...for your help in finding a light-weight form that feels right to people when I hug them.
Just got my new Amoena Weighted Leisure Forms, and they're light (despite being called "weighted") and comfortable even in the heat. They're also impregnated with silver so they're antibacterial -- perfect for my chest lymphedema which is so vulnerable to infection.
So I'm back to hugging in comfort, knowing my hugs now feel like "real" and nobody will be backing away with that confused look on their face.
Finding the right form is just so satisfying!
Thanks, Barbara!

I'd like to join Binney in thanking Barbara/Erica for all the helpful advice she offers here at BCO, and for her wonderful website http://breastfree.org/
Finding the right combination of breast form and bra is a trial-and-error process. Thanks to Barbara, some of us have had fewer trials and less error.
I think the more important thing she has provided me, though, is reassurance that it's okay to go "breast-free". It's okay to decline reconstruction and even to go without a prosthesis and/or mastectomy bra. I already declined reconstruction once, when I had my left mast/SNB 3-1/2 years ago. (Has it really been that long?) Thanks to Barbara, I know that if I ever have to deal with BC on the other side, I have lots of options.

Binney,
I'm so glad you like the Amoena weighted leisure forms (Style 132 if anyone else reads this and is wondering) and thanks for taking the time to let me know! I wondered whether you had tried them and what you thought. I still really like mine and wear them often. My only caveat regards washing them. The rep at Amoena recommends washing the cloth backing (the part that is against your skin in a regular bra) on a frequent basis and doing a thorough immersion washing only every couple of weeks. I really can't figure out how to just wash the backing without wetting the entire form and I've found that the form takes quite a while to air dry. If you come up with any tips, please let me know.
otter,
Thank you so much for your kind words. It's so great to be part of a community of supportive women like you. I always enjoy reading your knowledgeable posts.

Barbara, when you do wash your forms via the thorough immersion method, does the water turn black? I must have missed the washing instructions part (was just looking for a lightly weighted foam form) and it was quite a shocker when I washed the forms the first time. Silly me, I kept washing and rinsing until the water was "clean and clear".
-
Hi Sher,
I actually emailed Amoena about washing instructions. Not sure they came with the forms or if they did, I lost them. I didn't have any black water when washing, but I do feel as if it's really hard to get the soap out (I use Amoena's own cleanser, and not that much of it), so I do keep rinsing and rinsing also, though I've tried to cut back on that.
The "weight" in the middle of these forms is a powder, but I think it's contained in some kind of pouch. Maybe the pouch leaked and caused the black color. Did yours take a long time to dry? Are they usable now?
-
Barbara, it's been awhile since I got the forms and washed them but don't think they took any longer to dry than my Amoena 126 forms. If I'm remembering correctly, the black water was immediately noticeable, so I must have assumed the "silver" was coming off the outer or surface part of the form and kept washing/rinsing. I never saw any weight difference from the 126 forms (maybe I washed it all out?) so never wore them. Had I known there was a powder pouch enclosed and this is where the weight came from, I wouldn't have wanted this form in the first place.
Didn't Amoena used to have a triangular 128 form that was the same as the 126 but with added weight?
-
Sher,
The Amoena 128 isn't the same as the 126 plus a little weight--it has a different shape and a seam on the front. Regarding the new Amoena Comfort+ foam form, maybe you have the unweighted version (the number is 130) of this form, which is made in an unweighted and weighted version. The weighted version is very light compared to silicone. I like it because it adds just enough weight to keep my bras nicely in place.
-
Barbara, true on keeping things in place. "Weighted", though, sure doesn't mean "heavy" in this case -- they're really comfortable, with just enough heft to keep them in place nicely. Or as my fitter said, "Ooh, I like these! They won't be riding up around your ears!" She was really pleased to discover them and will be suggesting them for her other customers.

After I posted, I looked at the 128 online and yep, found it to be totally different. Just that I keep thinking the Amoena rep said the one they ordered for me was a replacement for something that had been discontinued and the silver was added. I just checked my forms (luckily I didn't cut off the tags) - they are the 132, but there is no weight unless it was only from the powder which I washed out.
-
Sher, maybe you should bring this back to the place you got it (or contact the place you ordered it from). There should be a little weight and yes, the powder is the weight source (one benefit is that it doesn't trigger metal detectors like other weighted foam forms do). You shouldn't be able to wash out the powder -- if that happened, you at least deserve a replacement or otherwise an opportunity to exchange for something else. This being a new form for Amoena, perhaps they still need to work out a few problems...
-
I doubt the place where I got the forms would be much help, but I will try to contact Amoena directly and will let you know what I find.

Here's the response back from Amoena on the 132 forms.
"The weight in the 132 leisure form is a barium sulfate powder (not an antimicrobial silver powder). This powder has no known allergies and is a natural occurring mineral that is used for the weight in place of the standard metal pellets that are normally used. Because this is a powder, if the form was saturated with water, then the powder would change colors and any of it that dissolved into the water would wash out of the form making it a little lighter. The powder is designed to clump and not wash out like a normal powder does however it would take a little longer to dry out. The powder is not contained in a pouch but in between two foam layers.
I would recommend that you only wash the cover with a wet cloth as needed. SmartSilver technology is integrated into the back fabric, an antimicrobial treatment that inhibits bacteria growth which results in a more hygienic climate during healing and recovery. This silver treatment does not wash or wear off and keeps working through the life of the form."

Thanks, Sher, that's really interesting. I just assumed the powder was inside some kind of pouch. I really love this form but am at a loss as to how to wash the (non-removable) cover effectively. Any suggestions? Although this form is wonderful at minimizing perspiration, if I'm outside in 90 degree heat for several hours, I do perspire at least somewhat and would want to wash the form. One thing I like about this form is that it's so comfortable against my bare chest. If it's so hard to wash, though, I may have to limit my use to bras with pockets, so the forms will stay cleaner.
BTW, I do think my forms are a little lighter now than when I first purchased, so I must have washed out some of the powder...
-
Follow Up FYI - I just received another email back from the Amoena rep offering to replace my forms with either another set of 132 forms or the unweighterd 130 forms. An interesting note is that the 130 forms are supposed to be a bit heavier than the older unweighted 126 forms.
