Brain MRI Results,(scared)
Got a call from my onc.today,I didn't want to call before weekend,I don't think she did either.A 5mm nodule was found, she doesn't know if it is cancer or an anomoly, that I could have been born with. She said that is the size of a period.I now have an appt. June 27 for another mri to see if it changed,I guess, and a PET scan. Then the next day to see her.I had a PET scan 2 years ago,and all was clear, wouldn't that have shown then?Do you think I am reading into this too much?Help!!

Hi Anna,
Many times very small lesions do not show up on Pet Scans. None of my 12 nodes showed up on my pre tx PET. and I had 3 that were totally encased with BC. so do not fret about that.
Also, a 5 mm dot does not necessarily mean anything. Drs have to check out ANY abnormalities and if there is any growth on your next MRI then it would be an area of concern.
I would not be too worried about this however.
Your Onc is being diligent.which is good.
I will keep you in my prayers that you receive " all Clear" soon.
-
Wish I knew more about this so I could be more helpful. Can only reach out with all good wishes and a (((((((((hug)))))))). Praying for the all clear.
-
Your lesion could be something benign so hang in there!! I had two lesions about 5-8mm and they didn't have a doubt they were mets....I think it's good they aren't sure what they are. If it is a bc lesion, then take a deep breath and know this is just another blip in the road! I had mine treated almost 2 years ago with SRS and I'm still going strong. If you met me, you'd never know! Also, the founder of her2support.org had brain mets treated 10 years ago....and there are many others like her. There is always hope!! I'll be sending you benign wishes :>
-
Anna, I'm so sorry you're going through this. It stinks. Sending prayers for you. As Lisa said, it is a hopeful sign the doc isn't sure!

Sending hugs and prayer your way. Hopeing its b9

((((((((((((((((((((((Hugs))))))))))))))...wishing you only good news on the other tests...
-
I agree with the other ladies, PET doesn't always pick up everything, which in your case could mean the spot was there before and wasn't picked up. So, I will pray that you get GOOD news this month!

Hugs and prayers going your way.

So sorry you are going through this stress. If the doc is willing to wait a month, she must think it could be benign.
Did you have a brain scan 2 years ago? I'll also 3C and received every scan at my dx except brain.
-
Brain scans are not normally given to er positive girls. I would agree if there willing to wait a whole month they don't sound that concerned. I would INSIST on doing it sooner unless your ok with waiting a whole month:) Hang in there!
-
Thank You for all your good wishes and your thoughts.
Clariceak...I didn't have a brain scan 2 years ago,but I had a pet scan before surgery, all was clear,I assumed that also covered my brain.
Pure..She doesn't know what it is ,I guess she is waiting to see if there is a change, also I feel she may be well concerned, since she wants me to also have a PET.I feel fine,so I will just wait,on pins and needles.
Does anyone know what the difference between a nodule and a lesion are??
-
Lesion and nodule are the same when referring to Imaging modalities.
-
Anna - PET scans only go from your upper forehead down, so chances are the area where the blip is has never been scanned before. I'm 3 years into my Stage IV diagnosis and no one has ever mentioned my brain (they probably think I don't have one). I know that if I start having vision problems or headaches or other symptoms, a brain MRI will be ordered. Keeping my fingers crossed for you that nothing shows up on the MRI!
-
Ok. Well at least you know that the blip may have been there before, since this was your first brain mri. I never understood why headaches were so worrisome to your onc, but it sounds like she wants to keep very close tabs on you, Since you don't have any symptoms, I would try to put this to the back of your mind as much as possible. Good luck.
-
Take a deep breath and try to relax. Don't let cancer rob the month of June from you!
You said you feel fine and that the headaches are just the usual. That says a lot. But the onc still has to pursue it with scans to verify that she is doing her job. She sounds like a conscientious onc who doesn't want to regret not having followed up on an issue. And she also wants to minimize the wait time by having you come in right after the scans are done so she can give you the results.
She's probably adding the PET because she expects the MRI to not show any growth. The PET is useful for catching cancerous cells before they easily seen as a mass on an MRI or CT because it can show the high glucose activity that accompanies cancer cells. Unfortunately, though, they can show a lot of false positives so they are usually used as a secondary scan. So the scenario could very well be that the MRI shows no change and the PET confirms that there is no extraordinary glucose activity so it's not cancer.

What I do know about ILC is it prefers to travel to the ovaries and abdomen before anywhere else. Amig1 - I'm saying a prayer for you and I feel confident that it will come back as nothing to be concerned about.
We're all here for you. It's scary when we hear about anything showing on any scans. I'm with AnacortesGirl....I'm feeling false positive.
Hugs,
Kat
