Discomfort during breast MRI

    Hi everyone,

I had my breast MRI this evening.  During the MRI I had discomfort in my left breast (the one that has the DCIS).  It felt kind of like someone snapping elastics against the skin except the sensation was inside my breast.  Shortly after the contrast material went in, I felt it in my side just below my arm pit.  Is that normal??  It seems kind of weird to me, especially since I only felt it on the left side.

    Hi Natalie-

perhaps your sensations were partially due to your core biopsy which might have left a hematoma/seroma pocket of blood or fluid? I found recovery from the core biopsy more painful than from my lumpectomy. Anyway - ask your doctor about it.

I would ask your doctor.  Did it start when the contrast material went in?  I'm just wondering if it is a reaction to that.  I just had a very cold sensation when they injected the contrast material.

    Julie:

I had a core biopsy on 25 April and am still a bit sore because of it. I have an MRI scheduled for Tuesday and will likely have a lumpectomy in a few weeks. I did not expect to be sore for so long.

    I am nervous about both.

    WorkingMom10-

I am getting my 3rd MRI on Thursday! My first was a few weeks after my lumpectomy - In retrospect, it should have been before the lumpectomy - like yours. Anyway, I had no discomfort. When you first get on the table, they ask if you are comfortable, tell them if you need extra padding, or to shift around since you are supposed to lie still for about 20 minutes. The MRI machine makes very strange noises, like some modern music composition. Boing! clang clang, ding, clang dong - no particular pattern. With nothing to read, I was afraid I would go mad from boredom - so I counted. I am just glad my insurance is continuing to pay for my MRIs, since my DCIS was not detected by mammogram.

of course you are nervous about the MRI and lumpectomy.

I hope all goes well for you!!!

Thanks everyone.  Sorry for the late response.  I was out of town and away from my computer for the week-end.

The discomfort started when the machine started and it spread in area once the contrast went it.  I was just wondering if anyone else had ever felt something like that.  Guess I'm an oddball!!
