Stop SUGAR Support Thread

This thread is a great idea. I feel so much better when I stop having sweets, but it's like an addiction that draws me back the minute the stress goes up. I used to do all kinds of good things for my health, but ever since surviving cancer, I've had this 'what's the difference' attitude that I've got to shake. I see so many people around me getting cancer that sometimes I feel like it's only a matter of time that my luck runs out, but that's all the more reason I should pay more attention to my health.
Whippetmom, I love the idea of juice in ramikens. I was making juice popsicles one summer.
BTW, did you all see this NY Times article by Gary Taubes, "Is Sugar Toxic?"
-
Hi Ladies - I have been lurking but never posted here. I want you all to know that because of this thread I am really watching my sugar intake. In fact, I try not to consume sugar at all. Thank you all for reminding me daily of how bad sugar is for us.
Alicia- I know exactly how you feel. I am so tempted to just give in and eat a slice of cake. When that urge comes I tend to eat nuts and raisins or an apple, or other fruits. If the cravings don't stop, well..... I get an oatmeal cookie from the health food store, but I totally cut out sugar and even honey or agawe from my teas and coffees. No more Hershey bars and other candies either. Fruits! Also, since I eat a lot more veggies and less meat I have less cravings for sweets too.
-
Is anyone besides me making green smoothies? They satisfy my sweet tooth while giving me lots of greens. My favorite is a small banana, half an apple, a cup of unsweetened almond milk, and a couple of handfuls of kale. I also add a scoop of Nanogreens powder. Tastes like a shake, so it feels like a treat. I'm saving up juice recipes from the Creative Health Institute, latest I've tried is a cored and quartered pear with some bean sprouts, some cut up broccoli, a few grapes, and ice cubes or water (they call it "Beanie Brew"). Surprisingly delicious and a nice alternative to salad.

I can't get myself to drink anything that is green! Don't mind eating green veggies.
Yesterday I went to a baby shower - sweets galore! They only had diet Dr. Pepper and I don't drink Dr. Pepper so I ended up having a real coke. I couldn't stand it anymore and went to 7-11 and bought a couple of coke zeros to drink instead. I had 1/2 of a dessert but tried to limit my eating to healthy choices even though there was a massive buffet to pick from. I wasn't hungry when I got home so dinner was totally out of the question.
I haven't been able to break the 140 lb barrier yet. I have been stuck there for a week now even though I am carefully monitoring every single thing I put in my mouth.
I hate it that I gained 30 lbs while on chemo. My goal weight is to get back to 123 lbs which is where I was before chemo and I was in a size 4 at the time.
-
Be patient Jancie -- you will get there! Do you do any sort of cardio/workout? That might help. I know you ride (which itself is a workout) so maybe it's just a matter of being patient.
-
Lilah - I walk about 30 minutes at night. I am going to start a Zumba class in June. The nice thing is my fat gut as almost disappeared, however I am still carrying weight on my back and arms. My legs, hips, and butt are in decent shape due to the riding.
I know I need to be patient. It just sucks that I could gain 30 lbs in a span of 2 months but it is taking me so much longer to get rid of it.
-
Jancie, I go by how my clothes fit too! After cutting out sugar and eating tons of veggies, as well as juicing, I can now get into a pair of jeans that I couldn't button a couple of weeks ago. So was surprised when at the onc's office that I hadn't lost ONE pound. But then I remembered years ago when I started running I GAINED two pounds, but lost 2 dress sizes. So I know I've lost weight and won't obsess over what the scale says.
-
That, Jancie, is one of the cruelest twists of fate ever (the fast gain, slow lose) -- it sucks!
-
I have noticed my clothes are fitting looser than before. The skirts that used to hit my waist are now hitting my hips so they actually look longer
Physically I feel so much better. I have always watched the Biggest Loser - I am in awe of their discipline and how they have changed their lives but always sat there watching it in the comfort of my recliner with a real coke in hand!
Losing this weight is also helping me emotionally. I haven't really liked myself much these past two years and so been having difficulty being "nice" and accepting of my dh. I became too critical but hey.....menopause rears its ugly head at times so I am not going to beat myself up over it.
-
I've been doing pretty good overall, but just broke down and had my first soft-serve twist cone of the season (it hit 85 degrees today)... it was pretty damn good. BUT, not worth it in the long run. Ice cream shops just don't have any decent substitutions when you're there with the family.
I just read "Why We Get Fat" by Gary Taubes. I wish I hadn't bothered. It should just be called "Read Dr. Atkins Books"... I'm vegetarian so if carbs ARE making me fat (and they probably are), this book offers me no solutions. I only mention it because I know some of you count carbs for diabetes, and I thought this book may have some answers. But it is the first book I ever read that states no whole grains or beans either! WOW. He is the same author of the NYT Is Sugar Toxic article. Interesting stuff, but totally impractical for a vegetarian or vegan. Basically his solution is eat all the meat & fish & eggs you want, some cheese, lots of leafy greens, a little full fat dairy. He CLAIMS this diet is better for cancer as well, but I don't know, it goes against a lot of what is in AntiCancer.
I'll pass on it. Just curious if anyone else had read it.

