Please tell me I'm being paranoid
Needing some..."I've had the samething before" words of encouragement. So, my ribs have been hurting for about 2 weeks now. Not constant pain, but sore to touch in one spot and can go from burning pain once to a sharp pain next, it comes & goes and some days are better than others. Its a tolerable pain, more like a soreness, if that makes sense. Of course it would be on my right side where my liver is, which of course has a spot to small to biopsy right now so, needless to say my mind is racing. I had a sharp pain today and just broke down in tears while driving....I know you all understand that, even though the people at the stoplight didn't. I know I need to tell the onc. I do have an appt with my regular dr (1st time seeing him) next week and I'll probably mention it to him. Just needed to get my fears out there, I've been holding them in. God, I hate bc!

I've definitely had unexplained soreness in my ribs from time to time -- right where the bottom of the bra hits my breast/chest. I'm more easily sore in that area than i used to be with my 'real' breasts. I've had radiation so sometimes i think it's remnants of that too. I don't know why it's worse sometimes than others. But it does freak me out a bit when it happens! I'm sure it's nothing!

Hi Jenny
have the same kinda pain but on left side, PET was clear which put my mind at rest. I,m sure our ribs and everything else took quite a hit from the rads. could just be maybe from sleeping in same or wrong position. Onco dismissed my "buzzing, asleep" feelings in my arms when i wake up, will have to mention again, coz not going away. Do mention it to your doctor what u are experiencing in any case, take care

Hi Jenny,
You could be paranoid, aren't we all? We can go with that, but the guidline is if it goes on for more than 2 weeks to call and have it checked. Remember first and foremost your body has been through hell, and just because our hair comes back doesn't mean our insides have healed up as quickly. As time goes on you'll find lots of new and exciting (not) things that can happen, but it's always best to check it out first and don't worry about it more than you can help, because believe it or not, there are normal things it could be. I know, easier said than done, but do what you can and go easy on yourself.
((Hugs))

My ribs still ache where i had rads, some days it feels like i have been punched, and when i try to check for new bumps (why do i even try?) everything is just so tender. That's a year after finishing treatment.
But if we were not vigilant and didn't get our lumps checked out, hey i still would have not gone to my doctor, would not have known i had cancer and i could be dead by now. Or silently brewing lethal secondaries. There's a fine line between paranoia and normal concerns. But yes, Jenni, you've gone beyond the two week wait, so I think it can't hurt to get it looked at. At least set your mind at rest.
-
I should have mentioned this earlier, it's not on my rads side this is why I'm more concerned, my rads side is actually doing great. Its in my back area...where the ribs wrap around to the side almost where you're kidney is. Thanks, I do feel some better knowing others have had rib issues.
-
That,s exactly where mine is, told the onco it was my kidney, will be asking for urinalysis when i see my GP at the end of month, Looked up flank pain and it could be so many things
-
During rads, i had a pain on the opposite side of my rads, on my rib. Man i was scared. Convinced it was back. I had an x ray done to alleviate my fears. It was totally clear. There was never an explanation for that pain, and it did resolve with time on it's own. I remember being petrified, crying on my way to the xray dept... what a mess. It wasn't the last time i had a scare, that's the part that sucks the most, never having that final "you're cured and it can never ever come back. Enjoy your life now, bye." that's just about the only thing that would make me happy
Sorry you're feeling so scared. I think the only thing that will help is having it checked out. I don't want to make light on that spot that's too small to biopsy on your liver, I'm so sorry you have to even deal with that, but i think that if it's too small to biopsy, it's probably too small to cause any pain also.
Please keep us posted, until then, prayers for you.

This is all just soo hard. Could it be lymphedema? Have you been doing anything more strenuous lately, like pulling weeds? It could also be your gallbladder. There are a lot of women on here who had to have their gallbladder removed after being treated for breast cancer. Does it get worst after you eat? I hope they chime in soon to put your mind at ease!
-
I thought the same thing about the liver spot being too small, you know how our minds are though
I was told that from a scan in Feb. & it's not been checked since then. I have been doing some yard work lately. I thought about the gallbladder thing also, I've had gerd really bad since chemo and the indigestion is terrible after I eat, especially fatty foods. I'm on a PPI for it and it still bothers me so I can't imagine what it would be like if I didn't take anything. I feel so much better, I knew ya'll would get it....thanks so much.

