tonight without a scathing from someone.
I don't see this Muslim section as being totally religious in nature. I always viewed it as the women are living in countries where healthcare if scarce - treatment can be hundreds of miles from home and that those wonderful ladies living in other countries may need to connect in order to find doctors that they can use. Take Morrocco for example.....my dh went over there for 3 weeks last year and ran into a native morrocan whose wife was diagnosed with BC. They lived hundreds of miles from the nearest medical facility so trying to do radiation for instance was impossible for them let alone chemo. The wife ended up with a double masectomy and no reconstruction because that was not available for her either.
The muslim culture is very different from the typical US culture so there is that issue to deal with. Communication maybe extremely limited and they don't have the operating systems to go through hundreds of threads to connect with one another. My dh was lucky to get on line every 4 to 5 days as he was in a very remote part of Morocco and there was one week I didn't even hear from him.
Whatever it is worth - I don't get the point of "we all need to be treated fair" mentality. So what if the muslim women have their own forum - does it really matter?
-
Kicks - have you even read the threads in the Muslim forum? I didn't find all threads to be of a religious nature.
-
what jancie said.
Add to the logic, it can be really hard for Muslim women to seek and find treatment and information. Anything that helps a sister get the treatment she needs is just fine by me.
-
We welcome comments and suggestions about the site, including the Community's thoughts about how BCO is organized. For example, member suggestions recently inspired the new Bone Health and Bone Loss forum.
As always, we'll let the Community know if there are changes ahead, and thanks for your input.

So what you are saying is that only one religion deserves a Section for women of that religion? Sisters of other religions dont need support from others of their religion?
Obviously I'm not a Muslim but Muslim is the only religion that is listed with a Section of it's own. As has been said by some there, if you're of another religion - then start a THREAD. But where do you do that?
What it comes down to is there is one religion that has a Section for it exclusively but there are none for other religions!
-
Kicks, so what? So what if Muslim women have their own section. There is a whole section for spiritual women. It is called Prayers and Spiritual Inspiration. There are over 700 topics in that section. So your assertion that Muslim women are the only ones who have their own section is false.
-
I find it odd that this is such an issue to you, Kick.
While I am not LDS, I do know that the general conferences in the past 5 years have been emphasizing the LDS community to be more accepting and less judgemental of those people of different religions. You have come across as one that is totally insulted that there is not an LDS forum on this board and BCO has been discriminating towards the LDS faith.
The people that have been subject to a great amount of criticism and discrimination in the past 10 years have been the muslims and if they have their own forum - well so be it - maybe it makes them feel a little bit more safe and just maybe they have had to deal with a lot of crap from others because of their religion, faith, country they are from, etc.
I think if everyone had to live in a 3rd world country for sometime that maybe they would be a little bit more appreciative of what they have.
And if you are wondering - no, I am not muslim, I am not LDS but my mother-in-law who died of breast cancer was muslim -she was a great woman, wonderful mother and a great wife to my father-in-law who is a Coon Ass from LA.
I live in Utah - I am in a LDS state and believe me I have a lot of friends that are LDS. They accept the fact I am not LDS and I accept the fact that they are LDS - it goes both ways. This is why this thread is eating me up inside because I feel that the LDS community is not being represented in the manner they are taught to act.
-
Kicks, relax! I get your point that if the Mods create a format to accomodate one religion, it could be perceived as a slight to the many others not to have the same thing, but is it? That would imply intent, and I just don't think BC.org is up to anything that sinister. Maybe they could stand to tweak the format at some point in the future, but I don't think adding forums for every conceivable religion is the answer.
If your real aim is to connect with Mormons with B/C, why not give a new thread a try? Of course, if you have another aim in mind, I guess you could hang out here and just belabor the point and stir things up. You decide which is the more important to you.
-
Just a suggestion....
Use the search box to find other folks that are Mormon. See what forum they post in most often.
Just put Mormon, LDS or both in the search box.
I know a lady that is a Jehovah's Witness, she tried that and was able to connect with other Witnesses.
If I wanted to start a thread to connect with others of my faith, I'd start in the *Prayers and Spiritual Insiration* forum
-
But she doesn't want a thread - she wants a whole forum!
-
Kicks has a very valid point. Why not make a "Spiritual Issues" section and turn the 'Muslim Women with BC' section into a thread and put it in there. That way, anyone can start their own thread for their own spiritual group or beliefs and everyone will be represented equally.
-
I agree with Jancie and Clyn, I never thought it offensive, thought it was more of a culture and not about religion. So I'm okay with it.
Peace and Love,
Edie

Oh Lord/Allah/J.Smith/Budah/Sun Goddess/big person in the sky have mercy! We have no idea how Kicks feels about other religions, she simply suggested a new topic and from there it took on a life of its own. Is it really necessary to a) mock someone for a spelling mistake b) questions someones beliefs? I find it interesting that people here are urging Kicks to be more accepting of others but it doesn't appear as though anyone is being very accepting of her. No matter who you pray to, being kind to others should be a given. No I am not LDS, I am not Muslim but I am a woman going through breast cancer just like the rest of you and I come here to find and give support to others who understand and can relate to my erratic state of mind, regardless of religion, race, gender, geographic location, stage, node involvement, IDC, ILC, DCIS, LCIS, hormone reception and anything else that might make us different. That is the beauty of this place...we are all DIFFERENT in one way or another. Let's get back to supporting each other. I will now step off my soap box and get back to living my life.
-
i think the mods should re-create the section as "spiritual" and take the threads from there.
and along the spirit of angi's post: don't assume kicks is exhibiting racist thought. she may be, but assuming is also prejudice.
i assumed the Muslim section was more about culture than religion per se. Mods, what do you think?
-
Next thing you know the Catholics, Buddists, and Pagans will each want their own forum - they have been more than happy to start a "thread" in the Prayers and Spiritual forum but hey.....let's give each and every religion their own forum and then it will take forever to sift through it all to make sure you post in the correct forum at all times.
Again, the muslim forum appears to be a cultural based forum - it is a means for them to communicate with one another regarding breast cancer and how to obtain treatment that meets their religious requirements, etc.
This is just getting out of hand and if Kicks were so adament about meeting up with other Mormons she would have already started a thread - and she hasn't.
-
Since Mormons are part of the Christian faith, following that logic you would ask for a Christian section, as the Muslim section isn't broken down into sects which indeed makes it more culturally focused.
Getting a bit silly, I think.
-
Muslims I guess is because their religion affects all parts of their daily living, I saw that in the middle east,it is more a culture , it is a way of living.
For others our religion is more spiritual and we do not separate from others because of our differences in faiths.
We do not need to assimilate to Western culture and we can find friends of any religion, I guess it is not that easy for them.
-
Kicks if you want to start a mormon thread -just do it there is nothing stopping you. I suggest that you use Mormon as the first word, so, it's easier to find. Go to prayers and spirituality forum. Many different beliefs have there own threads.
-
It's obvious that the moderators hate America. There's no other possibility. Oh, they could be terrorist-loving, communist, anti-Semitic, atheists.
<sarcasm off>
