I have a question about hair loss. This may be TMI for some.

I want to know if when I loose my hair on my head will I also loose:

eyebrows

eyelashes

nose hair

arm pit hair

body hair

public hair

leg hair

I have not started my chemo yet. I am due to see the oncologist on May 9 and still have 1 more week of healing from surgery before they want to start me. I posted her because from what I understand TN have different chemo meds and they all effect differently.

Also does nail polish help your nails during chemo?

Thanks for your help in answering the questions I dont know who to ask.

Hi Candice... yes to all depending on your particular chemo.  Some people may keep eyebrows or eyelashes - but basically it all falls out.  Don't know about nail polish.

I lost all body hair as listed above - eyelashes/brows were the last to go closer to the end of chemo (dd AC+T).

Candice- I had AC and 12 weekly Taxol. On AC I lost my hairs pretty much everywhere but not eyebrows and eyelashes. On Taxol my hair started groing back halfway through but then I lost my eyebrows and eyelashes.

I used a clear nail strenghtener during my chemo. It did help my nails. I didn't loose any nails but at they end of Taxol, 3 nails were brownish.

Starbeauty- Thanks for the conformation that it is different for each chemo

Poptart- I was really wondering about the hair loss thing. Especially those non talked about areas (nose, public). By next monday I will finally know what my treatment is going to be. Waiting has been so hard.

That and they found something in my pre surgery chest xray that I had to get a CT scan today for.

    One step at a time.

I lost everything you listed.  The last to go were the eyebrows and eyelashes (this was when I converted over from AC to Taxol).  While everything is groing back slowly, I have noticed my leg hair coming back more quickly - of course Tongue out

I don't have an answer about the nails; I continued to get acrylic nails on my hands and pedicures during treatment (which I know I probably should not have, but needed something to continue to make me feel a little pampered and feminine), and did not have any problems nor did I notice that it helped except as I stated it made me feel better.

    Babs37-

Ugg, brown. I guess I should get some nice colors. I have never been big into painting my nails but I dont think I would like to look at brown nails.

    Thanks for the information.

    Tlundy.

I think that it is great that you continued to pamper yourself. Currently I dont pamper myself, Just dont have the energy, time or money to .

I am trying to make things as easy on myself as I can by preparing for it.

Sorry to hear about the leg hair. Atleast that is one thing I get to look forward too. Loosing my leg hair during the summer. Laughing  no shaving.

I was the same as poptart -

I lost all body hair as listed above - eyelashes/brows were the last to go closer to the end of chemo (dd AC+T).  At that time I also had issues with runny nose too - Taxol.

What was strange for me after completing chemo treatments is all head and eye hair returned, minimal pubic. However, no leg hair or underarm hair which I LOVE!!  No more shaving legs and they feel silky smooth with cream.  I never had any issues with my nails during chemo except maybe slower growing and really grow quick now.

Hair loss generally means all hair, head to toe.  But, sometimes they do have hair that remains in some areas or what I call stragellers and thinned out areas.  It's low maintenance :)

As for nails, I don't think that clear polish helps the nails, but keeping your nails and nail beds in good health are important, just like anything else.  I read in various different places to be cautious when having manicures and pedicures, more so because of the risk of infection with a small nick or cut.  I had a few pedicures during treatment and didn't have any troubles.

Thank you all for the information.

I am a low maintance girl normally, I have never had a mani or pedi done. I sometimes paint my own nails, not into wearing makeup. I dont even normally curl, or blow dry my hair.

Last night I had hubby help me put in ear rings because one of my holes was starting to close. I figure that I will want to were ear rings to make me feel like people are looking at my ear rings not lack of hair.

As I have not started treatment I figured that I should get it any of that type of thing done first.

I wont know the results of my CT until earliest Friday.

    HURRY UP and WAIT!! UGGGGGGG!!!

Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes...to all the above......I have to admit I was surprised (tho I shouldn't have been) when I lost the hair "down there"...I'm two years out and I'm still don't have to shave the pits or legs much.I do have lots of hair on my head and that is a good thing...my eyelashes came back so full and so many...I loved it but now I'm back to the normal not many eyelashes that I had before..dang it.

I did dd ac and taxol..my fingernails were just fine..I just lost one toenail during taxol..that was it..in fact my fingernails grew and grew...and yes I polished them

Maybe you are not a girly girl..and that is ok...I am not one either..really..but do whatever it takes to make yourself feel good about yourself..it's ok!

sorry to say dear, but i lost all my hair - everywhere.  i am nearly four years post treatment.  i have very sparse hair on my head.  no underarm or leg hair.  a bit of pubic hair.  no eyebrows at all...i think i am unusual.

i had dose dense a/c followed by taxol.

i wish you well and hope that if you lose some hair it all comes back strong, shiny and full..

I finished 6 rounds of TAC last week.  I lost 90% of head hair, still alit bit of stuble.  Still have hair on arms, eye brows and lashes.  60% of pubic hair, and have shaved stuble from legs 2 times during chemo.  I think everyone is different.  Now I am counting down to getting my hair back.

     Best of luck to you!

    Sweetie,

I lost it all.  Had to tape down my fingernails at the end so as not to lose them.  The good news is that it all comes back.  Don't think that looking good for a minute is more important than saving yourself.  And those nice people who want to paste false eyelashes on you and aren't comfortable with being seen with you as you are.  Fuck them.  They don't have a clue.

    Yellowdoglady:

I hope I dont loose my fingernails that just sounds painful.

I also hope that not all the hair comes back. It would be nice not to have to shave my legs. Smile

I have never worn false eyelashes, rarely wear any makeup at all.