I think many of us have costochondritis, a more or less stable inflammation of the cartilage and tissue between the ribs. Google it and see if this sounds right for you. It makes tender spots and sometimes sharp shooting pains for me. Earlier this week I had a breast MRI so I am pretty sure I am okay, but if I hadn't had one (and a chest x-ray and bone scan too) I'd be like you, wondering if I am paranoid, too hypervigilant, or just plain smart to be concerned. After almost nine years I am finally getting accustomed to how just plain weird my entire torso feels.
Hope I have finally turned the anxiety ridden, paranoid, up at night thinking what if... corner.
-
Hello Jennifer,
I'm feeling the same pain. On Tuesday I'm going to do a mammo and RX Torax as well. Hopefully everything will be ok, but everybody keep telling me that it is all in my mind! (I WISH)!
Anyway, I can't stop my anxiety either... :-)
-
@ weesa...what i read about costochodritis it is at the breastbone area, this is on my side....I wonder can you have it anywhere in the ribs?
Thanks everyone for your replies, here it is another day and it's still there so I'm going to mention it next week and probably start the run of test and the waiting game.
-
I don't have any specific experience to speak from about your symptoms, but like everyone else definitely understand the test/waiting anxiety! Sending positive thoughts your way that you quickly get through the process and that everything will be OK!

Jennyboog: I actually decided to get a PET scan done because I have a sore spot on my bottom rib, on my BC side, on the right. I also was feeling pressure around my liver area, which was really freaking my out. Anyway, had the PET done, came back clear. I think the pain on my rib is from when I had pneumonia a couple of years back and I probably broke a rib from coughing. I sort of figure that every pain I have in my body from here on out will worry me... blah!!
Praying for you and sending cyber hugs...
One love, Jackie

Will have to add to my research effects of rads on ribs, quite a lot of digging i have to do, seems like everyday there,s something new

I just went through this. I have had alot of acid reflex, stomach issues lately. In the last couple of days, I woke in the middle of the night, could hardley take a deep breath from the rib pain. The night before I was laying on my stomach, this might sound wierd. I think from the recon and rads, if we over stretch that area it can become very sore and tender. Lifting, reaching up to high, I know it sounds stupid, but I think it's normal to have pain in our rib area once in a while. I took advil for 2 days it's better. I also used the heating pad on the area, I know you would think ice, but this really helped me. The heat relaxed my body, it sounds wierd but, it did help. I had a bone scan in feb nothing in that area showed up. Don't worry to much it sounds like we are all dealing with this.
prayer's for good reports sweeti!!!!!

Hi There Jenny,
Just reading this, and thought I would share this . I WAS a stage IIIC er. and was blasted with rads, as I am sure you were too
Anyway, I had severe heartburn and exactly the same type of rib pain you describe. I did that whole routine in my head tto that you are doing.
I never was clear whether it was the rads or the Taxanes, but eventually it all resolved.
my rule was if the pain worsend I would have it checked out. and thank god all my aches and pains were just that. Take care dear, I know you'll get there too.
-
Hi Jenny,
I had something very similar. My ribs were sore, mostly to the touch. I did finally see my oncologist about it. We didn't do any scans but she did examine the area. Basically, she told me that it was that area of my body "waking up" after the trauma of surgery and radiation.
I hope that's helpful to you. Best of luck and I'm sure everything will be fine!

Jenny- before bc, I had similar pains on my right side, under my ribs, extending to my back. In fact, that pain got me the CT scan that found my bc. They never determined what it was...the dr. was convinced that it was digestion related. The CT scan was to rule out a lung clot. And my PET scan came back normal, indicating that it was NOT liver mets. I am in chemo now (and will do rads), but these treatments wreak havoc on the body. I have more indigestion, bone aches than ever. I bet it is related to treatment like all of these other women have mentioned.
Try to put it out of your mind, but make sure the doctor checks you out. Always better to get peace of mind.
-
Jenny
I have similiar pain on non cancer side. The pain isn't bad. It come and goes. I'm anxious to hear what you learn. I have a friend that developed liver mets. The pain was severe. I understand the 2 week rule, but I currently have so many milder aches and pains that I feel like i'd be getting a weekly pet scan.
I will keep my fingers crossed for you. I 100% understand your fears and worries.

Hi Jenny,
I am sorry you are having this issue. I get how you are feeling. It's hard not to know how to trust our bodies anymore, and what is our new "normal", plus add in aging, BLAH! I've got some pain I'm keeping an eye on and if it doesn't go away I guess I'll have to get it checked out. Do call your doc though, if only for some peace of mind.

Thanks ladies...it seemed to be better yesterday, I'm going to see how it does today. I think it could be digestion/gallbladder related as well, I've had terrible indigestion since chemo. I did call my onc yesterday and she said go to my PCM. I have an appt with him on Thurs. but this is the first time we'll meet...he doesn't even know I have bc, not sure how he'll be. I love you all for your replies and understanding.
