Iodine During Rads?

Start Rads Monday.

I am hypothyroid (take synthroid and Armour).

Two RO's told me my thyroid will likely quit from radiation.

In the last week I've added iodized salt to my food (I've never salted my food...)...and I have a sneaking suspicion I've not had enough iodine in my diet for my entire life.

So was wondering if I take a supplement...might that protect my thyroid during Rads?  Would it interfere with treatment?

Any ideas??

I've heard a theory that a lack of iodine may be linked to hormone-related cancers. (BC, ovarian, uterine, prostate, etc). I've been using sea salt to cook, not iodized sale. Correlation? Who knows? I'm too maxed out to research this right now, but was curious if anyone else heard that correlation.

TonLee--sorry to hear you're going through this. I don't know enough to help. Does your doc who helps with the thyroid have any useful info? Any thyroid specialists, like at teaching universities?

    Peg,

I've read quite a bit about the iodine BC theory.

I will call my endo this week.  He's not an oncologist so he seems a bit out of his depth...but I'll try...good advice..thanks!

By the way, yesterday I saw there was another thread here related to women with BC +  thyroid issues.  It's under the IDC forum and called something like "Anyone else have thyroid issues as well as BC." Good luck.
