Hi Cyborg, I'll be starting my fast Sunday after lunch for chemo #2 on Tuesday afternoon. Started losing my hair everywhere today. Went this afternoon and got a very short pixie cut. I'm guessing it won't be long before I go back to have the hair buzzed. I am not working through chemo Which is good since I find I am needing 10-11 hours of sleep each night. I am frustrated that my picc prevents me from gardening. The weeds are out of control. Hope things are going well for you and for Robyn too.

I am still debating.  I would only be doing it to help with the SEs.  First round the SEs were diahrrea and a cytoxan induced headache.  Not sure if fasting will help either one.  Thoughts?  Also, how do you get around having to take food with the steroids?

I will fast 48 hours before and 24 hours after chemo like I did the first time. My weight is pretty much back up to what it was before my last pre-chemo fast. I did not have any headaches or diarrhea as side effects the first go around. I am on FEC and was given Zofran to take after chemo - the pharmacist said I did not have to take it with food just water.

I don't think this drastic measure is necessary with all that is out there now.   I think I threw up once during chemo, thanks to anti-emetics.   Starving your body of nutrition when it needs it most sounds like a bad idea, IMO.   But I am not a doctor.

My first chemo is scheduled for June 21st. I have been reading about fasting and chemo, I first heard it from Katherine Albrechts' radio show.  I am going to do it.  Do you "all-stars" :) recommend the 60 hour pre, or the 48?  How long after? And is it from the beginning or end of the chemo treatment?

Nicolgirl: I am going to do 62 hours before and 24 after. Reading the above initial part of the thread gives info that fasting can help with more than just minimizing GI distress. The most important thing for me was to remain hydrated so the needle can go in easier for chemo.

Next week I start low dose Taxoterible as a 2nd part of a vaccine trail. I am going to try fasting after lunch the day before. I have had Taxotere before, so I will be able to tell the difference.

On my 1st round of chemo, if I lost 3 pounds they gave my extra steroids to boost my appetite.

I am happy to be reading that you are drinking plently of water to flush/save the kidneys.

Hello ladies, I am so pleased to have found this thread. I will be starting chemo on June 22nd, and it was always in my head that I would have to force myself to eat well while going through the process. My appetite is mostly absent so it was going to be tricky. However, I will now ask my onco what he thinks about the fasting idea - I hope he approves, as I think I would find it easier to not eat than eat, and if it benefits me along the way...what a bonus!

I have been on zometa 3 weekly since November and have had some pretty horrific experiences with nausea and vomiting with that, so Im thinking I am particularly vulnerable to suffering that nasty side-effect, so anything that can minimise it...Im all for it!

Its very interesting to hear how you are all getting along with it, thank you so much for sharing your experiences. My plan is to do 6 x FEC, with a CT scan half way through to check it is working..if not, I expect there will be a change to the cocktail. I just know that these things would be so alarming to me if I had not had the benefit of reading all your experiences in all things chemo...thank you to everyone who contributes as the help you give is priceless!

    Good luck ladies!

    Hello winterpeg & cyborg!

I have been lurking quietly round the forums and working hard as well and now lining up for FEC #3 on Tuesday. I will be fasting again 62pre/34 post from saturday evening till Wednesday lunchtime. I have had an ordinary couple of weeks as I caught a virus with a sore throat and a cough 1 week post infusion but luckily it did not progress to a serious infection. With antibiotic I was at work & feeling really good & energetic this week but my blood count was very low today & will need another check pre chemo. Gained back the 2 kg I lost last fast as my appetite is okay and eating healthy nutrient dense fresh food.

The benefits of fasting compared to 1st treatment were reduced headaches, much less gastro distress, better appetite, no impaired taste or smell issues (huge bonus!! Compared to 1st tx where that issue made the nausea sooo much worse!)

Looking forward to last FEC -it just feels so poisonous going in! 3x taxotere to go!

Nicolgirl- I listened to Katharine Albrechts radio interview with dr longo as well and found it very interesting! The research papers are very helpful as well and can be easily found on his web site ( google 'dr Valter Longo' and 'Nutra' )

Good luck everyone! Wishing all an easy week and good health! Cheers Robyn

Hi Robyn, so glad to hear from you again.  I was hoping all was going well with you.  Hello to you too Cyborg and Neecee and to our new friends, Nicolgirl, Ma111, and SueUK.

