Thanks, Tina.  I just wish I had gone earlier.  I just thought the radiated skin was doing something weird.  Infection didn't even enter my mind this far out, not until it got really bad.  My BS (whom I have complete faith in) seemed pretty confident that warm compresses and draining 3 times a day along with the antibiotics would nip it.  Hopefully he's right!

Nowords: It sounds like you are doing fantastic!  That is so great to hear!  We are so in love with our surgeons - it is so great to hear that those women that follow us have the same wonderful experience.  Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Brenda:  Hope you are home and having a good recovery.

Kimber:  Glad to hear you found out what is wrong and are on the road to recovery.

Sandy:  Are you really up next??????  Boy, the months really did fly by!!!!  What will you have done (and is this really your very last surgery?).   What did you decide on the plication?

All is good here.  My DH just landed a new job after being unemployed for a year, so we are beyond thrilled (he is back at the same corporation with me, where we both started 25 years ago).  Looks like I will have to officially reschedule my surgery now until 2012 - which is fine - hopefully I can get everything finished in 2012.  I have also ditched the Spanx most of the time now - and do seem to be getting used to no compression.  (Anne - you responded that is was gravity that I was feeling - and that is exactly it!!!! No problem when I am sitting or in bed - just when I am walking around.  I guess my body just has to get used to the new shape.

     Take care! Liz

Liz, I am next!  I have not decided on plication yet...going to let the expert, Dr. M, make the decision!  I will have scar revision, tatts, maybe some removed from the upper pole of my breast, and some fat injected in the side of my breast where the fat neurosis dissolved, and lipo, lipo, and more lipo!!!!  This is it!  Sorta bittersweet...wish someone from our thread would be there at the same time, but I guess that is not going to happen.

Glad you have got your surgery scheduled...Ashley has been great to work with so far!  I cannot believe you finally got rid of the Spanx.  I think you win the award for wearing Spanx the longest...I am going to tell Dr. M she needs to give you some type of award...LOL!!!!

    Kimber...how are things going???

HEY Gang, I'm home!  Thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers. My experience was wonderful and I would do it all again.  Surgery was on May 25th.  All drains except for one were taken out before I left.  I feel like it will come out within a week.  This morning I am feeling great and may even go shopping for a little bit.  I'm still a little tight feeling, and I'm sleeping a lot, but I feel great and can walk straight up.  I'm looking forward to stage II.  Please feel free to ask any questions about my procedure.  I'm sorry this is brief, but I have to help my sister get the house ready for a party tonight.  Take care~Brenda

Wow, Sandy, you're a week away! Charleston should be beautiful for you!

Brenda, glad that you're doing so well! Keep moving, but listen to your body and get rest, too. You don't know you've overdone it till you overdid it!!

Spanxless Liz! Whoo hoo! I know I should have stayed in mine longer, but hot flashes just seemed to dictate that...

SAMayoFL--  You're in great hands with Dr. Kline.  He is truly a very caring person and talented surgeon.  I just had a final "touch up" with him and, if I must say so myself, I look pretty amazing!  I can't wait to hear about your experience in August.

By the way all-- I saw Brenda a about 6 or 7 days after surgery and she looked fanatastic.

     Brenda-- don't overdo!

Just finished radiation a few weeks ago and I start seeing the PS next week. Had BMX in Jan with TE's following chemo.

I change my mind about every 10 minutes about what type of recon to have. My PS told me I am not a candidate for TRAM due to not enough tissue ( although I see plenty everywhere I look below the waist!). And I don't think I want abdominal surgery anyway. Sometimes, I think I want a TUG. Other times, I think micro fat grafting, like that being done in Miami, is the way to go. Sometimes, I think maybe I should just go with implants. I've pretty much eliminated the fat grafting. So I am left with the other 2 options. I'd rather not have implants, but also don't want to have more scars and more loss of sensation than I already have from MX (and previous lumpectomy, reduction, and lift). Then there's that lovely port scar.

Anyway, I have 3 questions for you lovely ladies that have been to Charleston:

How did you decide to have flap surgery VS implants, how did you decide between Charleston and NOLA, and did anyone have/experience any return of sensation/transfer of nerve tissue as is mentioned on their website?

Any help is greatly appreciated. My local PS is not a microsurgeon and I don't think he's giving me all the options.

Thanks to all of you, I continue to learn so much from this community!

