mouth moisterizer

I'd like to make a mouth moisterizer that I can store in the freezer and use at night to deal with dry mouth, like Biotin.

I'm thinking that an emulsion of coconut oil, a few drops of peppermint oil, an antiseptic flavored oil like ____________, glycerin (if one can eat that or some other emulsifier,) and water would work.

Have any of you tried any solutions of this type or have any suggestions?  Biotin is so expensive.

I will nasal irrigate AM and PM and that will help.

Thanks for your help!

Gee, if there was only a good, cheap treatment for dry mouth...we'd be rich!  The Biotene IS expensive.  CVS, though, just came out with a generic....so if you find it...and it's on sale and you have a coupon...you can really save yourself a bundle.

My husband has really bad dry mouth from his meds.  The best thing to do is hydrate all day long.  Also, he started sucking on Ricola lemon drops.  The doctor told him to look for anything with lemon because that stimulates the saliva.

Also, there's a tiny humidifer on the market.  I bought one from CVS, but I saw a "travel" one at Walmart.  All you do is attach a bottle of water to the top of it.  The DH keeps it on his bedside table and runs it during the night.  Is it perfect?  Nah.  But it reduces the number of times he has to wake up during the night and rinse.

One of my nurses suggested eating pineapple or mango.  Apparently there's an enzyme in them that helps get rid of dry, kind of stringy spit (gross, but I think you know what I mean).from a dry mouth.

I like the idea of pineapple or mango for the enzymes, as Biotin has a mixture of animal-derived enzymes as well as plant-derived (at least to the best of my ability to determine when I checked the ingredients for Biotin). It is very difficult to find animal-friendly products for treating cancer and the side effects of cancer treatment, but I stay on the lookout for them!

You may want to try Xylitol chewing gum or "Xylimelts for dry mouth", that are time release disks that adhere so you can use them overnight.

    Hi!

I drink pineapple juice (organic of course :-) ) since a couple of weeks, it really, really helps! Otherwise, I have a spray with pure vitamin E, works wonders too. My doc also said I could even use it 'down there' if needed.

    Good luck!!

This is very informative.  It would be great to find a natural solution.  I have dry mouth, I think mostly from meds. It has almost ruined all my teeth.  Thankfully I found an awesome dentist who fix them without costing me an arm & a leg like the last one did.  I couldn't afford him.  I will need to keep an eye on this thread.  NJ

    .

Can anybody explain what the underlying cause of dry mouth is? I haven't taken any meds. My mouth still feels dryish even when I'm hydrated.

MollyAnn, chemo's what made my mouth desertdry. I've noticed that sucking on mint bonbons helps too :-)
