TC vs. ddTC

I'm looking for some advice as I make my chemo decision.  MO is recommending TC x 4 every three weeks but there is a new research opportunity starting in the next few weeks looking at dense dose TC with Neulasta every two weeks.  He says I would be a perfect candidate for this trial.  I am concered that the side effects of the dd TC will be too much and would love to hear what others have experienced.

It's hard to say because you don't know how your body can handle it.  I did ddAC every 2 weeks X4 and the went to Taxol X8. I was suppose to do dd taxol but I started having neuropathy so they went with the single dose every week.  For my last 3 they stitched to Taxotere which was far worse than and of the others.

Which T are they planning on doing?

All you can do is try dd & if you don't tolerate it well then you can go to the single dose. NJ

kl22: Somewhere on here, or maybe on the chemo board, there is a thread about TC, and you may want to post there to find some women who did dose dense.

It is very hard to predict how your body will react to any chemo. I elected to do dose dense AC and, despite some warning from my onc that it would be a tough slog, I found it quite manageable. I think it helped that I was in reasonably good shape to start, and kept exercising throughout.

Is it possible you could start with the dd schedule and have a fall-back plan if the SEs are too much?

kll22 ~ Having done TCx4, one thing I would research if I was you before agreeing to either regimen is the permanent hair loss a very few BCO members have reported.  There's a thread on it here. Thankfully, it appears to be a very rare SE.  But I'd want to know if any of those who are dealing with it now did DD, or if there's any suspected link to an increased possibility with DD, or if DD might even help ensure that doesn't happen.

The only major issue I had with TC was extreme muscle weakness, and, in retrospect, I wonder if that might have been lessened if I'd gotten through it quicker.  It certainly would have been nice to get it over with faster.

Good luck, whichever you decide to do ~  Deanna

I've been doing DD AC (every 2 weeks) for 4 treatments, although they had to reduce the chemo dosage because of a zero white blood count after the first treatment.  Supposedly it's because I''d had chemo before.  The every-two-week schedule itself has been totally doable for me.  I'm about to start now on DD Taxol (every 2 weeks) but again we'll have to see how that goes.  They might have to put me on 12 weekly treatments if the blood counts go south again.  But if I were you, I'd go ahead and try the DD schedule.  If it's too much, your oncologist will move you back to every 3 weeks so you really won't have lost anything.  Good luck.

I did dd AC, got finished 5 weeks ago.  It was doable.  Then I started dose dense Taxol with weekly Herceptin.  I ended up having an allergic reaction to Taxol and having to switch to Taxotere.  Having 3 of those every 3 weeks.  Had the first one 6 days ago.  So far, it is okay, although I do feel weaker than I did on AC.  I think I'm glad I'm not doing dd.  But then I just came out of the AC and lung problems because of the allergic reaction.  Maybe that has something to do with it.  Good luck with which ever you choose.