Pinkbutterfly, I can answer a couple of questions but not so much others as my stage 1 is set for August 3.  There were two deciding factors for choosing the DIEP flap reconstruction.  First, the thought of a tummy tuck is a real plus for me!!  I have lost about 50 pounds and have ended up with some loose skin that creats a muffin top in all of my clothes.  I have to admit that a major factor for me was getting rid of the muffin top.  Also, I am BRCA+.  My chances of recurrence are quite high.  I didn't want implants because detecting a recurrence behind an implant is more difficult.  Having said that, however, if I do have a local recurrence after DIEP I will be pretty ticked off about losing my DIEP breasts.  I had a mastectomy in September, 2010 and I have not had any return of sensation on my breast or on the back of my arm.

Better-Body, thank you so much for that information.  I am thrilled to hear good news about Drs. Kline and Craigie.  Brenda told me about your visit.  She said you look WONDERFUL!!!

Pink Butterfly- it's a shame that plastic surgeons who don't perform microsurgery won't explain it as an option. New York actually passed a law that women must be informed of all available options. As to all of your questions and concerns, I recommend that you call Dr. Kline. I know he will talk with you and make sure you have all of the information you need to make an informed decision. And he's super nice, too. You can call Gail, the office manager who can hook you up with Dr. Kline. Their number is 843-849-8418. Keep us posted!

Hey Pinkbutterfly, actually better-body has a great suggestion.  My husband and I actually did just that.  He was totally against the DIEP surgery as he felt like I have been through enough this past year.  Dr. Kline told us about implants and the DIEP surgery.  He was a great resource.  At the end of the conversation my husband told me to book the surgery.

    Best of luck!

    SAMayoFl-

My husband too is strongly advocating for the implants as he does not want me to go through more invasive surgery, but he said he will support my decision, whatever it is. Just hoping for no regrets!

Did you have any persistent numbness or loss of sensation at the donor site? This is one of the things I am worried about, as I am really struggling with losing sensation of my breasts. I want to have some feeling left somewhere in my body!

    Thanks.

Pinkbutterfly, I totally feel your pain!  I had a right mastectomy and I am numb all the way around the incision, into my armpit and the back of my arm.  It's been 9 months and I have not regained any sensation.  I don't know about the tummy incision because my surgery is scheduled for August 9.

Good luck with making your decision!

Spoke with Dr Kline yesterday. He really seems to be everything you ladies said he was, stayed on the phone patiently answering all my questions. Learned more from him on this phone call than from my PS, who actually gets paid to give me advice. I learned that TE's are not helpful when you want to have flap surgery, and can make things more difficult by creating concavity in the chest wall which then needs more tissue to be filled. He advised me not to go for fills, which I was starting next week. REALLY glad I called. Perfect example of 'what you don't know can hurt you.' Guess my PS was setting me up for implants, and here I thought I was still in control of my destiny. Sent him some pictures, can't wait to hear what he says. Although, looking at those pictures, I see plenty of donor sites. Yikes!

Pinkbutterfly, having just had my implants removed and no further recon, I can verify that the expanders created concavity on both sides of my chest. Dr. Massey said this was the cause. Good luck to you with Dr. Kline!

Sorry to hear that you had problems. Sounds like you are at peace with your decision, which is the most important thing.

PinkButterfly, I had that same experience with Dr. Kline.  He was so kind to me.  I was really fragile too because my DH was so against this surgery.  Dr. Kline told us about all of our options.  He told us the pros and the cons for both surgeries and I felt like I was much more informed at the end of the conversation.

I want to add one more thing too.  Brendaclee just had her bi-lateral surgery with Drs. Kline and Craigie and Dr. Baron did her mastectomy.  That is the same team that will do my surgery.  She said the hospital is beautiful and they treated her like royalty.  She had all wonderful things to say about her team and the hospital.  I know she would love to talk to you and tell you anything you want to know.  PM her if you want.

This is such a personal decision.  I wish you all the best and please let us know what you decide!

Thanks, SAMayoFL. that is good to know. I had a not-so-great experience with the hospital where I had my mastectomies.

I also talked with Ashley, Dr. Massey's assistant today, and she had a different take on the TE's and expansion - said I should probably go ahead with it ( so my PS is somewhat redeemed in my eyes, I guess there is some subjectivity in this "art"). Will be having a phone consultation with her next week.

What I really want to do is go to Miami and have FG with Dr. K, but a trailblazer I am not! I look at my kids and think, this is all just peripheral, don't want to take any risks. Just want to feel whole again!

pinkbutterfly--You will love Dr.Massey as well after your phone consult. She makes everyone feel like a best freind!! We are so blessed to have many great Docs to choose from in Charleston.

