HCG Diet???
Is anyone familiar with this diet? Both my cousin and my sister-in-law are doing this diet and I'm watching them literally melt. Does anyone know if it's safe for us? They are both doing homeopathic hcg drops combined with a low calorie high protein diet. My cousin lost 35 lbs in 40 days and my SIL lost 30 lbs in a month. I'm so jealous, but I'm afraid to try it. I took a bottle with me to my oncology appointment but I forgot to ask her about them. Next appointment isn't for six months. Just wondering if anyone here knows about this and if it's safe?
Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I haven't mastered "search".

Hi,
I am not an expert on this diet but my sister-in-law did "melt away" on this diet, it was amazing to see. However the cost prohibited her from staying on it and she gained it back just as quickly. What it comes down to if you actually look at the plan is there is about 500 calories a day on this plan and any plan that you only eat 500 calories in a day is going to make you lose weight and fast. This article talks about the diet. http://health.yahoo.net/experts/dayinhealth/is-the-hcg-diet-a-risky-fad
My theory is most any diet works if you stick to it.

Hello Lynn, cant say i,ve heard of it. What does HCG stand for ? All i no is that one has to be careful with a high protein diet, as it can be very taxing to the kidneys. That sounds like a whole lot of weight in a very short time...
-
500 calories a day is a dangerously low level, isn,t ?
-
Thanks Cocopuff. Interesting article. I'm not sure about the cost being prohibitive. A friend in my cousin's church is selling the drops @ $30.00 per bottle. A bottle lasts about 21/2 weeks, so that seemed ok to me. I have heard the shots are really pricey though. Amazingly both my cousin and SIL said they were never hungry. I'm not sure what to believe. I've read that the drops cause your body to use your fat as food. But, you can't always believe what you read. That's why I'm hesitant. MY SIL did the diet for the whole month of January. She hasn't gained anything back and I'm often amazed at the junk she eats.
I'm just thinking, a month and I could get it over with!
-
Right Luan, Seems really low. My cousin stuck to it religiously. My SIL wasn't as good about the 500 calories. Even had a glass of wine from time to time. She works in a school and everyone is watching everyone else melt the lbs and they are all signing up.
-
Sorry, forgot to add. My cousin took the drops and the diet to her doctor before she started it. Her dr went over the diet and told her it was ok for 2 weeks as long as she came back so she could check her at the end of two weeks. After two weeks, the doctor was so impressed that she told her she could do it for the 40 days. Her 40 days was up on Thursday. The doctor told her to stay off the diet for 6 weeks and then she could start another round. I'm just not sure if it would be safe for someone with a history of bc. However, my oncologist did tell me that weight is definitely a factor in bc. Just wish I'd thought to ask her about it.

Lynn, are there not other diets that are not so drastic, like the Meditteranian diet with lots of fruits and veggies and small fish and nuts and seeds, just basically healthy eating which anyone in recovery would need. Our bodies have been through hell and need to be well nourished, it,s work, i have to admit, easier said than done, but worth it in the end as we rebuild our health

The HCG diet is basically injecting yourself with the pregnancy hormone while eating 500 calories a day. It. Is. NOT. Safe. Yes, people lose crazy weight. They also lose crazy weight with anorexia.
-
My friend went on the HCG diet last year. She did the hormonal shots prescribed by a MD. She had adily injections of HCG and followed the diet. She lost 40 lbs within 6 weeks. She just did round 2, andlost another 20 LBS. Its been one year for her and she eats normally now, not all the junk she used to eat though and has kept off the wieght. At her MDs office, they have not had anyone be unsuccessful on this. Its expensive though. The shots were 700dollars. Its the same HCG in your body with pregnancy but a mucgh smaller percent. Dr. Oz had a show on it and a big time cardiologist and columbia presbyterian was on it. He said the risk of taking the shots vs his being obese were far lower and so he followed the program and was a success.
I would like to try it too but havn't jumped in yet. I dont know anyone who took the drops.
-
Hi Lynh I did the HCG, I was just about at my goal weight when I was diagnosed with BC. I lost 30 lbs in about 4 weeks. I did the shots and was feeling really good about myself. I have now put back on 12 as of this morning since diagnosis but thats not really a good judge seeing as we are steriod queens right. Very depressing though knowing I have to loose this all over again. I didnt feel hungry at all on the diet you gorge so ridiculously for the first 3 days prior to starting the injections that you cant wait to stop eating its crazy. As for it being safe I dont know, I am scared that I might have triggered something in my body but I dont think my cancer would have come on that fast but who knows I am triple neg so maybe. If my Oncologist ok'd it I would do it again but only if he does other wise I will just do it the slow way. Really both work its just the HCG is so quick and we do live in a world that we like quick fixes. If you have any questions I would be happy to answer them the best I can.

Thanks so much Kymn,
We sure live in a world where we expect instant everything. 30 lbs in 30 days sounds great. I'd be at goal and ready for summer.
I know everyone is right about eating healthy and losing weight the right way. I get that. Most of us get that. I promise myself that each morning. Each morning is the same thing. Damn. Unfortunately, it comes back to the instant thing. A lb or two a week or 30 lbs in a month! The diet obviously works. I would have never believed it if I hadn't seen it for myself. My SIl asked me what harm the drops could do for only 30 days, but I'm still afraid.
12 lbs isn't bad. It's much better than 30 lbs, right? You'll do it Kymn.