On day 15 after my first FEC chemo (this Wednesday) I noticed that my hair was falling out when I ran my fingers through it.  I spent about 5 minutes over the bathroom sink and when it never stopped coming out, I called the hair salon and made an appt for later that afternoon to get my hair buzzed off.  The hairdresser talked me into going with a very very short pixie and coming back for the "buzz" when the hair thinning became noticeable.  That was two days ago - today is day 17. Significant hair shedding is not happening yet.  When I check my pillowcase, there is no hair on it, and my clothing has no stray hairs.  The hair only comes out if I pull on it so I have stopped doing that.

I thought chemo would mean no more periods and was caught off guard when I got my period this past Monday (4 days late).  It turned out to be a normal period for me.  Some of the woman in my support group said they got their periods once after starting chemo but not again.  I will see if that is the case for me too.  I am actually hoping that the chemo will put me into menopause permanently so that I do not have to make a decision about having a hysterectomy.

I found out today that my HER2 results are in and I am Her2 negative.  I will not need to consider getting a port after all.  I am happy about that.  I have had enough surgery already.  I will be having my reconstruction stage 2 surgery after I am done with chemo and radiation.

The fasting was much easier than I had expected the first go around so I may try increasing the pre-chemo fast to the 62 hours cited by Dr. Longo which would mean I could eat until midnight on Saturday for chemo on Tuesday at 2 pm.  I may just fast after breakfast on Sunday which would mean about 54 hours of fasting.  It will depend on how I feel when I wake on Sunday.   I will fast for 24 hours after chemo.  My chemo treatment lasted 2 hours and I ate at 24 hours after starting chemo.  This time I will try to wait to eat until 24 hours from the end time.

I have not been sick.  I did have some constipation but continued taking one colace and one senecot per day and was regular again within a week after chemo.  I have continued this combination every day since and will probably do so throughout the chemo.

I am sleeping 11 to 12 hours a night.  I really feel I need the extra rest.  I am trying to walk on the nice days but we have had lots of rain in the past two weeks.  I am finding that I am a bit lost without having a schedule to keep to other than medical appointments.  I will try to make a todo list of one or two things a day to accomplish.  Maybe that will help me feel more productive.

I think that the theory of how fasting may improve the effectiveness of chemo may be that the fewer side effects suffered may reduce the chances that you will need your chemo drugs reduced to a lower dosage.  I do not recall if the fasting has any effect on how quickly your blood counts recover after treatment.

Good luck to all of you and I wish you all side effect free (or at least minimal) treatments.  I look forward to hearing how the fasting goes for all of you.

I feel blessed to have found this forum after listening to Dr. Albrecht.  I will be looking up the Dr. Longo today.  Thank you for suggesting that. I was supposed to have started my first round today, but due to some scheduling changes, I will be starting in 10 days.  I will do the 62 hour pre and 24 hour post.  I am drawing strength from your posts, and I am grateful that you all are taking the time to help others. You girls rock!  I will have to do both herceptin and tamoxafin, do they give me the tamox to start taking orally right away, or after chemo?  Have you had side effects from either of these?

Hi Nicolgirl, my medical oncologist told me that the tamoxifen would start after I finished the chemo.  I'm not certain but I believe that is the case for herceptin too.

It is really nice to have so much information from people going through the breast cancer experience in one place.  I had been reading these boards since the end of last year before actually joining and starting to post in March of this year.  If hearing what I'm doing helps others who are not ready to participate in a way other than just reading, like I did initially, I'm happy.

How much water are you girls drinking on your fasting days? (a couple gallons each day? A certain number of ounces?) I've heard stories of dehydration, and I want to be sure to drink enough, especially in combination with fasting.

I'm looking forward (if you can call it that!) to posting my fasting results next week. Thanks, Winterpeg, neecee, Robyn k for keeping up with the fasting result posts. It truly helps. I'll be taking taxotere, carboplatinum, and herceptin, 6x, 3 weeks apart and then herceptin 1x every 3 weeks to complete a full year. I have a port, which i want to scratch out of my skin! It makes me clostrophobic! They're saying tamoxifin for 5 years, but I'm not too accepting of that. We'll see.

