My mother was diagnosed with stage I breast cancer in April.  The lump was small and the removed it, but were not able to get all precancerous tissue, therefore recommending a mastectomy.  She chose to have one, and after talking with family and friends, she decided to have a double mastectomy.  Surgery went well and mom is doing well, but we got her bill in the mail and insurance refuses to cover the left side mastectomy because it was an elective surgery.  Doctors have both appealed it with no avail.

Any suggestions that you can give us on how to deal with this and what to do as the next step?

Brunette if you are in the US contact the American Cancer Society. They have social workers that that will help you navigate this mess (lawyers too). Their help is free. linky

It is possible that the wrong code was used.

    Side note:
Hate insurance companies. Lopping off a breast isn't "elective" it's preventative.
