Any "fuller figure (or former) " warrior survivors out there?

Maybe I stored it in my butt and that's what's blocking everything!!

I need some place to *celebrate* that I have lost 36lbs since starting chemo on February 24. Yeah, yeah - I know. Losing weight on chemo is bad.
But 36lbs is awesome for me! I'm not missing that wieght at ALL. And I had it (and a lot more) to spare.
So, yeah - I'm happy!
However, my oncologist thinks I may have celiac disease. So that's stinky. But cutting out things like breads and pasta should help me lose weight in the long term. So maybe that's not a totally bad thing. My grandma, aunt and cousin have been gluten free for years so I know that it's a difficult lifestyle but doable.
Chemo is tearing up my GI system but I'm happy to have lost weight.
-
Congrats on the weight lost! However, sorry it's under these circumstances girl...and I'm sorry that the ugly head of celiac's may be hovering over you....
You sound like a "tough" cookie though!
Glad to have you here...please keep us up to date on you when you can... When is chemo over for you?
Take care,
Tori

Hello Ladies
Do you mind if I join you all?! I have about 60-80lbs to lose. I was dx about two years ago and I found it very difficult to lose weight on Tamoxifen. Last week I had a hysterectomy/oopherectomy and am recovering from that. However, I have had time to contemplate my navel and have determined I really need to lose the weight and get fit. Feeling the post surgery blahs today so sorry if the tone of this message seems down. I'll be back to my upbeat self shortly I am sure!
Many thanks ladies and I have enjoyed reading the recipes and tips!

Chemo is done for me on June 9. FIVE WEEKS from today - not that I'm counting or anything.
I'm planning to get out and walk tomorrow since the weather should be nice here. All it has done is RAIN for weeks.
Anyone here do rads? I'm wondering how my large breasts/body will do with all the rads. I'm really not looking forward to it at all. I'm a big baby when it comes to pain.
-
Hi Ladies! Room for another? I lost 70 pounds about three years before my diagnosis and was in the best shape of my life. Then cancer happened and I gained it all back in no time. I'm taking Tamoxifen and like kcl65 I just had a hysterectomy/oophorectomy. I decided today that I am finished being over weight. I know it will take me months and months to get back to where I was but starting this morning I'm now walking to/from work. Not that walking to work is too exciting, it is just a mile or so but just last month I had problems walking to my car so I have a start. I am the worst at having a bad day and rather than coming home, going walking, and eating well. I come home stressed, late, and run to the store for comfort food.
I lost the weight once but I was in a better mental place then.

Hi, ladies! I met a BC survivor a few days ago in my complex. She had a bilateral bx last year, and is soon going to have reconstruction. She is out walking every morning, and has a pedometer. She said that she felt like she had lost control with the diagnosis, and what she can control is her weight. She gets in 10,000 steps a day, the equivalent of about 5 miles. She said she built her strength up slowly from surgery, and has slowly added on the distance. She said you would be surprised how just moving around adds the steps up. If any of you are interested in the pedometer approach, I found an article about it.

Linda Lee, welcome!!! Walking to work is a great idea. You have been successful in dropping 70 lbs. before, and you can do it again!
Pejkug, hang in there! You're almost done. I went through rads, and it was mostly about fatigue and skin issues. You can buy pure aloe vera at a health store (Whole Foods, etc.) Some brands are misleading and will appear to be pure, but have alcohol in them, so read carefully the ingredients. The rad doc recommended Curel Ultra Healing Lotion, and I put this on after the aloe, after the tx. If you get queasy, ginger tea helps. Also, a 5 minute massage of rad area every day will help break up little bands of scar tissue.
I have been more active since the move, and I think I shed some inches from all the work. I can now wear my size 8 capris! Also, chasing after my son all over the parks here has helped.
My friend has introduced me to hummus. Sounds yucky, was delicious, and makes a great dip. It is made from chickpeas, and is high in protein and complex carbs. Another really healthy snack is fresh salsa and blue corn tortilla chips. You can get in some veggies and whole grains this way.
Hope you all are having a great day!
-
Hello All,
I hope everyone is doing well! Linda_Lee how is your recovery going? I am almost 4 weeks out and am finally beginning to feel myself. Like you I have been walking about 2 miles and yesterday I did it in 33 minutes. I'm going to add an additional mile starting tomorrow. Miss Bianca yay for getting into your size 8 capris and thanks for the snack and walking tips! I have been counting my points and am down 9 1/2lbs... yay!!
Have a wonderful day tomorrow!