Hi. Neecee, my steroids say to take with food as well. I asked my onc about the fasting and he said, "It couldn't hurt" or he said, "It couldn't hurt me." I really suggest that the ladies (and gents) to check with their oncologists prior to fasting.

I am drinking a ton of water. It is difficult to fast. Especially with a food cooking show going on in the background.

Mineral water helps me feel full.

I have been drinking a lot of water but am not sure exactly how much. I have been a hot water drinker for about 10 years since I figured out tea was the cause of my migraines and gave it up. In addition to the hot water, I drink carbonated water and regular filtered water. I'm guessing at least 2-3 litres a day. I know that when I pass water it has almost no colour so I must be hydrated.

I had a banana around midnight last night and then started what will be my 62 hour pre chemo fast.

This afternoon, I had my hair cut with number one clippers. I couldn't stand all of the falling hair anymore. I could see bald areas once it was cut down. I am wearing one of the chemo beanies that I ordered online. It's great. I think I will order a couple more.

Good luck to everyone doing chemo this week!

Hi All! It is Monday evening here and I am doing a 50 hour fast this time - I hope that it is as effective. I have a low blood count and still very fatigued following a virus during week 2.post tx so trying to be reasonable!

Nicolgirl it is a good idea to be safe and check with your MO before fasting! Drinking adequately is important- be guided by your body as drinking too much water can be a health hazard too when you are not taking in enough electrolytes to balance fluid intake! I drink water, mineral water, green black tea, coffee and diet soda for variety while fasting~ 2 liters per day. I make sure I drink 3 liters per day once infused to flush it all out over the next two days at least!

Cyborg- I don't take steroids pre Tx , I get an infusion of steroids just before the 'good' stuff and then dexamethasone tablets for 2 days post tx. I am doing FEC - last one tomorrow and then taxotere x 3 where I will get steroids pre tx I believe. While fasting If needing to take tablets with food to preserve the stomach I would take a fibre gel supplement like metamucil with the tablets.

Gotta go to bed and grow some blood cells! fingers crossed my blood count is better in the morning!

    (((Take care everyone))) Robyn

Like Robyn, I get steroids at the treatment room (orally) just before the chemo drugs. I am given a script for Zofran (Ondansetron) and Reglan (Metoclopramide) to take in the 2-3 days to follow.

I am am scheduled for blood tests today and meet with the oncologist. If all is well, I will be in the chair for tx 2 of FEC tomorrow.

Great idea about metamucil tablets. I take steroid tabs day before and day after. I take no tabs the day of infusion cause it's in the infusion. Didn't sleep at all last night.

Wow, that is an interesting research article about fasting.  I fasted a couple of times while receiving chemo but only because I wanted to as a spiritual discipline along with praying.  When I mentioned fasting to my oncologist, he was alarmed and said that I should not fast while on chemo so I stopped.  Thanks for sharing this.

I hope you find something delicious to eat to celebrate, Cyborg! :) You gals are doing so great! You are doing a great job of preparing me to actually sit in the chair and do this. Hang in there! My kids are so curious about me losing my hair, my little boy has said he will shave his head with me.  I keep reassuring them that I am less concerned about my hair than what impact these drugs will have on my insides. (Which is why I am fasting!) I love this forum, it has made me think about you all each day! We all have a little cheering section going on here! Laughing

I need to clarify something.....I do not tell my little boy about what these drugs are doing to the inside of my body......I want him to know that losing my hair is not a big deal to me, it's just part of the process of healing my body.

I just didn't want anyone thinking that I am traumatizing my children!

I have been fasting for 61 hours so far and have my chemo #2  in just over an hour.  Last time I fasted only 48 hours before chemo and found it much easier to cope without food.  I am feeling a bit cranky and fixated on eating this time around.  Hopefully, like last time, I will not have much of an appetite following the chemo treatment so that I can make it 24 hours of fasting after chemo.

Another woman I know going through the exact same chemo treatment plan as me but a week behind, did not fast and she is in extreme pain due to mouth and gum sores.  She has also broken out in itchy red spots on her body and has felt terrible for almost two weeks since her chemo.  I don't know if fasting would have helped her but if I had to choose between the fasting and the pain, I would definitely choose the fasting.  So I should stop complaining right?

Take care to all of you!