Xmas -- LOL
I think those Atkins style diets are too restrictive. And I AM a diabetic counting carbs... but I eat more carbs than those diets allow. I think it's about moderation... but in my case controlling my carbs helps me to control my blood sugar.
-
Mary, we 'juice' our veggies and eat them as soup. A bit of garlic, turmeric, pepper, and a bit of greek yogurt in the Bullet makes a great soup with any vegetable.
-
I think the Atkins diet is restrictive at first. But by the time you've rid yourself of the carb/sugar addiction and get to the maintenance phase, you can be at that 60-100 gram range and include a few whole grains and beans. We talk about this on the WebMD diabetic board quite frequently. Our medical consultant, from Tufts University, is a believer in restricting whole grains because most people will end up eating those whole grains with sugar, fat, or whatever. He doesn't restrict fruit and feels the benefits outweigh the "cost" of the natural sugar carbs. This is particularly true if you are trying to lose weight.
Personally, I can't see the benefit of juicing...for me, the chewing experience is part of the satisfaction of eating something. So I never drink orange juice, but I will eat an orange. Way more fiber, which is important. The only "juice" I will have once in a while is a v-8, as a snack. But at the end of the day, I'd rather crunch away at those veggies.

Personally, I think you can just do the maintenance version of the Atkins diet (the 60 - 100 grams of carbs a day that is). That's what I'm doing now and have lost 8.5 pounds and had instant results with lowering my blood sugar. I guess if you need to be stricter to get used to such a diet then the initial phase is necessary. I've had things like a little rice, a little pizza in the 4 weeks since I've been doing this (but only as a treat once a week, which is certainly less than what I was eating prior to the change of diet) while increasing veggies and switching to fruit (like apple) for a regular treat. Maybe this also was easier for me because I did do the strict Atkins diet several years ago... and did see my diet stay shifted thereafter (but in the past year I was slipping badly over to sugar and carbs again).

Has anyone tried sweetner called truvia. I have and it has a texture and taste that is new to me. I had a few issue with it. It seems to not disolve like sugar. Anyone come across some ways that I can get it to that point when I sprinkle it on my berries. Any comments would be helpful.
-
Paula, I love berries for the natural taste they have. I used to put sugar on strawberries out of habit until I got lazy one day and just ate them right from the carton without even washing them!
Now I enjoy all my fruit without any added sugar.
Beans are VERY high in carbs, I can see why they are a no-no!
-
Just got back from the BC cruise and managed to skip all sweets and deserts. In the dinningroom when everyone was indulging on the fancy deserts I nibbled on a cheese plate alternative. No problem getting into the gown I had purchased for my daughters wedding which is fast approaching.
-
Barbe,
Beans are not that high in carbs, but they are very high in fiber and a good source of protein (when ccombined with other foods). So even in an Atkins world, they are generally an accepted food. A 1/2 cup serving of kidney beans is 19 carb grams, but 6 fiber grams. That nets out to 13 grams - a perfectly acceptable and healthy serving. And you also get almost 7 grams of protein.
A really good source to check the carbs, sugar, fiber content of any food is www.calorieking.com

