MLP .... A Million Little Pieces
Have any of you read the book or been influenced by it's fall out int the media. I don't necessarily want to lead a discussion. But I'm wondering if it correlates to this board. Let's suppose a BC patient writes her memoir, based on fact, but littered with fiction to make her story hit home harder. She helps thousands with her story. Is she wrong or right?

I started to read the book but just couldn't bring myself to finish it. It didn't matter to me how factual it was, I just couldn't finish it, and that's not like me. If Why I Wore Lipstick To My Mastectomy was more fiction than fact, it wouldn't bother me. I did read it for inspiration.

ok, i've had my head in the sand for a while (or perhaps elsewhere) i don't watch tv because everything makes me cry and i've been trying to just keep busy in other ways and avoid things to close to home. now, however, i'm curious! would you gals mind filling me in a bit? i am an avid reader but have been lapsing there as well because i'm in the avoidance stage, but ready to move along and get caught up in the world. thanks, michelle

Hi sweetie, this may not be the book you choose to read to get back into the swing of things. It's very controversial, and very graphic. You might want to stick to more traditional books. This book is a memoir published by Random House, written by James Fray. It's a recount of his stay in rehab for drug/alcohol addiction. It's a very raw, coarse account of his story. Court TV (the Smoking Gun) got wind of the story, and to protect innocent readers, they felt compelled to report that he embellished his criminal past in the book. Oprah had endorsed the book on her show, even went so far as to say it kept her awake at night. Thank goodness the Smoking Gun is looking out for our best interests. Surely they weren't trying to smear Oprah, or the author of this book. Go James Fray.
Michelle, I will pray for your triumph. -
I definitely would not recommend it to get back into reading - try the The Kite Runner instead or for a lighter reading, In Her Shoes or Good In Bed.

Million Pieces -- author said he 'embellished' some portions and I agree -- it was embellishment. It's probably done all the time. Someone chose to pick on this guy. Doesn't change the message his book has. I understand some parole officers are giving book to parolees to read. Sounds OK to me.

Thanks for seeing what I was trying to point out...The survivor of any affliction, physical, mental, emotional whatever, in recounting their story; will make it sound a little worse than what it actually was to include people that might have been in an even worse situation.

I read and liked a million Little Pieces. RAW, yes... But a good read. Was sorry to here he embellished...He should have been more upfront about it... But if he helps people great.

How does one lie or" embellish" know what they are going threw...I say I am in my own private cancer hell and no matter what I say or how I say it no one can ever feel How I feel.... EVER.....

i know its hard for people to face the disease when they are first diagnosed, heck, i still get upset and try to bury my head in the sand. Its hard especially when you feel all alone. Remember though girls, we are not nor will we ever be alone.
As to whether the book is filled with truth and a bit of fiction. As long as it saves even one life, who cares how much fiction there is truthfully. Lets face it the drama queens in Hollywood (actress's) play up on their experiences everyday and why? #1 because somewhere in side, they feel they will help someone and they usually do! #2. They are paid to fictionalize their experience and make it sound a bit worse. Not all of them do it but some lets face it do and it saves hundreds of our sisters each and everyday. That is all that matters.