To answer an earlier question....I had bilateral DIEP and didn't have any nerve regeneration or regain sensation. The breasts are totally numb, but they feel very real, warm and soft. The abdominal scar from hip to hip has no sensation probably 2 inches above and below it.  I've gotten pretty used to it now 8  months out, but I do miss it, sexually. BUT, I would do this surgery again in a heartbeat. I feel wonderful and very pleased. Good luck to all of you just starting this restoration part of the journey!

Pinkbutterfly~I started with implants about 12 years ago and lost all sensation in my right breast.  That breast always looked terrible, so after all these years, I now had the DIEP two weeks ago.  I'm very happy.  It's not easy surgery, but every day gets better. It's wonderful to touch my breasts and feel the warmth that I never felt before with implants.  Dr. Kline is a genius.  I had to have reconstruction three times with implants because there were so many problems.  Now I have my own tissue back and I feel normal again.  I even have cleavage and haven't even been through stage II yet.  None of my other plastic surgeons in the past ever told me about my options.  Good luck to you.

Hi Jacee~I have just finished my first stage DIEP and wondered about the stomach incision.  I'm not in pain, but the skin below and above the stomach scar is very tight and uncomfortable.  The feeling reminds me of the feeling one would have during a major sunburn.  Did you or anyone else reading have this?  How long did it last?  Other than that feeling, I'm feeling great, but sleeping a lot and being a bum.  Never knew I loved chocolate ice cream so much Laughing.

    Hi Susan,

Hi Susan, how are you?  I'm lounging around the house watching old movies and eating ice cream.  I'm sooo glad I have the whole summer off.  I'm feeling fine, but sleeping a lot.  The only discomfort I have is a tight feeling on top and bottom of the stomach scar that feels like a sunburn.  Yesterday I spent the day with my little nieces, went out to lunch, went shopping, and danced by the pool with them.  Today I'm paying for it. Hahaha.  I've been on the sofa most of the day watching TV and eating chocolate icecream.  I know what the other ladies mean now when they say you have good days and bad days after DIEP.  I wouldn't call this a bad day, but I won't be dancing today. I walked around the block this morning, but it was a struggle (too hot) and I'm still tight around the middle.  I'm going to stay in and be a couch potato for the rest of the day.  Call if you'd like.

    Jacee,

Glad to hear you are happy with your DIEP. It is so unfortunate that we have to give up another piece of ourselves to have natural looking and feeling breasts. I'm not sure I understood how difficult reconstruction would be when I decided on mastectomy. Maybe that's a good thing.

    Brendaclee3,

Sorry you had so much trouble! Dr Massey's website was the first place I'd read (just yesterday) that 50% of impants fail within 7 years. It's really helpful for me to know that, having gone through both, you are happy with the DIEP. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    Brendaclee,

Yes, my abdominal area still feels tight at times. Especially so when I turn over on my side while sleeping. It is getting less and less as time passes. Listen to your body, as you've found out, it WILL tell you when you've overdone it.  I haven't done a whole lot of stretching, and I'm sure that would help, but after you've healed up a bit.

And chocolate ice cream is a great reward for having gone through DIEP!!!

Pinkbutterfly - I'm almost 10 weeks out from my DIEP I actually still have almost all of the sensation above my scar right down into the scar itself, other than the very middle where my old belly button was. So far, though, there is very little for 1-3 inches below the scar and one strange numb spot in the middle of my upper thigh - very weird. I hate that I've got more numb spots and even more coming up, but I hated strapping on that prosthesis every day much, much more.

Brenda - I've still got a little of that "sunburned" feeling along much of my scar, but less so as time passes.

Sandy - I'm doing much better, thanks! I saw my BS Monday and he said it looks much better and just to keep doing what I'm doing and finish the course of antibiotics. I follow up with Dr. M on Tuesday. How long are you staying in Charleston this time?

Jacee - I get a lot of slightly painful pulling in my hips when I try to sleep on my side.  I'm thinking I need to get back into yoga - sooner rather than later.

    Thanks Kimber3006.

Not knowing much about surgery before this all happened, I had this mistaken notion that plastic surgery was more advanced than it really is. You hear so much about facial surgeries, cosmetic tummy tucks, etc, never once considered that scarring and permanent numbness could and did occur.

Great to know these things in advance, so thanks for sharing your experience.
