my surgery was 2 weeks ago and I feel like I am in danger of turning into a couch potato! Before mx I used a nordic cross trainer machine and power walked/jogged as well as using weights. I have been walking but the implant is still sore-I would like to eventually run but I am worried about the implant/flap reconstruction- has anyone any advice about this and when they went back to exercise after a similar operation (lat dorsi reconstruction with implant).

Thanks Smile

You might try "latissimus dorsi breast reconstruction".  Quite a few of us there and a few different opinions of when to proceed with exercise.  I had to wait a month before I was allowed to go to the physio for gentle stretching - no weight bearing on arms or chest or back. I used to run and use quite heavy equipment on our property like a chainsaw.  My PS said I must wait 12 weeks post op before running (just beginning again) but I can walk since 2 weeks post op.  Also I have to wait until 12 weeks to start weight bearing exercises or heavier use of my arms and chest and back.  Your back has to adjust to the loss of muscle, and your pec muscles need to stay flexible to allow your implant to settle into place and if you flex your biceps you will automatically flex your pecs/  I had a DM with only one LD flap with a permanent implant and another implant on the other side.  I thought the LD side had slipped down when I saw the PS at the 9 week visit, but she told me my implant had ridden up a bit on the other side as the pectoral muscle was getting more work.  Opps.

Try that site and scroll back.  Many of us are going through it, some, like me, just hitting 10 weeks and other had it 1 1/2 years ago.

Good luck and better a couch potato than damage your surgery!

Thanks Justagirl for your advice, I discovered that thread which has been really useful and posted on there, too! I'm still finding my way around the site and keep posting in the wrong place! I guess with the exercise I will just have to be more patient. I imagine 12 weeks is the magic time when most of the healing should've happened , physically and it's safe to start off slowly again with running or whatever. I've been walking and stretching using my physio exercises and that seems to help. Will check out that LD thread again.thanks!

    lust4life:

You are welcome!  Just remember you have had a big surgery and I don't know if you have chemo or/and radiation to not look forward to, but rest and recovery as just as important.  You don't want to tear any tender or healing tissue and your body needs time to adjust to the trauma.  You don't need any infections or complications.

Speaking for myself, as a person who has always attacked challenges headon and aggressively, trust me that this is one time to go gentle. You will have plenty of time in the future and that's what your aim should be.  I got so I didn't freak out because I wasn't running 50km a week or lifting weights three times weekly or running the vaccum every three days.  I discovered nothing really happens if there is dog hair on the floor or some chore isn't getting done around the house.

Nothing, nothing, nothing, is more important than allowing  yourself time to heal. Be kind to yourself.  Also, I saw  your question about that boob training bra you have on how long to wear it - ask the doctor or the nurse in the office or whoever gave it to you. Go girl!
