Dr Oz and Alternative Medicine site

For those looking for sources, lots of valuable, accurate, credible, verifiable info on thread "guinea pigs, are we?"
-
What a good website. All sorts of good stuff here.
But I can't seem to find the weekly schedule of topics. Maybe somebody else has better eyes.
-
I think that Dr Oz gets a lot of criticism because people would rather pop a prescription pill and believe that their problem is taken care of. Making lifestyle changes takes dedication to research and implementation.

I love your info, keep posting! I have been reading about BC & treatment options since Dec. 17th....the day the earth stood still for me. I have read study after study, clinical reports like romance novels haha! I also have a friend that had treatment in Germany. I am not afraid to say this: the FDA and big pharma dictate our health. I am not an outsider looking in with a wild ass opinion, I had BC too. I was prepared to do whatever it took to get this estrogen drunk little b*~€h out of my my body! I had BLMX, I didn't meditate with a bunch of tea leaves and hope it would go away.
My Aunt passed at 30' my Mother was diagnosed almost exactly one year before me at 59 and my BF passed at 43. I also work in Hospice. I know how serious this cancer business is. When faced with hormone treatment after my surgery I asked for a few weeks to research. There is some very serious side effects with the med's to widely prescribed. In addition to changing my mind set and being accountable for what I put in my body..I went organic. One strawberry has up to 52 pesticides in it. Yuk right? One day on a public web site called Prop 65 I was looking for chemicals I would recognize & see what the risks are? When I got down to the " T's" I found Tamoxifen. It is a known carcinogen that causes cancer. What? My oncologist told me I needed it. That set the ball rolling for my research. Zeneca lobbied big time to keep it off this list..but they lost!
I went back to my Dr. He asked me...word for word.." are you going to take it or not?" I smiled and said I wasn't comfortable taking a carcinogen to prevent a recurrence. With my history of endometriosis, it just seemed plain stupid...end of story, he didn't say one more word about Tamoxifen. He said " obviously you are a smart woman & do your homework, I think you are going to be fine with whatever treatment you decide on"
He then asked if I would give him info on DIM and Modified Citrus Pectin? ( the treatment I am starting). He said " we don't know everything ya know".
My point is just because a doctor is telling us something -
Cut me off lol!
Doesn't mean it's the only way. Or the right way for you. We have to be proactive in this battle;)
Peace -
No one has died from taking supplements?? I highly doubt that. It's probably not tracked, as people tend not to tell their docs that they take them.
My Dad's partner had a very severe bleed from mixing Ginko with her Coumadin. She heard Ginko would help her remember things better. Didn't realize it was contraindicated with Coumadin ( a blood thinner.) Sure doesn't say it on the label, of course.
No safety standards for supplements in the US is because the industry does not WANT to conform. There's a huge lobby for companies. It would cost money, and they'd have to actually do TRUE research to support their claims. They have the cash cow right where they want it.
Now, off to take my Balanced Body and other supplements!!

Edited for spelling and to add this thought that I'll chew on today: Why are people so quick to take a handful of pills/supplements/herbs off the shelf, but will scrutinize to the n-th degree a prescription handed over by a doctor? Is it a control thing? I'm really puzzled by this, and it includes my own behavior...

Hi SusanK8

Word is out ladies !!!
Highly doubt the pharmaco drug lords will jumb on this one, as one can grow in own garden or visit the corner store....
".....Our experiments show that while the soybean extract acts as a promoter of MCF-7 cell growth, the fenugreek extract induces apoptosis"
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17850779
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19197146
Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide. Conventional therapies cause serious side effects and, at best, merely extend the patient's lifespan by a few years. Cancer control may therefore benefit from the potential that resides in alternative therapies. There is thus an increasing demand to utilize alternative concepts or approaches to the prevention of cancer. In this report, we show a potential protective effect of Fenugreek seeds against 7,12-dimethylbenz(alpha)anthracene (DMBA)-induced breast cancer in rats. At 200 mg/kg b.wt., Fenugreek seeds' extract significantly inhibited the DMBA-induced mammary hyperplasia and decreased its incidence. Epidemiological studies also implicate apoptosis as a mechanism that might mediate the Fenugreek's anti-breast cancer protective effects. To our knowledge, this is the first study that suggests significant chemopreventive effects of Fenugreek seeds against breast cancer

