Traveling after treatment

Options

Hello everyone,

I'm posting in this forum as it concerns going to an ayurvedic centre in India (maybe someone will be inspired), and my question is as follows:

I'm currently on Taxotere, have two more to go. Surgery in the end of July (lumpectomy) and radiation 5 weeks starting September. I was thinking about going to Kerala in the South of India the last week in November and stay three weeks. My goal is to eliminate toxins my body with natural treatments aswell as divine massages, enjoy the beauty of Kerala and the sea, and to concentrate on yoga and meditation..So it's not like I'm going trekking in Nepal!

Do any of you ladies have feedback concerning trips and holidays post treatment? Am I delirious wanting to travel a month and a half after radiation, or is it doable?

Thank you!

Carola, depending on how you handle your next 2 chemo infusions and the surgery & rads, I would think it should be do-able.  It sounds like you're sensible re. knowing you probably wouldn't be up to trekking in Nepal, so if the trip you're planning allows plenty of time for connections and very clean accommodations, I would think you'd be okay.  Sometimes after chemo & RT, it takes awhile for our immune systems to rebuild, so I'd certainly have your WBCs & RBCs checked before you expose yourself to anything like unsanitary conditions, which are prevalent in much of India.  And I don't think I'd book the trip until after rads, just to be sure you're feeling up to it.  But other than those concerns, I would think you'd be fine -- maybe more easily fatigued than normal, but nothing to keep you at home.

Sounds like a great trip!  Promise to let us know how it goes if you do it!   Deanna

Thank you Deanna for your answer! You're absolutely right concerning the immune system. I would very much like to go sooner than later as it is a great way to 'start fresh'. Of course I could wait til January...Decisions decisions ;-) Of course I'll keep you posted!

I think you will absolutely be able to go, and it sounds like a great way to mark the end of your treatment and give yourself a break.  50% of people get fatigue from radiation, which means 50% don't.  Exercise helps a lot to prevent the fatigue from radiation, so if you can do something, even just walk, it will help.

Talk to your doctors, of course.

Carola - you will probably handle rads better than those who do not have chemo. My rad onc said the chemo ladies tend to do quite well. I know I did better after chemo than the 2nd time when I hadn't had chemo. Have a great trip!!!

Thank you ladies for your encouraging words. Warms my heart.

That's exactly what we all need, Member, a break! Couldn't have said it better myself. Interesting what you're writing Sue, and great for me :-) Is it because we compare everything with chemo afterwards and/or that the bodies of non-chemo ladies are still 'virgin' treatment-wise thus having a harder time with SE's from rads? I'm curious how it will be..But, one step at a time!