I hope so Lynh I hate struggling with my weight it really stresses me out and the last think I need is more stress. Make sure you check with ONC first though as this is a hormone injections and we really have to be so careful. Let me know what you decide

HCG is human chorionic gonadotropin. Pretty much the exact opposite of taking lupron shots to shut down you ovaries, instead HCG would stimulate them (or testis in men). The idea has been around for a long time, but my understanding is that it didn't stand up well in a proper clinical trial that was conducted. I'm also not sure about any homeopathic HCG drops, as HCG would be destroyed by the digestive system and that is why it is done subcutaneously. Perhaps the drops are intended as a sublingual mode of absorption and overcome that shortcoming.
So I would say weaknesses in this approach are: 1) No proof it (HCG) aids weight loss or preservation of muscle mass 2) No proof non pharmaceutic versions actually contain HCG 3) Safety issues in stimulating ovaries in breast cancer patients 4) Safety of severe caloric restriction 5) ability to maintain weight loss requires sustainable changes in behavior.
Steroid using bodybuilders have been using HCG for decades to restore hormonal function after steroid abuse. I've never heard of HCG aiding fat loss or maintaining lean mass during dieting, and they as a group would take just about anything into their bodies if it helped lose fat or gain muscle.
Consider that if women w. BC take Lupron or have oophorectemies to reduce estrogen production, HCG is the direct opposite move.
Rather than just be negative, let me throw something out there. The Pritikin diet. Get a copy from your local library and take a read. It's nothing flashy, but something you can maintain for a lifetime. He advocated what most of us recognize as a healthy diet, low fat, non-starchy vegetables, bulky foods, low to moderate protein, avoiding calorically dense foods.
-
Thanks so much Timothy. It really doesn't sound like the diet would be a safe choice for someone with a history of BC. I emailed my oncologist but haven't heard back from her yet. I'll check out the Pritkin diet. I haven't heard of that one before.

I would think it would make a big difference if you were ER/PR+, which I am. Just a thought.

It just doesn't sound intrinsically safe, and so far off the path of natural, injecting or otherwise flooding yourself daily with a gonodotropin, a powerful hormone that stimulates gonad activity. How often do actions like that turn out to be healthy? The body employs what is known as homeostasis, a system of regulation that tends to seek normalicy and set points. Daily stimulation with HCG, something that is unnatural, could have an effect of temporary or permanent desensitiziation to natural HCG your body produces.
-
Just something to think about - I am not advocating, but sharing: The amount of HCG injected is a minute level of the amount normally found in pregnancy and as fasr as I have been informed does not stimulate estrogen production due to the very low level of HCG used. I recall seeing a Doctor Oz show where a well known Cardiologist at Columbia Presb noted he took it as the impact on his health from being obese vs being on the HCG shots was far more troubling.aND this was a respected cardiologist. I would only seek information from a Dr specialiszing in this tx vs anything on-line to ensure proper protocol and hormones.

.....................Hi Ladies.............I was on this diet years ago..........back then it was just done by a specialist in weight loss..........it cost me $10.00 a day to go to this guy, he injected it into your hip area. The only day you didn't go was Sunday...............you stayed on a 500 calorie diet..........I lost 31 lbs in less then 4 weeks, looked fantastic.......people didn't even know me who had not seen me for a while................now the down side...............
My GP told me anyone could lose that kind of weigh staying on a 500 calorie diet..........he thought it was not safe (of course did not listen to him)..........................he told me I was losing muscle mass along with the fat which was dangerous..............................after stopping.......I put the weight back on once I began eating normally (not even over-eating)...................and put it on in places I had never had it before (middle stomach area).........................I would never do this again or advise anyone to do it...............it is dangerous, regardless of what the Dr. who went on Dr. Oz, and claimed he is fine says........................would not do it.
-
sounds totally unnatural to me.
-
Thanks, Timothy, for some sanity on this one. And yes, apple, this diet sounds the opposite of natural.
Of course you lose weight like crazy at 500 cals a day. The shots sound like someone's idea of a get-rich scheme; if you're only eating 500 cals a day, you're going to lose weight, with or without shots.
The basic recipe for weight loss will always be the same: eat less*, exercise more. Simple. Easy, not always. But simple, and healthy, and sustainable. And... pretty natural.
I know many of us face extra weight challenges post-BC but there's no magic bullet out there to get rid of the weight.
Good luck to us all in our quest to be healthy!
*(and ideally, healthy, and despite what you might believe from the media, most health organizations and dietitians have the same general idea on what that is)

Hey Lyn, I lost about 35 pounds last year and was really struggling with losing the last 20 pounds. I started the HCG diet and lost 14 pounds. I was diagnosed with BC on day 18 of 30. I paid $350 for the diet so I was ticked when my GP and onc. promptly kicked me off the diet. There were a group of us doing the diet together. I will say that of the 10 or so people who did the diet with me, none of us have maintained the weight loss. As much as it stinks, a healthy diet and excercise routine is probably a better option both for cancer patients and for good health in general.

Thanks Guys, You've helped me make up my mind. As tempting as it is to watch everyone's lbs melt, it doesn't seem like a good choice. I try to listen to my inner voice and it's been telling me "no" since January.
-
Lynh...........good decision............it works while you stay on it, but don't try going off............it is a scam..................
