DIEP 2011

SAMayoFL -- funny you mentioned clothing pulling to one side (a couple days back). The prosthetic does NOT drape clothing the same as the real one. Normally doesn't really call much attention to itself but I have been wearing the "Fashion Targets Breast Cancer" shirts lately (http://is.gd/eXs9TD ) and the target is all off centre!! Irony.
-
@IowaSue44 That's super news! Onward and upward ~ when will you be DIEPing?
-
Hi Ladies: I got my surgery date today. It will be on July 8th at 8:30 am. I am excited and nervous at the same time. I had orginally planned on having a prophylatic mast. on my left breast ,but after talking to my oncologist I decided to have a uni DIEP . I already had my ct scan, and he said it looked great. I also took him a disk. One of his patients sent pictures of her DIEP to me, and was willing to meet with me to show me his work. I am glad it will be happening the week of the 4th. Maybe he will be off early in the week and well rested.
-
My DIEP is May 17th, refresh my memory, what should or shouldn't I be doing to prepare for surgery? I'm sure no aspirin , no pain reliever except tylenol. My consultation was way back in Jan. and I was just a month out from chemo. Don't remember what all PS told me. Maybe I should call there and have them refresh my memory. Less than 2 weeks now!
-
IowaSue...on my sheet for pre op...take multivitamins(w/ c & iron) twice daily ,avoid meds that increase bleeding tendency (long list, in general avoid aspirin containing compounds, ibuprofen and herbal meds at least 3 wks b4) , Limit vitiamin E intake & herbal medications (E in multivitiamin is ok)...also pre op testing (then fax it to them) Oh and stop smoking if you do smoke...they emailed me this packet that is 11 pages long and has all this info with the medication to avoid list...I will still be in town on 17th...I have my chk up on the 18th,so if I'm allowed I'll come say Hi !! Good Luck and see you in Nawlins
-
Hoo Rah Sue!
Things I brought that worked for me:
Comfy yoga pants(wore them to and from hospital)
Slip on shoes
Button down shirt to leave hospital in
2 men's wife beaters to pin drains to when leaving the hospital (they really worked great cause I could pin the drains anywhere that was comfortable and move them around)
Refillable water bottle (kept it right in bed with me)
iPhone, iPad with books on tape, movies and music and comfy headphones ( I didn't watch any tv and hospital had wifi so I could email and surf the web. I found texting with friends and relatives better than talking on the phone.)
Low rise underwear and you don't need a bra
Chapstick, throat lozenges, hand lotion.
A hair dryer (no hair dryer at the hospital and I have long hair which I can't tolerate wet when I'm in bed. I made my DH go buy one and he dried my hair)
A couple of small squishy pillows for under the seatbelt straps in the car when we left.
Hope everything goes well for you. Good Luck! -
Snobird You said low rise underwear..just wondering I had 3 c sections ,do you think they would use that area for incision? Because I was thinking of getting maternity undies, so nothing would rub incision site
-
I was thinking of maternity undies and pants, as well. If we have low rise panties won't our bare tummies be exposed to the rougher fabric of our pants? Or will we be heavily bandaged?
I did buy some men's XL "sleep pants" in Target, that have a drawstring. They were cheap and lightweight knit. I figure I can wear them around the house. They are plain black so I could probably get away with wearing them out too. Will raising the arms to put on shirts (like a wife beater) be a problem? Or should I search for button down or zip shirts?
I guess if we over prepare we could end up with a lot of stuff we have no use for but I live in the country and the nearest store is at least 20 minutes away.
-
No one likes to discuss the dreaded smoking topic...but I'm just curious if anyone who has had or will be having DIEP was or is a smoker.
I smoked for 20 years, I know...SO bad...sniff
but I quit in preparation for this surgery. just curious.
Also where do you get a raised toilet seat and do you think it's a must have for after surgery?
