Radiation with One Kidney

Options

Do I need to worry about radiation with one kidney?  I have just been diagnosed with 'Invasive Ductal Carcinoma' and I have one kidney from previous cancer surgery.  I am very concerned about radiation effects on my surviving healthy kidney.  Any help?

Thanks...Mary

Mary, the field of radiation for bc is not near the kidney. If you are concerned, speak to your onc and ask what the field is.

    Best of luck.

Although I have both my kidneys, I often recommend that others look into the type of radiation I had, which is called Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT). You get only one dose of radiation right in the tumor bed, and there's a much lower possibility of radiation "scatter" with this method. So internal organs (heart, lungs, ribs) are generally better protected. There's also no possibility of radiation "sunburn."

You can learn about this type of radiation at http://www.breastcanceriort.org/