What do you guys think of my diet: Juicing veggies & fruits daily. One hard-boiled egg daily, 2 potatoes with a couple of broccoli florets or half a bell pepper or beans or rice with sauteed onions, celery and mushrooms in them for dinner. Oatmeal in the a.m. 3 slices of bread with low fat cheese, but no butter (throughout the day). Also no frozen dinners. Am I getting enough protein without eating fish?. Don't eat meat at all.
Since I run I need the carbs for energy, thus the 3 slices of bread. I would like to cut out the cheese, but love the taste.
-
I am just the opposite: Don't like the taste of any of the raw vegetables - and hate the pulp in oranges for instance - so juicing is perfect for me. I just started two weeks ago and love it! I add one apple, 2 carrots, 2 celery, half a lemon, some cabbage and/or cucumber and maybe some peaches. Have more energy since juicing and feel calmer overall.
-
SR - that does not sound like enough protein to me. (in my opinion) Could you replace some of the bread with brown rice - that is a complete protein - or a fried egg/cheese on a slice of bread, or something else that has protein? Even whey protein powder - I take it after I work out - it has 24 g protein in one scoop. I mix it with water and gulp it down and there's a quick/easy 24g protein in me!
Protein is SO important. If you eat tofu, could you add a bit to your saute for dinner maybe? Or some seitan?
Just some thoughts.
Amy

I can't have beans because of gout though I love them and had always thought them high in carbs, thanks for setting me straight on that!!
Amy, SR shouldn't have tofu as she is ER+. I agree though, it doesn't sound anywhere near enough protein - and it doesn't just have to come from fish. I would be weak on that diet. What about different cheeses too, like ricotta? It's fun to play with.
-
SR - I agree, it seems you are a little low in the protein dept.
There are many kinds of diets out there, and you can find pro's and con's on all of them. At the end of the day, the best one is the one you can stick with to achieve your desired results. And as long as your energy levels are good, your lab results are where you and your doctor want them to be, and you feel healthy, then you are eating right "for you."

I tried truvia, and all forms of that sweetner, and always seemed to have a strong after taste.
I use Agave - even tho many have said it's just 'frustose' - it does have a lower glycemic level than honey, which I also use - just a little bit sometimes, in hot tea.
-
Barbe - I have been told by various doctors and nutritionists (and one naturopath that specializes in cancer patients) that tofu and other items with soy in their 'natural form' (i.e. edamame) are fine - it is the processed soy; the soy oil, soy milk, soy powders, burgers, etc that are the no-nos. Personally, I almost never eat tofu anymore and stay away from all the processed soy items completely. BUT if she has such a limited choice in source of proteins, I thought maybe it would be an option for her.
-
tofu is processed to become tofu isn't it?
-
Paula - I tried Truvia in my coffee and found it had a bitter aftertaste. On the other hand, it is being used by Tropicana for "Trop50" drinks like orange and lemonade. Because they already have an acid bite, I find these drinks quite good.

I can taste Aspertame and other crap in anything you give me. I've discovered it in gum even!! My poor DH will try to find me something that says 'sugar free' or 'no sugar' and sure enough, there is that crap taste!!!
It's a good idea to hide it in an acidic drink!
-
Aspartame doesn't bother me. I've been drinking Diet Coke since it was the new thing after Tab. When they came out with Diet Coke sweetened with Splenda, I was all excited until I tasted it. I actually prefer my Diet Coke with aspartame...weird, I know. I use Splenda for my coffee and when I occasionally bake or sweeten something like strawberries to make a sauce. As a diabetic, I accept artificial sweeteners are just part of my diet, especially with beverages. I'd rather eat my calories and carbs than drink them!

Thanks Amy. I do eat brown rice. Tofu is not allowed for cancer patients (according to my onc) Have you heard that? I am going to buy some protein powder. That is a really good idea I hadn't thought of. I do eat an egg every day, but not fried - boiled.