Susan, that ws my whole point!! She mixed meds, her doc didn't know or he could have adjusted her Coumadin.
When you (generic you, not just Susan) to your traditional health care provider, do you list all your supplements when they ask what meds you take? Most people hide the fact that they take anything beyond Calcium or fish oils. Maybe it's because the doc's eyes would probably glaze over...
-
I think I will just eat organic as much as I can. Quit drinking store bought milk and dairy products, stop drinking sodas (i have) stopped eating bread. Eat meat sparingly and wash everything like heck before I put it in my mouth.
This is all so confusing. I just know anything in a box, bottle or plastic is probably not good for me.
-
I wuv you Susan, lol.
-
@Luan... Sloan-Kettering states if you are ER+ to avoid fenugreek.
-
I have never been on the Dr. Oz train. I don't like to watch too much tv, and can't think of anything I want to watch before 8pm..heh.
I've seen members here reference Dr Oz when discussing "organic" food. This concerns me because they seem to believe "organic" means no chemicals are used...in this country, that is NOT true...up to 30% of the growing, transporting process can involve synthetics and still get the label "organic." ("100% organic" labels are better markers for people trying to avoid synthetic chemicals.)
On a personal note, I believe Oprah lost her mind several years ago...so ANYTHING she recommends (From books to Drs) is highly suspect...lol...
I've done work in the organic industry and know from experience it is not monitored well (though is getting better).
I don't know if Dr Oz has discussed the 3 levels of "organic" labeling in this country...but from some of the comments others here have made in reference to him and buying organic...doesn't seem like it.
To me, that is basic, easy to find information..and if he isn't educating Americans on what "organic" labeling really means before encouraging them to buy it, then it seems disingenuous to me.

That girl, i,ll go with the results of my search thank u
Tonlee, that topic has been adressed a number of times. basically the shows address day to day concerns by every day people and current issues. i.e today, how to recognize signs of apnea amongst other things -
Ah, thanks for the clarification Luan, like I said, I've never watched it

I wonder though, if it's been addressed several times, why there seems to be so much misinformation (quoting Oz as the source) about it?
I dunno. I don't look to daytime entertainment television for any type of guidance or entertainment for that matter! lol
-
I don,t where u saw this, i was under the strong impression that sisters were "scared" to even whisper Oz here, must have been on the wrong threads all along...u know everything comes down to perception, perspective AND relativity

-
I'm not sure why anyone would be scared to talk about Dr. Oz here.
ETA - SusanK8, I'm still hoping you might provide some sources for your information, since a lot of it seems to be quite incorrect. Without citing sources, it seems you may not be interested in facts.
Luan - maybe you were replying to another topic, but I looked at your Guinea Pigs thread and didn't find any credible sources with regard to this thread...?
-
Newme, whoever has made you judge here ?
-
"Newme, whoever has made you judge here ?"
Nope, I'm not a judge! Just a participant in this discussion and asking for clarification, that's all.
-
thenewme is one of our resident trolls. She even started a thread promoting trolling here. We ignore her.
-
Ahhhh, thanks Janelovesdogs, she is playing physician on another thread...
thenewme, you are DEMANDING, are you -
It's not permitted to identify anyone by name as a troll. That is both insulting and derogatory. I'm reporting Janeluvsdogs' post.
By the way, Luan, it IS permitted to ask posters to provide some verification (sources) for their statements.
-
Lindasa, the newme can speak for herself, unless u are the newme...?
-
Oh my. Janeluvsdogs and Luan - seriously???
Hi Lindasa, no - please don't report her post. I think it helps to let it stand. I find it helpful to look back through a person's posting history to put things into context. Anyway, everything we say here can and will be archived for someone's "material" elsewhere, if you know what I mean.
-
Thenewme, that sounds like gang tactics, seriously ? my comments archived in Batman,s cave by the Joker, too funny, no need to watch cartoons, this is REaL entertainment !!!
-
Luan,
He is brought up quite a bit here imo.
Specifically, I'm mostly thinking about the sugar thread, that's my most recent experience with the reference.

I don't think it's fair to say NO ONE has ever died from taking supplements. Possibility exists for toxicity with everything ingested especially as supplements become more and more concentrated, and we begin to take more and more different supplements. A few years ago, and I can't find it anywhere, there was this big news splash about a woman that died from toxicity associated with a diet tea herbal blend or something like that. It destroyed her liver. I think it's also important to recognized that there is often an organic inspiration for pharmaceuticals.
For those of us...especially myself...that are not as well researched, I RELY on these threads to give me information to research. The name calling and the dismissive posts aren't helpful because it just ends up being noise in the thread...agree to disagree and just move on. Aren't we all bludgeoned by noise everywhere we go? We've been pinked and labeled...isn't that enough? Do we need to be haters to one another? I have three sisters...my BC dx, has changed their lives...even when I want to tell them to take a flying leap because I disagree with their opinions, I still refuse to call them names or degrade them because it's just yucky. I want you all to keep up the debate, but lose the yuckiness...please.
-
Susan -- Not to belabour the point, but I've been reading thenewme's posts much, much longer than you have, I've had discussions with her on numerous topics, she only seeks to have any info posted here with some back-up (which is especially important re health-related topics) AND I assure you she is not a troll.
There are rules to follow on this forum. We are guests here. The Report this Post button is provided for a reason. If you don't wish to participate in this forum -- because of "tattling" -- then be my guest and post elsewhere.

Actually, it looks like Luan is following thenewme around to antagonize.
