Hello my name is Kristina

I am 28 years old and have a family history of breast cancer. My grandma was 50 and my cousin was 37 when diagnosed. My cousin was tested for the BRCA gene and she did not have it.

I recently found a lump in my right breast and went into the doc. Given my family history he sent me right in for a mammo and ultra sound. The lump that I was feeling ended up being cyst but both the ultrasound tech and mammo tech said that I had calcification's in my breasts. The radiologist came in and ultrasounded me himself and said that my breast tissue looked abnormal but he could not find a definite mass. He is sending me in for a MRI so that if he needs to biopsy then he will know where exactly to do it. I got the report and I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on them.

Mammogram results-right breast

No definite mass can be seen. There are numerous mircocalcifications in the upper-outer quadrant of the right breast which could be malignant calcification's (for right side.) There are some calcification's deep to the areola on the left side. Onultrasonography, the upper-outer quadrant of the breast had a irregularly hypoechoic appearance with some cysts.

Ultrasound-right breast

No distinct mass is seem but there is an extensive area of abnormal echogenicity in the upper outer quadrant of the breast. It contains some small cysts. Mircocalcifications are also present within it. There is an area of hypodensity which is more suspicious of a carcinoma.

I am of course completely freaked out...I have also been having right arm pain and the sides of my ribs were my lymph nodes are sore. If it looks likely that I have cancer then I would like to know...I am a single mother to a beautiful 3 year old little boy. So please and thoughts, comments, or similar experiences would be much appreciate! Thank you!

The one thing I can say is that radiologists tend to give the worst case scenario. It is a cover-your-butt thing - they don't want to leave something out that is found on a later study.  If subsequent studies do not confirm suspicious areas it has at least been highlighted as to what it COULD be.  It is better that you have the MRI and they should look at your whole chest, both sides and anywhere you are experiencing pain/symptoms, such as arm and nodes.  Make sure you tell them about that so they can take a look.

Hopefully you are scheduled for an MRI soon - the waiting is tough I know.  Sending positivity your way and keep us posted!

It sounds like if it was cancer, it would be very early cancer, therefore very curable!  cysts and fibrotic lumps are painful... cancer usually isn't painful.  I am praying for b9 results for you! It sounds like you have a great medical team!

Hang in there! Waiting for results can be nerve wrecking!

Thank you for your repiles!  I have been schedule for a breast MRI tomorrow and waiting is just so hard!  Does anyone know how long it takes to get results?  Also, how often does it end up being cancer?  any insight would be wonderful!  Thank you, Kristina

Good luck tomoro! It can take approx. 1 week to 10 days for MRI results.  Since you are so young (so am I), the chances of it being cancer are quite low.  Hang in there! You can always ask you doc for something to help with the anxiety??? I take Ativan sometimes.

Try and ask to see some images if you can :) It's amazing the details seen on an MRI !  The most amazing pic I saw, was of my muscle tissue!

So I had my MRI on Wednesday and am still waiting for the results.  They will hopefully be in tomorrow.  Waiting is torture!  I do not have a good feeling about it because I have a swollen lymohnode on my right side (sign of concern.)  I am praying for good results!