Hi everyone, I have a whole person to lose! I liked me so much I decided to be two of me! lol. I have some serious weight loss to get to...I've gone radical and gone vegan for the low fat lower the risk of recurrence and to loss weight. I"m down 16 lbs in two months, I really thought it would melt off faster. My clothes seem a little looser but the scale doesn't move very quickly.
Pejkug3~ I'm on 17/33 rads, I have so many D's in my bra size it's insane....So far the skin is holding up ok. They are very concerned with the underneath of the breast that sits on the stomach skin, and of course the underarm. The RO gave me an RX for Radiogel and doesn't want me using anything unless he prescribes or gives to me. I use it three times a day, one of those times being immediately after radiation. Simulation is uncomfortable, but not painful. Holding my arms over my head gives me a little shoulder pain at the time, but goes away as soon as treatment is over - 10 minutes or so.
-
Hello Ladies
How is everyone doing? I had a bit of a setback in my recovery this weekend. Apparently I was doing too much, so I spent the weekend off my feet and am doing so much better. Gina LOL " I liked me so much I decided to be two of me!" I must read up about vegan, I know another gal who is doing that. She loves it!
Anyhow, I hope everyone is doing well!
-
Hi kcl65~ We've got to laugh through this don't we? Vegan wasn't as hard as I thought, lots of veggies and lots of beans, all kinds, who knew there were so many!
-
What does "size 8" mean? I don't know what that is...
I like the line from Drew Carey where Mimi looks at the Drew 'double' and says "So much shit they had to make a second pile!" LOVE it!!! That's me!!
I haven't weighed myself but thought I was losing until I had to have anaesthetic 10 days ago....sigh. I'm actually UP 5 pounds more than I thought!! I truly believe with me it is water as it was my bladder they were working on.
-
You ladies crack me up!
I'm at that point in my diet where I don't eat anything but still gain weight. I know to stick with it and I'll start losing weight again but it sure is discouraging and being discouraged makes me want to eat a pizza to feel better which only discourages me more.
-
Good morning, ladies! It's a new day, a new chance, a new opportunity to take those small steps towards better health. Yesterday has no hold on us. Hope you have a wonderful day!
-
Awhile back, I posted a list of top anti-cancer foods, and flounder was on the list. A few days ago, I made them into fish tacos, and had neighbors over. They loved them! I made a super easy tropical garnish for them: mango, red onion, and cilantro salsa. Guacamole makes a good topper for them, too. Between the fish and the avocados, it packs a mega dose of Omega 3 fatty acids.
-
Hi Ladies,
Barbe I totally remember that line from Drew Cary, it is hilarious! How are you doing after your surgery? Linda Lee I hate when you have been doing so well and then you jump on the scale and there is minimal or no weight loss. Makes we wanna throw the scale out the window! But, you're right you will start losing again, so hang in there! Miss Bianca those fish tacos sound yummy! Could you possibly give the recipe for the salsa? I am always looking for good recipes so that I can remain interested in my diet. Not having food ideas is really bad for me as I revert to old habits.
-
I didnt' know I was supposed to measure my weight loss in ounces, but apparently the doctor's scale thinks so! LOL.
I have found a new fav snack - organic refried beans (no lard, chemicals), heat up add your favorite salsa, mix, serve on a plate, sprinkle fresh cut tomatoes, cilantro, onion and avocado over it - eat with tortilla chip (I found one made from Quinoa at Whole Foods). You can also make nachos or chalupa's from it. I have found all natural baked tostadas at the store. Enjoy!
-
KC, here is a mango salsa recipe. It is pretty much what I made, except without a red bell pepper. ( I'll try that next time). It is easy and refreshing.
Ingredients:
(for 6)
3 mangos, diced
1 medium red onion, diced small
1 medium red pepper, diced
large handful of cilantro, chopped roughly
juice of 2 limes
s&p to tasteSagina, thanks for the bean dip recipe! It sounds so delicious.
-
MissBianca that salsa sure looks pretty.
-
MIssBianca how do you pick a good mango? and do you only use the really fleshy outside part?
-
MissBianca and Sagina - thanks so much for the recipes!! That salsa looks yummy! I will definitely try it... I'm not a huge fish fan, but I bet with some of this salsa over it, it will make a difference.
-
I'm eating this weekend and I can't seem to stop! I had TCH #5 on Thursday and typically I'm not at all interested in food and have bad diarrhea at this point. Hmmm...seems everything has changed this round - no Big D and plenty of appetite!
Sagina, I could lose a person, too. But I am 56lbs less than I was last July...most of that courtesy of chemo.
I'm gluten-free. Not sure if I could pull off vegan on top of that. Are you guys all post chemo? As good as those recipes above sound, my chemo tummy would not be impressed.

