Mom just diagnosed with recurrence

My mom was just diagnosed with recurrent breast cancer after 10 years of remission.  I don't know all the details yet but we do know she is no longer going to be taking her Famara and has $1180 dollars worth of it now that she can't use which is just making her sick.  Is there anyway of selling it (that sounds so illegal which I hate but if she could recover any of the money and let someone get it a little cheaper than usual that seems so much better than just throwing it away) or even donating it and able to use it as a deduction or something??  Does anyone know if there are any programs or anything??  Thanks

Unfortunately, there is no legal way to sell the medication.  I have worked with charitable clinics that took unused medications, but I do not believe you can take those as a tax deduction.  I am sorry to hear of your mother's recurrence.  I wish you both the best.

wbts, maybe you could repost your question about Femara saying something about your Mom having to go off it and having a few months (or whatever amount she has) extra that she won't be using, and for anyone who might be interested to PM you.  Use Femara in the title.  Then you can discuss shipping arrangements, etc. privately.  Just an idea...

Another thought... If any of it is sealed, would the pharmacy possibly allow you to return it?  Very likely they won't, but it might be worth at least asking in view of her situation...   Deanna

my mom when she died on April 12 also left a lot of her precious cheo drugs: Bondronat tablets, Xeloda, and Femara.  We plan to donate them to whoever needs them most here in the Philippines

good idea dlb...that was what I was going to suggest. I can understand why drugs cant be returned. Sorry about your mom. Yikes 10 years in remission. When my mom was diagnosed back in the late 80s she was told there was a 7 year window...You and your family are in our prayers. Please keep us posted how all of you are doing. Diane

I just returned a bunch of meds from my original diagnosis 9 years ago!!! Not sure why I had them tucked away...but anyway I returned them to my pharmacy.  I knew that they would take them and had been meaning to do it for so long; but after moving and tucking them away I kept forgetting.  I am not sure what they do with them. They were so old they probably destroyed them. But I am quite certain that they do something with drugs returned that are more current and useable; like to those who are unable to afford them.  I am in Canada too; New Brunswick. So sorry to hear about your mom...but they have come such a long way in just 9 years.  I have also been diagnosed with a local recurrence in Jan 2011, at 48 yrs old, after 9 years.  Is your mom a member on this site? If so I would be very willing for her or you to email me if she would like; I know for some women it is nice to have someone to talk to who is going through a similar situation. In 2001 I met an amazing woman while have our first treatment. We continued our treatments together and had each other to lean on for the 6 months; and have remained great friends since. My thoughts and prayers are with her and her family.Valerie