The reason I asked the question was I was looking in the mirror and noticing I have a mustash and my nose hairs are getting long. And if most said I would not loose it I was going to do something about it, because it is bothering me.

Today I go see someone about a wig. I am hoping they size me and I can figure out what to do. I want atleast 1 wig so if I am having a bad day I still feel that I can go out.

From everything I have read, and my guess on treatments I will be loosing my hair about the same time my daughter graduates from Kindergarten.

I eventually lost my hair pretty much everywhere. Lashes and brows were the last to go. If you get a taxane (Taxotere, Taxol) you could lose your nails and also have neuropathy (nerve damage). I never lost my nails or had much trouble with them at all (just a few new lines in them). I credit this to putting my fingertips and toes in ice water during the infusion. I admit it was not pleasant, but IMO, it is FAR better to suffer some temporary discomfort to avoid nail problems and potentially permanent nerve damage. There is good scientific research behind this. Look up cryotherapy. Your onc may not mention it to you (it's not a medicine), but your chemo nurse should be able to set you up if you express interest. Best to you!

My hair loss started 2 weeks after 1st round of chemo taxotere and cytoxan. It fell out in huge clumps and first I cut it down to a fab new do but I am now shaving everything off and rocking the kojak! My nails are turning black on a few fingers but none of it is painful so far. 3 more rounds of chemo to go.

Take care of yourself! This too shall pass.

One nice thing is that I lost my face hair!!  I looked so much younger and prettier on chemo.  No joke.  Also, my arm hair did not come back in as much.  Very nice.

I am like Christine... I am having TX 6 tomorrow of TC and lost about 90% of head hair, but it has been growing and has grown about 3/4 inch on crown of head... temples are just stubble but I can feel it.

Never lost forearm hair or lashes (yet)... brows have thinned but are still sort of there. Thigh hair (that I don't shave) thinned about midway through chemo (betwen 3-4tx).

Everywhere else I shaved in January... and had to (wanted to) shave my calves twice... armpits haven't grown at all (yeah).

My skin has also been great... some people complain of aging on chemo... I have not experienced that.

Some vision issue (that I feel will improve when I'm done), some eye twitching that's annoying but whatever, and my nails are totally normal... not lines, no dark spots, and very strong. I have used Sally Hansen nail hardener all through and iced all nails at every infusion... I feel the icing may have helped with neuropathy as well... cheap and easy to do, so I do it.

I just finished 4 rounds of taxotere and cytoxan last week.  The hair on legs and arms kind of stopped growing within a week or two of starting chemo.  I have only shaved maybe 3 times since the beginning of March.  I started shedding down south around 13 days after my first chemo.  Hair on my head did not go because I used Penguin Cold Caps to save my hair.  In fact my hair has grown a ton during chemo...my roots are out of control (over an inch of growth since starting chemo on 3/2).  Arm hair has diminished greatly but there is still some left.  Brows started thinning about 4-5 weeks into chemo but not bad.  I just pencil in the thin areas and still have most of my brows.  Lashes are still there.....scared that will change based on other people losing them after chemo.....but for now they are long and thick as normal.  Fingernails are fine...growing in fact.

I did ice fingers and toes for 15 minutes before, during and 15 minutes after taxotere on every chemo.  I kept nails painted in my usual french manicure with salon quality nail polish.  Nails have not really changed that I can tell.  Toe nails were regular colored nail polish.  Those are fine too.  I did switch to all organic, paraben free, sulphate free, aluminum free make up so I don't know if that helped with lashes at all.  I was gentle with lashes...used Physician's Formula Organicwear Mascara because it comes off super easy - just by dabbing with water.  I used cool/cold water to remove it just to be safe.

It seems like everyone is different on the hair loss pattern.....some people lost other stuff first even on the same chemo as me.  Good luck with chemo...I just want you to know it's not that bad for everyone.  I did really well on chemo.  Exercised daily, ate normal, no nausea, etc.....  I hope you are just as lucky as I was.  Hugs!

I lost it all as hair goes. But it all grows back.  And I think if all I take away from this experience is a couple of years of bad hair, well, that is just fine.

I've had 4 treatments of Adriamycin, Cytoxan, and Taxotere with two to go (every 3 weeks.)  I shaved my head before Treatment 2 - I have kept a little stubble but can't tell if it is growing in between or not or just "stalled." My head looks more shiny so I think a lot of it is missing.  My eyebrows - which were thin to begin with - are super thin, and I'm missing at least half of my eyelashes.  On the good side, my mustache is totally gone as is the "witch hair" on my chin that I used to sport.  I have also lost it other places as well, but still have stubble on my lower legs - and I did shave legs until about Round 2.

I wash my cue ball with body wash - the oatmeal kind is especially soothing.

Candice... I also was treated with Taxotere and Cytoxan. My hair began coming out 10 days after my first chemo. That day I had my head buzzed and bought a beautiful wig, the same color red that my hair was. Then the rest of the hairs on my body began falling out... Now that it has been 3 months since my last chemo, I still am enduring some of the side effects, especially with my nails. I've always had gel overlays on my fingernails and one day when getting them done, my nail tech commented that my nails were lifting. I thought she meant the gel! Oh no, my nails underneath were lifting from the nailbed and this began well after chemo had ended. I lost one toenail, one changed color, and a couple are loose. My eyelashes and eyebrows started falling out about 6 weeks after chemo... and I thought I was in the clear! Nonetheless, like others have told you, everything should grow back. I now go wigless because it was stifling the growth of my hair at the nape of my neck and in the front. People look at me, so I look back and hold my head high... Good luck w/ everything!