-
I had low rise undies and fold over yoga pants so there was no rubbing of anything on the ab incisions. Worked for me as I didn't want anything gripping me above the incision line. The yoga pants were stretchy, thick cotton knit with flared bottoms in black and I could wear them like dress pants. The wife beat T - shirt had large armholes I had a size Large, no problem getting it over my head and arms at all. I thought I would throw them away when I was done except now I use them for night shirts. Keeps me cool during hot flashes and night sweats of menopause. I had large diaper safety pins to pin my drains to the T-shirt up high under my new Foobs to keep the tubing from dropping into the toilet. I wore my husbands button down shirts loose over my pants so the only fabric against my incisions was the T- shirt.

Wow... I haven't been on here in a week and boy was I behind time. I too had delayed uni-DIEP and am 7 weeks out from DIEP surgery. I went a year with only one boob as well and understand all the problems with clothes and prot boob. I hated it and was always uncomfortable & miserable so surgery couldn't have happened fast enough for me. I too was badly burned during radiation which ended October 1, 2010. I went back to work full time this week and last weekend which was at 6 1/2 weeks I went to Seaworld with my stepson & my DH for a school field trip. Since we haven't been able to go anywhere for the last year & half we decided to make a weekend of it. Its a 3 hour trip so we went down the night before and met the class at Seaworld and stayed til Sunday then came home. The next day we went to Epcot as well. I have to say I was worried about how I would do but it was fine. Seaworld was great and all the walking I think actually did me good. Of course roller coasters were off limits!! The second day at Epot was not too bad I was a little sore from the day before but it didn't take long to go through Epcot and we hit the Jazzuci back at the hotel when we got back and that felt wonderful. Life really does start getting back to normal after all!!! I was beginning to wonder. lol I have my appointment to discuss Stage II on June 7th so if anyone has tips for Stage II I would love to hear them. I am back to walking 2 miles a day before I go in to work and I hope to start back some yoga on my Wii fit in the next couple of days, I have just been to busy to start. Good Luck to all you ladies that have surgeries coming up, if I can answer any questions feel free to ask.

ladym: No raised toilet seat needed, but I had only one side done. I did need some help getting up the first day or two, so I can see where it might be useful.
I needed very little at the hospital; they supplied almost everything except a hair dryer; I was really glad to have my little notebook computer. After getting out of the hospital, I wanted the compression undies within a day or two and the undershirts work great -- I got great stretchy ones in the womens dept. at Target. I also wanted the shelf camis and the XL zip front hoodie with the inside pockets; my husband and I made a store run for the hoodie. I used the cart to lean on and had to take rest breaks; I'm sure I looked crazy all bent over, but I didn't care.
I asked most everyone to give me space except for my closest friends; I wanted to sleep & rest as much as possible.I sent out group email updates; that keep the incoming calls to a minimum.
Marciroberts: You are little ahead of me - do you feel like your tummy scar is stuck? I tried massage a couple of weeks ago, but it looked like it was irritating the scar, so waited and now I wonder if I have scar tissue adhering the scar to the underneath tissue. It is only 'stuck' in the middle. I think I also have some scar tissue holding the underneath part of my breast incision - it pulls when I move my arm. I see my PT tomorrow.
I would love a vacation but I would have to wait until I could roller coaster. I'm waiting for my stage 2 surgery date; PS says likely July. I started gentle yoga last week, I'm very tentative and whenever it feels like its pulling too much, I ease off. I feel like I have more range of motion every day. I feel very normal except for the tight places at the two incisions. Good on you for walking daily before work! I've got to get back on a regular schedule at my Y; it is a 4 minute walk from my house, so no good excuse not to and lots of yoga classes.
-
alexanjb: Either low rise or high rise brief would work as long as the waistband doesn't land on your incision. No bandages just steri- strips on my incisions and I could shower right away but that varies depending on your PS.