Hey ToriGirl----I lost 23 lbs with my BC then decided--- well I could lose more, reduced calories. Then was put on SAVELLA a SNRI for fibromyalgia caused by Arimidex. Lost very slowly but it was a total of 35 lbs. Then was put on Propranolol for PTSD, put on 14.5 Lbs pretty rapidly. New use for propranolol, off label. Well @ 12 lb weight gain I told counselor any more and I stop the drug. Which I did. The weight is starting to drop again. My PCP said she had another patient she put on SAVELLA that was losing weight the same way. I'm also on Aromasin which generally causes weight gain. I was on it for 5 months , but continued to loose weight, until Propranolol was introduced. Savella usual dose is 50 mg twice a day. I like my drugs in small doses. I take 25 mg bid-twice a day. At first when I started savella I had a low grade nausea and no appetite----definitely made it easy to not eat. I infact had to work at eating. Now off Propranolol, back to normal (abnormal) drugs the weight is coming off. The nausea--- food aversion thing stopped after about 5-6 months. Okay with me--I dropped allot of pounds and the fibromyalgia was controlled and then I went on Aromasin. Five months on the "A" fibro kicking up. So into modifying. But Savella is I believe the source of the 35 Lb loss
-
SAS you are lucky!! I've heard that Savella can go either way - might cause a weight gain! I just can't take that chance on my poor knees...sigh.
-
I had my DIEP pre op appointment yesterday and was told I am the ideal candidate for this surgery b/c I have a fat belly and small breasts....first time I ever heard THAT was ideal.
-
alexanjb - I had a DIEP 2 years ago and was told the same thing... for once there was a benefit to being overweight!
-
kcl165-please tell me more! How was your recovery time? Did you have any complications? Did the tummy tuck put you in a smaller pant size? Did you start eating less because of the tummy tightness? Does sizing become awkward b/c tummy is gone but hips, butt, and thighs remain? I have been on the DIEP 2011 thread but it doesn't really sound like most of them are big girls, or even if they are they aren't far enough away from their surgery to have the swelling go down yet. It has felt like a loss with the missing breast, does it ever feel that way about the tummy? I mean I don't really want a big belly of course, it's just that its still cutting off a part of me.
-
Hi alexanjb - I see you are having your DIEP next week! I had a bmx with the immediate DIEP. I had the surgery on a Tuesday and was in ICU until Thursday. I was not allowed to move for that entire time and was only allowed out of bed on the Friday. I was discharged on Sunday. I ended up back in hospital (overnight) the next week with a plural effusion that had to be drained. My recovery was fine, I had many people praying for me and I believe that really helped. The most annoying things were the four drains, but all four were gone within 2-3weeks. BTW, I spent my recovery at my sister's house and she has lots of stairs. I was fine with the stairs, just walked a little slower and tried to limit how many times I climbed them. Also, if you have toilet seats that are lower to the ground I would recommend purchasing a raised toilet seat. I got mine at Duane Reade or CVS for around $15.
Yes, I did drop down a pants size, however, I would suggest buying stretchy workout pants that have a tie in front for wearing after the surgery. I bought mine at Macys. I do not miss my belly. I do miss having feeling in my breasts and my tummy (the part below my new belly button). That being said, I am happy that I did the DIEP and I am pleased with my results.
Alex, I hope I answered your questions sufficiently. If not please feel free to PM me, I would really like to hear how you are doing and how the surgery goes. I wish you many good thoughts, wishes, and prayers for your surgery and a speedy recovery.
Big Hugs to you!
