D3 test back today and very disappointed

Options

Anyone out there an expert in D3? I got my results back today and my score was a 48. Last year at this time it was a 46. I have gradually increased my dose from 2000 IUs a day to 4000 to 5000 and for the last 4months 10000 IUs a day and my levels are only a 48? How can that be? What can be done to help the body better absorb D3 I don't understand why it's not higher.Hope someone out there has some insight. I would love to hear it.

Debbie

Not really sure. That IS frustrating! Are you spending time in the sun without sunscreen? Try to do 15-30 minutes every day, if possible. I hear that's far superior to supplements in terms of getting the Vitamin in a form our bodies can use. Good luck!

I had success with the Carlson liquid drops.  Less expensive to order on line then purchase at local store.  Recent count was 70 where previous counts were in the 20-30s.  It took time to slowly increase the level.

For the past 2 1/2 years I am also on big doses of Vitamin D (2400 units daily) and I have only got my Vitamin D level up to 38. A nurse practioner just told me that I should get checked for a gluten intolerance which can cause leaky gut and decreased  absorption of Vitamin D.

It will take more than the dosage you are taking to make a difference. My level was 24 in October and by taking 5000 IU D3 daily and 20,000 IU prescription D2 twice a week, my level went to 101 in three months. I now take 5000 IU D3 twice daily and have found research that taking Ubiquinol, the new activated form of CoQ10 with 8500 IU of D3 helps your body absorb and use the D3. I order my supplements from Swanson online at a very reasonable price and their D3 contains no soy. Hope this helps.

Are you taking sublingual or liquid vitamin D? You posted you just recently started taking 5000, I think that's the minimum you should take until your levels increase. You should also take it with some fat, olive oil, milk, etc.

Are you able to lay out for 15 or 20 minutes in the sun? It has to be direct sunlight , not through windows, clothes or sunscreen.

I'm taking Vitamin D drops that are 20,000 units per drop from drclarkstore. There are several companies that make it in this strength. If I miss a day, I take two drops the next day.

Doc monitors me. The D stays around 70 in this regimen. My sister needed more to start-- she was a bad absorber. The D itself is supposed to create more D receptors in those who are bad absorbers according tho the doc.

Here's a lively, easy to watch Youtube that mentions aromatase function of D as well as cell differentiation.

great ideas about the vitamin D, ladies. i am trying to boost my level - it was 22 in november! ack!!

although the last suggestion about tanning booths gives me pause - they are literally death, given the HUGE risk for melanoma. more and more folks are contracting melanoma from tanning booths - seriously, stay away!!

I concur with elmcity69. I am a huge advocate AGAINST tanning beds. I never wore a two piece bathing suit but would wear one in a tanning bed. One .83 mm melanoma later and I can't imagine even walking into a tanning salon for the rest of my life. I do spray tans for special events and during the summer. Probably the scariest thing I've ever been through and is in the back of my mind every day. Melanoma is a sneaky little bugger. Say NO to tanning beds. I am on 2,000 units of vitamin D and will have my levels checked next week.

Debbie, I just came across this thread and wanted to add... I recently heard a discussion of Vitamin D by doctors out of NYU Medical Center, and one of them made the point that we cannot absorb more than 2500IUs of D at a time.  So, if you're taking 10,000 IUs, be sure you're breaking it up into 4 or 5 smaller amounts a day.

Also, sunscreen cuts our ability to absorb natural Vitamin D from sunshine by 95%.  Also a lot of D is absorbed through our eyes, which wearing sunglasses prevents.  So try to spend some time outdoors without sunscreen or sunglasses.     Deanna

SusanK8 or "toosmartforyou" or whatever your name is these days, that's pretty dangerous advice you're giving about tanning beds.  You may want to rethink your position.

My vitamin D was extremely low about 1.5 years ago. My GP put me on prescription for 3 months then 1000IU D3 daily. (My regular vitamin had 400 IU of D) I think it went up to 40.

When I my bone density test came back that I was slightly osteopenic my onc put me on Calcuim 1200 with D 4 00IU). She did test my D levels again after I had been taking the calcuim/D and I was something like 79, just above normal.

My GP was not concerned about me being high. I think it can take a while for your levels to go up.

Mine increased some when I took it with olive oil. I put lemon in my olive oil to make it go down easier. Mine is 34.
