I am such a slug now, and my only aerobic activity as of late has been shopping!  Since I can't get motivated to even walk around the block I thought it might be time to get back to some group activity. I need to be accountable and paying for a group class seems to have worked best for me in the past. Prior to BC and LE I was really into martial arts.  Am I crazy to go back????  Should I do a dance class instead (I have 2 left feet so I would be waaayyy in the back and really screwing up.)  I feel so fragile....like I need training wheels to do anything physical again.  UGHHHH I hate LE, but I just can't let it define my life from now on.  Any advice?

Journey - come join us on the "Let's Post Our Daily Exercise" thread in the Fitness section.  All you do is post whatever exercise you do each day - it might be as little as a 10 minute walk around the block or 5 minutes on the treadmill, or it might be hiking, a body combat class, yoga, ellipticalling, even gardening!

It's a fun group and we all encourage each other to get moving - and something about having to post each day really helps keep you accountable.  Some posters are still in active treatment, others have been out of active treatment for years, some of us have LE or s/es from AIs, some of us have other physical issues, but everyone there is supportive, no matter what you can or cannot do, no matter whether you are gym rat or never did any exercise in your entire life.  It may be some of the accountability you need to get moving, even just to get you off the couch and doing that walk around the block.  Today.  As a matter of fact, log off and get out and start walking right now!  Laughing

(See how that worked to make you feel like you had to do something today??)

Check out the thread for more encouragement - newbies are welcome at any time.

Hi Journey!  I hear you - this rainy spring has kept me on the couch too for far too long.  When I started LE therapy last fall my therapist had me doing the LE exercises (I felt like a little old lady doing them, but they really worked!!).  Then he gave me thera-bands, which I love, and the workout has really toned my arms.  Then he had me start some core strenghening exercises - leg lifts and the like.  Anyway, I now feel great and my strength is pretty much back to where it was pre-BC, if not better.  Best of all I can do them in the comfort of my home, and if the sun EVER shines again I'll be able to resume my walks.  I'm sure your LE person can steer you in the right direction and suggest activities that will challenge you but not aggravate the LE.  Cheers!

Journey I hear you too. Depression can creep in so easily with this wretched BC and LE, but remind yourself that exercise turns calories and flab into endorphins and curves, you KNOW it makes sense! I don't know much about martial arts, although i did find the idea of stamping on any loose pre-secondary cells was a very helpful visualisation. But i can tell you're a fighter! We can do this.

Stand up. Well done. Sit down, relax, count five, repeat: Thank you Lord because I am not a slug, stand up again. (Slugs cannot stand up). Great! Now walk over to the music box machine of your choice (radio MP3 DVD whatever, even your nan's jewellery box will do!) and put on some snazzy music. Nobody else in the room to see you fall over, so have fun. There are probably no hidden cameras in your lounge, but dance like there is. Slugs cannot dance.. See you in half an hour...... next time change into something you can move in, but don't bother to do that the first time round or you will never get started.

I pay for the gym too because i know the financial aspect will make sure i do something at least twice a week but its not enough.

Journey I see you are in Atlanta GA. On another thread a lady just moved there from Texas and having a rough time, is looking to connect with other survivors, is there anything around you could recommend, any groups etc? She is kelleymac0 and her thread is here: http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/102/topic/769350

@alex56, be very wary of thera-bands, I have heard they can make LE worse.

Thank y'all! Natsfan thanks for the invite to join...I may do just that. Hymil you are a hoot...made me laugh! BTW Kelley and I have now connected. Alex, I appreciate the words of advice.

I talked to my weight trainer today who is a survivor and she is encouraging me to look into zumba classes. I am trying to talk my older sister to try it with me so we'll see.

Oh, Zumba is SO much fun! I am glad you did it! You know, you can always register for an event - that always gets me moving. A 5k, a 10K, a ride, a triathlon... whatever! I think it is easier to motivate when you have a goal!
