Coffee
Hi all or anyone.....
I love coffee and have about 3 to 6 cups a day. I can change and have started changing what I eat. I believe it has a lot to do with the environment that created my breast cancer in the first place.
I have not seen anywhere it says coffee is bad. I know excess it bad but what about coffee. I can probably cut down to 2 cups, yikes but no coffee would be so hard for me to resist.
HELP.

pil - I'm a big coffee fan too. I get organic and naturally decaf now but I am still drinking 1-2 regular and about 2 decaf's a day. I haven't heard anything bad, but certainly may have missed it (or blocked it out! LOL)
-
I drink coffee. About 2 cups/day and 1 cup green tea/day. The rest of my fluid intake is water(about 60-70 ounces) I love coffee and look forward to it each morning. I think moderation is the key! I like you agree that many cancers are environmentally motivated. I've made many changes since my dagnosis~vitiamin regimen, less red meat, less sugar. I decided to keep my coffee treat! Funny tho I now use cream and agave nectar instead of cream and sugar!
-
Love my coffee with Cinnamon Vanilla Creme coffee creamer - 2 cups a day. Not going to give it up.
-
LOL re: coffee with Kahlua
Half the studies I see say it's bad for you and half say it's good for you. I say: all things in moderation!
Perhaps 3 cups a day is better than 6?

I heart coffee too but I'm cutting down to protect my bones. (Spoiler alert: I'm going to be Debbie Downer). Anyway, I'm at high risk for osteoporosis, even w/o BC. The books I read on bone health suggest a max of 2 8oz. cups of joe a day. (that's their recommended caffeine max, so if you drink green tea, that factors in as well. Decaf coffee isn't caffeine-free, it has about 50% less caffeine) You probably know, AI's have a side effect of possible bone loss. What else to feel bad about? I'm currently paranoid about the link between BC and BPA (the chemical that leaches from plastic) so I've switched my coffee-making routine so I don't use the Mr. Coffee with plastic parts (probably the easier alternative is the old-fashioned percolator, made with stainless steel). Is this enough bad news for one day? I still drink coffee, but I drink half decaf, half reg (I need to switch to the swiss-water decaf too). Oy! Too much! It's enough to make me switch to drinking the hard stuff. ha!

Hey Pil, dont want to spoil the party either
Seems like i,ve become the phytoestrogen nagger these days. If ure estrogen pos, cutting down like u say is probably a good idea. Never knew until recently, but i,m not about to give up my one and only cup of brew in am, coz that garantees a major headache, plus i love the taste.
I know, damn it..... -
Well, there is also this. Coffee on the dangerous foods list, tell me it ain't so! I wonder if you are on tamoxifen or on an AI if the effect of phytoestrogens is mitigated.

Abstract
Drinking coffee has been associated with the development of several endocrine-related cancers. The interpretation of these data has often been limited to the role that caffeine plays. Trigonelline (Trig), a niacin-related compound, is a natural constituent of coffee accounting for approximately 1% dry matter in roasted beans. Studies exploring the effects of this bioactive compound on mammalian cells are limited. The initial purpose of our studies was to determine whether Trig alters the actions of estradiol (E(2)), using proliferation of estrogen-dependent human breast cancer (MCF-7) cells as a model system. When cells were cotreated with suboptimal doses of E(2) (10 pmol/L) and Trig (100 pmol/L), an additive enhancement of MCF-7 growth was observed. In the absence of E(2), Trig stimulated MCF-7 cell proliferation in a dose-responsive manner and significantly enhanced cell growth at concentrations as low as 100 pmol/L. Cotreatment of MCF-7 cells with Trig and ICI 182,780, an estrogen receptor (ER) antagonist, inhibited Trig-induced cell proliferation. Trig treatment also induced activation of estrogen response element reporter assays in MCF-7 cells and increased expression of ER target genes (pS2, progesterone receptor, and cyclin D1) similar to E(2). While our data demonstrate that Trig activates the ER, competitive binding assays showed that Trig does not compete E(2) off of the ER at any concentration. This suggests that Trig is activating the ER through a separate mechanism. Collectively, these data demonstrate that Trig even at low concentrations stimulates MCF-7 cell growth and that this effect is mediated through ER, clearly identifying Trig as a novel phytoestrogen.

I drink two large cups in the morning and I do not plan to give it up. I have already cut down on red meat, but I can't cut out the coffee - I love the smell and the taste too much!
-
I drink 2 cups of instant sugar free Hills Bro. Cappuccino, with one tsp of straight instant added to each cup...
Not giving it up.