-
treesprite: The only place my tummy scar feels like that is at my hip bone area. I have been massaging mine with Palmers Cocoa Butter & Vitamin E Massage Creme. That's what the PT used and recommended during physical therapy after my MX. It really softens the scar and its a healing creme so I started using it a couple weeks out. My range of motion is improving daily too, I was afraid I was going to have to go back to PT but everything seems to be loosing up. Now if I could just get this 25 lbs off that I gained during Chemo & Rads I would be wonderful.
-
I've been massaging with vit E; I'll see what my PT says tomorrow - I hope I'm not too late!
I want to lose about 20 lbs. before stage two; not eating after 7 pm has taken off about 5 pounds. My PS doesn't have an open date until aug 17, argh, but they think they'll have a cancellation, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed; I have a consult in mid-June.

Ladies when does the wearing of the binder come into play?
-
I didn't wear underwear under my yoga pants for the first week, I just had the binder on over my abdomen, pinned the drains to it and wore yoga pants and a long shirt. with a sports bra underneath. I grossed out my neighbor by going outside with my drains hanging, so I put them in a small drawstring VELVET purse. Yes, velvet. It was what was on hand. I called it my "Goth Colostomy Bag". I actually wore the binder until I went to my 4 week appointment. The pressure of the upper fat on my flatlower part was a bit uncomfortable. My Dr. took it off of me at the appointment and threw it in the trash.
It is amazing how fast the healing goes. I am just over 5 weeks out and I can do pretty much anything I could do before. There is a bit of tightness in my abdomen, but it is mostly just the skin stretching. My arms aren't limited at all and I was carrying large stepping stones 2 days ago as I decided to do some landscaping. This weekend, I'm going to build a gate for my yard. I went to a club and saw a band last week and I went to Disneyland the other day (I have an annual pass, so it's not relly a huge deal).
I'm now back at work dog walking, I've got 3 orphaned kittens in my care and I'm preparing for 3 upcoming craft shows. I actually wish I had more time off!!! I started a summer quilt for my bed and want to make more progress on it!
I'm thinking I'll need a week after Stage 2 and I'll at least get the quilt top done. The pain I was in seems like it was years ago, not weeks. I don't even feel badly bruised any more. I actually feel 98% normal.
So, enjoy your rest time, ladies because it is over WAY too soon! I wish I had another 6 weeks to concentrate on the stuff I always wish I had more time to do!
-
Should we buy binders so we have them post op? Or is this something the doctor will tell us about? Are they typically covered by insurance? Is there a difference between the binder and a compression garment? Are they made like the compression sleeves (for lymphadema) ? Did some of you use spandex biker shorts instead of the binder or after the binder or what? I looked on the web site that was mentioned in previous posts but I wouldn't know what I should get. The reviews didn't seem too hot on the binder but I don't know where else they could be found.
I like the idea of using a hoodie as a "bed jacket" and to pin the drains to, but I have been so hot since my mx. I don't know what is up with that. Is it chemo still in my body do you think? I am hot and perspiring when the thermostat is set on 62F and poor DH is huddled with a blanket! I went through menopause long before diagnosis and I never had hot flashes, so that is not it.
By the way, Bed, Bath, and Beyond does have the pillow wedges.
-
alexanjb:Call your PS's office and ask if they send you home in a binder and if not, what they prefer. My PS didn't put me in a binder; seems like the binder is more convenient as it sounds like it wraps around and fastens in the front, so no up and down when you have to go to the bathroom & easy on & off.
I slept in the big stretchy sleeveless undershirts & used the hoodie when going out or when people came over (although I limited visitors that first week). It was rainy & cold here, so I sometimes I put a BIG sweater over the undershirts to sleep/nap.
