edited June 2014 in Stage III Breast Cancer

I had a MRI of the breast done yesterday for surveillance. They called today to say there was increased enhancement on surgery side. I am going for biopsy next week. Has anyone had a MRI with increased enhancement that it wasnt cancer? I think I am still in shock and am hoping it will be nothing

MRI can often times show false postive; really the only way to determine if tissue may have cancer in it is to biopsy. actually, you want them to check it out to find out for sure.  sorry you are going through this.  there is good information on this site regarding breast MRI.  i know this is so hard. hang in there.

    Hi Kandy,

Yes, I had an area show up on my very first MRI, on my "good" side. Actually, three areas showed up which warranted further testing. Two things they could see on an U/S and were not concerning, the third didn't show on either U/S or Mammo. They actually did a MRI guided Biopsy of it and it ended up being B9. I have had follow-up MRI's every year since, and they have all been clear. Remember, as Diana says, MRI's are notorious for false positives.

I just had a Mammo and the tech told me they will go over it with a fine tooth comb, "given my history." I would imagine they are just being super careful with you as well.

Hang in there, I know how terribly stressful this is. But there is every chance this will turn out well for you. Keep us updated.

MRI's give false positives all the time. According to the Radiologist that did my biopsy he said that it's still a newer tool used for breast cancer diagnosis. They are still learning which spots to be concerned with.

Before surgery the MRI showed 4 spots of concern. I was told by my BS I would have to have all 4 biopsied although there was only 1 spot of great concern. In my case I just did a BMX and didn't bother with the biopsies. Ended up 3 spots were just cysts, 4th spot was LCIS.

Yes, I have had this. I had a breast lift on my non mast side and the second MRI after that surgery showed a suspicious thickening/possible mass. They did a biopsy and it was scar tissue. Please know that many false positives occur with mri's. MANY. Take deep breaths, have the biopsy, and try to just continue as best you can with day to day stuff until you get that all clear call. Good luck!

Thanks to everyone for your responses. I am in hope that it will be a false positive although the chances are not so good since this was my 3rd MRI and it was different from the last one. I am trying not to let it overcome me. Thanks again for your support and I will keep you informed.

I had an ultrasound yesterday to see if they could see the place and do the biopsy. Unable to find it with ultrasound so they scheduled a MRI biopsy next week. Nothing like playing the waiting game for another week. I will let you know how it goes.

Kandie, I had the same thing - nil on U/S so they did the biopsy in the MRI. I am so sorry that you didn't get better answers yesterday. Waiting sucks.

Here for you and praying all is normal, I had a big scare this week too. A swollen node, they were concerned. It turned out to be ok and so will your's. I'm so sorry your in the waiting phase, when I had my MRI at first dx,  they told me I had 4 tumors. I had 1 tumor, so they can show lots of things that are not cancer. This road is hard, we are here!!!!

Prayers for peace , lots of peace,

    hugs