Thanks Omaz, what in God,s name are we to do?Phytoestrogens are everywhere like microbes !! What the h...was Mother Nature thinking ??
-
Luan, frankly I dont think Mother Nature got it wrong. I think man has it wrong.
I have to have a pep pill if I give up coffee. It just wakes me up and I love the starbucks Italian coffee. I buy 4 1pd bags and get the 5th one free. That last me about a month and a half

Abstract
OBJECTIVE:
Numerous mechanisms for the effects of coffee, tea and caffeine on the risk of breast cancer have been suggested. Caffeine intake has already been associated with high plasma levels of female hormones, but associations have not been clearly demonstrated in epidemiological studies.
DESIGN:
We examined prospectively the association of coffee, tea and caffeine consumption with breast cancer risk in a French cohort study.
SETTING:
Dietary information was obtained from a 208-item diet history questionnaire self-administered in 1993-1995. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate hazards ratios and 95 % confidence intervals.
SUBJECTS:
The study was conducted on 67 703 women with available dietary information. During a median follow-up of 11 years, 2868 breast cancer cases were diagnosed.
RESULTS:
Median intake was 280 ml/d (2·2 cups/d) for coffee and 214 ml/d (1·7 cups/d) for tea. Median caffeine intake was 164 mg/d. No association was found between consumption of coffee, tea or caffeine and breast cancer risk. Sub-analyses by tumour receptor status, menopausal status, type of coffee (regular or decaffeinated) and meals at which beverages were drunk led to the same conclusion.
CONCLUSIONS:
Results from this prospective study showed no relationship between coffee, tea or caffeine intake and breast cancer risk overall or by hormone receptor status.

Tonight I jumped on this site and immediately searched "coffee" because I want to talk about it! For you SNL fans, let's do coffee talk!!!!!
I am so glad you started this thread. I was watching Bloomberg tonight and they released a study about how at least 1 cup of coffee per day has so many antioxidants, decaf or not, and so many health benefits relative to avoiding cancer especially, as a new study reveals, for avoiding colon cancer.
Sure enough, in that same story, they reveal a recent Swedish study that advocates drinking more than 5 cups of coffee per day helps women not yet diagnosed avoid developing a certain kind of breast cancer. Here is the link for that story: http://www.thelocal.se/33714/20110511/#
I gave up coffee last year when I was diagnosed and had been drinking about 2 to 3 cups a day (black or w/cream, no sugar) and thought it best, for reasons I can't remember now (!), to give it up.
Sometimes I am so confused by all the conflicting reports. I kind of miss my morning cup but I am just never sure if it is good or not etc... I wish we had some definitive answers!
So, Pil, it seems like you are doing fine and if you wanted to cut, prevailing wisdom says don't go below 3 cups!
BTW, adorable dog!! My friend has one and I just love him!
-
How about a ratio: 2 coffees to 1 green tea. That should be healthy, no?
-
I can easily drink 6-8 cups a day and no.....I am not giving it up. I like it strong and black - the bottom of the pot is the preferred cup for me - after it has sat there for a couple of hours so it is more like syrup.
-
lizzymack thank you. HA HA love it. love my coffee except I have to find organic or raw milk for my cream. I am not going to drink anymore store bought milk. It is loaded with cancer causing drugs that help the cow to make more milk.
Jancie, your really a coffee drinker. I cant reallly drink the sludge. But some people LOVE IT! Its heck of alot better than drinking beer or wine. lol
omaz, I went to the health food store yesterday and bought me some greentea with wheatgrass. It is really tasty. I prefer it without sweetening. I drink all day long, tea, coffee, water, tea coffee. coffee, water....drink pee drink pee drink pee. LOL
-
pil - so what is the deal with wheatgrass? We picked up some at the health food store in a little pot but didn't know what to do with it once we got it home so planted it outside. What do you do with it?
-
I am not a medical professional, but the only link I have ever read about where coffee is harmful is if you have high blood pressure.
-
I'm with Jancie...unless it's the color of molasses, I'm not interested! Bring on the Diesel fuel for me!!
-
I drink coffee in the morning..........probably about 12 ounces...........I will be damned if I am going to give that up too...........I have been squeezed, poked, prodded, biopsied, had wires stuck in my boob, dye squished through my breast, till I wanted to kill the tech, cut, and have 2 scars to prove it, and now everyday for 33 days I am getting fried, and now my arm is like a swollen mess, and my ankles can't get much larger....................so......................Ithat being said, I do not intend on giving up one more stinkin thing to this friggin cancer..........end of story..................I'll drink as much coffee as I damn please..................what the hell else will cancer take away......................
-
Ducky, you said it! Well, I only know there are three things I am not giving up - margaritas, chocolate and coffee (the margaritas in moderation, of course)..
-
My DH just told me that a news clip today said that coffee decreases the risk of prostrate cancer....the one cancer that we do NOT have to worry about!
-
java java java didn't mean to make that so big
-
wheatgrass is supposed to be pulverized and drank. It full of good stuff and it is sort of sweet and I guess this is why it was in my greentea to make it a bit sweet rather a sour or tart greentea.
I just remember wheat grass was kind of sweet so I purchased the combination of greentea and wheatgrass.
-
I WANT COFFEE NOW!
Hey, I did read 3 or more cups per day can stave off dementia.....
-
Wheatgrass? That is what we get for my cat at the pet store - but it's sold as "cat grass". But if you read it or look it up on-line, it is wheatgrass, lol! Pil....are you feeling frisky lately?
-
I have decided to live on the wild side.....I am drinking my coffee and not counting how many cups!!!!!!
-
I WISH!!! lol its sweet grass. You can get a shot of this at a health food restaurant or a smoothie shot in California. These places are plentiful in ca