I had my first session scar therapy today with my PT; I don't know that it is necessary, but it feels so good! She recommended the Palmers Cocoa butter with vit E, as someone else said and showed me how to gently massage back & forth across my scars to loosen & to help the scar recede (my tummy scar is still raised a bit in the middle). She recommended easing slowly back into treadmill/elliptical, starting with whimpy and adding a little more intensity each day, so 25 min. whimpy and adding 5 minutes of more intensity. I'm not sure I can be that patient or even why its necessary . . I'll ask her next week.
-
Hi everyone, because I read so much here about the compression garments, i asked my PS before surgery about special garments or clothing for afterwards and he said no special anything, he did not want anything on me except loose fitting clothing, didnt even get the ok for a soft bra until 4 weeks out. So I would check with PS, they are all different.
Notafraid I am so amazed at your strength. I am 61/2 weeks out and doing all that I used to also, but find that I get tired easily. Walked a good 3 mile walk the other day, trying to build back up. I notice that my bones are hurting me a lot! Dont know if its my arthritis, since we have had nothing but rain and cold for 19 days straight, or its just worse from being unable to move around and work as usual.
Treesprite I also use the palmers cocoa butter and massage all my scars after showering, sont know if it helps, but sure feels good. My incisions are looking very good.
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO ALL!
-
Hi Ladies! I got a call yesterday and my surgery date has been moved up to May 20th. Someone else wanted a later date. I am going out today to pick up things for my journey. I thought I would have until July 8th to shop, but I am happy to be moved up . Thank all of you for your input and sharing your experiences. Happy DIEP to all that is about to start.
-
@MSCal02 That's pretty exciting that your surgery is moved up. You certainly have less time to be nervous about it. My surgery is one month away and I can't stop trying to find information. I keep wondering what it is going to be like during and after. I wonder how my tummy will end up. The tummy tuck is not the purpose of the whole thing but do you think it will be an added benefit?
Has anyone heard from Charlottesmama? She was scheduled for her DIEP on 5/3. She may be just going home from the hospital.
-
Happy Mother's Day everyone! alexanjb: I just wish that I could stand on a conveyor belt that rotates and say just zap the fat from every where.I hope to have success in that department. I have heard some say that their stomachs are still big. I am hoping for smaller everything except breasts since I have to go through this. I was hoping to lose a little more weight, but I will just be glad to get this behind me.I went shopping last night and picked up low cut briefs, yoga pants, mens' tank tees and a hoodie in case it is cold in the hospital room. I will be in the hospital for 4 days if all goes well.
-
Happy mothers day to all of you lovely Moms out there..I'm looking forward to spending this beautiful day with my two daughters.
mscal02- Good Luck!!! I'll be thinking about you. Please post so we can see how you are recovering
I'm on the coutdown now 5 weeks and 2 days to go ...woot!!
-
Wishing everyone a great Mother's Day, whatever your plans!
Kathy
-
Thanks ladym13: I will keep you all in the loop. I am planning a girls day out back yard party this Saturday if it doesn't rain and we don't get flooded out here. If anyone lives in Memphis, TN, please come by. We will have food fun and games, facials and just enjoy the day.
-
Happy Mother's Day to all! I just got home from going to a stage performance of "Beauty and the Beast" with my Mom and my Sister. We went to the Spaghetti Warehouse after that.
I am exactly one month away from my surgery, and I have started a list from things you girls have suggested. The rotating conveyor belt to zap fat sounds great.
-
Sign me up for the conveyor belt! ~ Daiva
-
mscal02 the 20th is coming up fast..Good luck to you! You will be pleasantly surprised at how well you do. Will be sending big vibes and energy your way on the 20th
-
How long did most of you need or anticipate needing someone with you after coming home from the hospital? My husband works nights and is not a nurturer by any stretch of the imagination. My daughter and sister are volunteering to coordinate with each other and be with me and my elderly parents live next door, so I am lucky. My surgery is Wednesday, Jun 8 and my daughter said she is taking vacation Wednesday to Wednesday. Shouldn't that be more than enough? I thought after she returns to work, my sister could spend a couple of daytime hours with me.
