Is it too Risky to wait another month to retrieve Eggs
Hi everyone,
My name is Sandy, 27 years old. Was diagnosed with TNBC on April 29th, had a lumpectomy on May 9th. Path report showed clear margins but posterior side was 0.45mm (makes me nervous), no nodes involved. I'm supposed to get married this September and would like to have kids one day if I get through all of this. I was at the fertility clinic today and the whole process of things would lead me to start chemo July 14th. That's about 2.5 months after my lumpectomy. Is this too risky? Should I just take the chance and hope my period comes back?? Or should I save some eggs????
Thoughts?
Sandy

I waited about 6 weeks after lumpectomy for chemo for FMLA reasons. My onco was fine with that. I think I read that up to 12 weeks is considered safe. Have you asked your onco?
From things I have read here, it seems like the younger you are the better your chances are that your period will return. I did chemo at 40 and after 7 months it looks like mine may be starting again. -
I would talk to your oncologist and see what he/she recommends. I had my eggs harvested before starting chemo and my oncologist was fine with it (I haven't had surgery yet). Because of your triple negative status, the hormone shots are not a concern. Good luck with your decision! My oncologist really encouraged me to harvest my eggs because he could see how important the possibility of having children was to me. My fertility doctor said that chemo ages your ovaries about 10 years, so age is definitely on your side for possible fertility after chemo, but for me I wanted the extra insurance (plus I'm 33).
Best wishes!

Thanks Ladies,
I hear 3 months is an ok window for treatment, I just want to be as aggressive as possible as soon as possible. I also don't want to regret anything..geez...so many decisions
Thanks for your input

If it were me, I'd want to save some eggs just in case. It's too hugely important an issue to take a chance, but that's just my opinion. Good luck to you -- and congratulations on your upcoming marriage.

I was diagnosed at age 28. I tried to do the egg harvesting thing before chemo, but I didn't ovulate that month. My oncologist didn't want me to wait any longer for chemo and suggested I skip the egg harvest. He said my life is priority...
Good Luck. And you are welcome to join the "calling all ladies in their 20s" thread. A few ladies have similar concerns...

I've already had kids so my persective is a little different.....my kids are young..one was 7 at diagnosis...to tell you the truth, my kids are the main reason I went through all this chemo, rads, etc. I think I'd get my eggs.
I think they mentioned you have an upcoming wedding. I got engaged (I was a single mom) and then 9 days later found out I had cancer. I had an awsome wedding 2 years later...I'll try to put up a pic. I had crappy hair but the most beautiful wig....only one implant (long story) but I couldn't have felt more beautiful than I did on my wedding day. Dang...can't figure out how to post a pic. Email me and I'll tell you my facebook page.
hugs
Meg
